When do you put your central heating on?

If you have it that is. I'm curious whether people wait for a certain date or just see how cold it gets?

It was 5 degrees here yesterday - and we lit a fire, but didn't put central heating on. I don't think it's been on since March.

When it's needed.

delilahbucket · 30/09/2021 13:57

When it's cold as it is on a thermostat. Tuesday was the first time it had come on since about April.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 30/09/2021 14:01

When I'm cold

KurtWilde · 30/09/2021 14:06

I put mine on when it's needed, I don't really go by what month it is. I had it on and off over 'summer' too because it was just so damp and horrible the house never dried out.

SirenSays · 30/09/2021 14:09

Mine have already been on a few times this year, I might have gone without but its so bloody damp I don't have much choice. Thanks for the reminder to bleed my radiators.

Ariela · 30/09/2021 14:12

Christmas? We're the 'put on a jumper' outdoorsy type, so don't feel the cold. No heating and short sleeves still today. But I did muck out horses earlier!

GoodnightGrandma · 30/09/2021 14:13

Never normally before October , but I have to admit that I gave in last night and put it on 🥴

Fink · 30/09/2021 14:23

I live with elderly relatives and they want it on as soon as it gets a bit chilly. They're away for a bit at the moment so I haven't had it on, but I know as soon as they come back it'll be on. In the meantime, I'm wfh with a hot water bottle, fingerless gloves, thick bedsocks (on top of normal socks) and a hoodie and gilet, and plenty of hot drinks.

Bluntness100 · 30/09/2021 14:25

I never understand these threads, I put it on when it feels chilly.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 30/09/2021 14:30

I try and hold out till November but sometimes don't if it's really cold.

thewinehasgonetomyhead · 30/09/2021 14:34

@teaandpastries

Surprised no one has mentioned that massively rising energy costs. This is definitely going to affect when we switch on and how high or low the thermostat goes
Agree. I probably would have put ours on my now usually but the price increase has made me rethink. I will try and hold out as long as possible.
daytripper28 · 30/09/2021 14:34

@Bluntness100. There’s not a lot to understand 😂.

That’s why it’s in ‘chat’ section. I started the thread through idle curiosity as to what other people do…

Ours is never switched off. It's set to timed, 18.5c on hall thermostat. It hasn't kicked in yet. I do normally give it a test run as it starts to cool off, just to make sure there are no obvious problems (we didn't used to and then found our heating wasn't working and couldn't be repaired mid October), so I like to know if there could be a problem earlier now.

doadeer · 30/09/2021 14:37

I hate a cold house. I often put on for 30 mins I have a cosy apartment so it gets warm quickly. Doesn't matter what time of year it is

RumHoney · 30/09/2021 14:42

I am in the thermostat camp. The thermostat is set fairly low but has still kicked in over the last couple of days.

TuftyMarmoset · 30/09/2021 14:52

Me too, windows open here and last night I was in short pyjamas and kicked the duvet off! If I didn’t have DP I probably wouldn’t use the heating at all
KingsleyShacklebolt · 30/09/2021 14:54

We don't put it on and off.

The thermostat is set to 20c during the day.

If the temperature in the house drops below 20c the heating comes on, whether it's June or January. I do not get the logic of rationing heating depending on the date on the calendar. If it's cold, it's cold. Whatever the date is.

CraftyGin · 30/09/2021 14:55

I keep mine on year-round and let the thermostat do its business.

Rainallnight · 30/09/2021 14:56

Yesterday.

Megan2018 · 30/09/2021 14:57

Ours kicks in automatically at 19 degrees, it’s underfloor heating so takes a while to get going but then maintains a steady state using the cheap electricity at night mostly.
It kicked in this week for the first time since Spring.
We might light the fire tonight though. Can’t wait!

garlicandsapphires · 30/09/2021 15:01

Our thermostat is set to 16 I think in the day and 19 for a few hours in the evening. We use the wood burner a lot. I’m quite mean when it comes to using energy and I also like a cold house but have a small warm bathroom and office.

Cocomumma · 30/09/2021 15:02

Yesterday @4.47 Grin but i like the heat so if i feel a chill i put it on, I've never understood people who sit it coats and freeze if there is central heating available.

MrsBerthaRochester · 30/09/2021 15:15

Our boiler only seems to work when it wants to. Couple that with a house with rotting windows and it's cold here year round! We have gotten used to it so as soon as home, onesies, jumpers etc go on and my sofas are covered in cosy throws.

JaninaDuszejko · 30/09/2021 16:22

Daft question really, it needs more context. BBC weather tells me it will be 18C with windspeeds of 15mph in London tomorrow but 11C with windspeeds up to 58mph in Shetland. If you live in a tiny modern well insulated flat in London you are very unlikely to need your heating on tomorrow, if you are in an old exposed farmhouse on Yell then you'll be hunkering down.

I suspect most people will have a thermostat so the heating comes on when it's cold in your house (which will vary with location, insulation, and type of house) and it depends how active you are, we find we need the heating on higher in working hours than in the evening because DH and I get cold sitting in front of the computer but once we are moving around doing housework we generate our own heat much more.

Tumbleweed101 · 30/09/2021 16:32

I pop it on today to warm through as I was cold in a jumper. Generally once it gets properly cold I have the thermostat at 15C overnight as I get too hot otherwise and 20 during the day so it kicks on and off to keep it around that. I do turn it to 15C when everyone is out during the day.

I have found that over 20C and oil consumption really increases.
