When do you put your central heating on?

If you have it that is. I'm curious whether people wait for a certain date or just see how cold it gets?

It was 5 degrees here yesterday - and we lit a fire, but didn't put central heating on. I don't think it's been on since March.

Thermostat set to 18.
When cold, I light the multi fuel heats whole house.
As a child and in student digs recall ice on inside of windows. Just layer up!

LaurieFairyCake · 30/09/2021 19:48

We don't have a thermostat- I just put it on when I need it

I've stuck it on now (London) as I'm cold

RampantIvy · 30/09/2021 19:52

We have a thermostat in our living room, so the heating goes on and off according to the temperature and not the calendar.

Having been a martyr to the cold when younger I am not prepared to do that any more.
a) We can afford it
b) We offset the environmental impact with our solar panels

DukeofEarlGrey · 30/09/2021 19:54

I put it on today. I wanted to at least wait til tomorrow when it would officially be October, but then I realised it's damn cold here and there's no need to suffer!

Joystir59 · 30/09/2021 19:54

Today

meow1989 · 30/09/2021 19:55

In our old house we had heating set to come on at 16, our new house I've turned it off but did feel a bit chilly today so might turn it on if that gets more so. I like a cold room at night so never have it on at night.

Mantlemoose · 30/09/2021 19:56

Brrr today!!

Kezzie200 · 30/09/2021 19:58

We try to make November, which encourages us to put a jumper on at 6 or go to bed if it's cold at 9.

However, if its gets silly, we give in earlier. It really depends on the year to be honest.

We almost put the Woodburn on today. Not for heat, just because the rain made it so miserable.

likeacandleinthewind · 30/09/2021 19:59

I first switched it on for an hour on 11/9 as I woke up cold in the night.

I've got hive so super controllable, the thermostat kicks in at 18 degrees whatever the date on the calendar.

DuesToTheDirt · 30/09/2021 20:00

When it's less than 15 outside during the day, I find it too cold if I'm sitting around in the house. Heating went on this week.

immersivereader · 30/09/2021 20:00

Went on Tuesday evening for an hour.

Stuffin · 30/09/2021 20:01

Mine is turned 'on' all the time but cuts in when it drops below a certain temperature. Therefore it comes on when it's cold and not at any arbitrary date.

It kicked in a couple of days ago as it was around 18.5 degrees. I also put the wood burner on today to heat up the room I was working in.

I hate being cold having been a child in a house with no central heating scraping the ice of the inside of a window.

myadhdusername · 30/09/2021 20:03

Honestly as soon as I feel the slightest bit chilly in the house. Whatever month it is! June, July or August.

This might change if these energy prices keep going up!

bengalcat · 30/09/2021 20:14

I’ve put it on the last couple nights after arriving home for @ 1 1/2hrs London

Chicchicchicchiclana · 30/09/2021 20:15

I don't have a set date. It's been on for a few hours the last couple of days (London).

Thighdentitycrisis · 30/09/2021 20:19

Not yet!
Trying to keep costs down

Today was the first since last winter I had to put on extra layers for wfh sitting at the desk all day- it’s going to drive me back to the office

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 30/09/2021 20:20

Today is the first day

beentoldcomputersaysno · 30/09/2021 20:21

Succumbed last night!

Floralnomad · 30/09/2021 20:23

Ours is set at 17 and is yet to come on on it’s own and I’ve not yet felt the need to put it on . I have started putting the dogs blanket over him at night in bed the last 2 nights so it’s definitely getting cooler . I can’t remember the last time that I have got to October without putting the heating on .

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 30/09/2021 20:43

My thermostat is set to 20 and it clicked on for the first time today. We have a separate thermostat in the bedroom that I set really low so it basically never comes on, I like the bedroom to be cold!

Livpool · 30/09/2021 20:46

When it is cold enough. Last year when wfh I didn't have it on much during the day when I was home alone. But if it was cold when DS was home then it goes on.

thecatsthecats · 30/09/2021 20:51

Had our first thermostat argument today.

He likes a fucking inferno, I like to just take the chill off.

TheBestSpoon · 30/09/2021 21:08

Usually have the thermostat set to 18 and go with that, although we often turn it up to 19 or 20 when really cold outside or we're WFH. It's not yet kicked in automatically this year.

Saying that, toddler DS has the coldest room in the house and it was only 16 in there when I put him to bed this evening, so I've popped it on for an hour just to take the chill off even though it was a balmy 18.5 in the hall where the thermostat is... That's the first time this year though.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 30/09/2021 21:11

We do it when we feel it’s cold and uncomfortable enough in the house to need it. No ‘rules’ about what date.

We’ve switched ours on yesterday. It’ll likely stay on now til May.

likeacandleinthewind · 30/09/2021 21:12

I also got my little oil filled radiator out today - forgot that earlier. I tend to start off heating my home office during the day rather than the whole house until it gets really cold.
