When do you put your central heating on?

If you have it that is. I'm curious whether people wait for a certain date or just see how cold it gets?

It was 5 degrees here yesterday - and we lit a fire, but didn't put central heating on. I don't think it's been on since March.

Started to put it on middle of this month.

Crunchymum · 30/09/2021 21:15

My mum would never have it in before October, but I have had it on yesterday (30 minutes before bed) and this morning (30 minutes before the kids got up.

I've dug out all the warmer bedding and dressing gowns so hopefully we can hold out a bit longer.

I'm still working from home and I have a portable radiator, so I can easily keep one room warm as it gets colder.

Ariela · 30/09/2021 21:22

Our thermostat is set about 16 but we have a naturally warm house. So it might genuinely not go on till Christmas, depending on the weather.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/09/2021 21:25

@Aposterhasnoname

We just leave it set at 18 degrees when we’re up, and 12 after we’ve gone to bed. If 17 degrees is too cold in November, then it’s too cold in July.
17 degrees in November isn't the same as 17 degrees in July though. On the other hand, I agree, if it's cold I want heating. When I put mine on a few days ago I discovered it had been switched off for the whole building over the summer, but if I'd been cold I would have put my electric heater on. Heating on properly for the first time tonight. I hope those doing November to March live alone as it's nasty to do that to other people.

@Bluntness100

I never understand these threads, I put it on when it feels chilly.

It goes on when it's cold enough and this year that was a few days ago. It's on a thermostat though so only on when the internal temp drops enough.

Lanique · 30/09/2021 21:44

November to March usually. We have an Aga though which keeps the middle of the house warm all the time though.

CeibaTree · 30/09/2021 21:44

Just put it on this evening as my 4 year old complained he was cold even though he was wearing a jumper, house is so toasty now!

Bobsyer · 30/09/2021 21:46

When it’s cold. But I am the sort who won’t put it on if I’ve been sitting about all day and am cold - I need to either exert myself or get into bed for a bit and that will warm me up.

I am worried for this coming winter.

FWBNC · 30/09/2021 21:51

@Cocomumma

Yesterday *@4*.47 Grin but i like the heat so if i feel a chill i put it on, I've never understood people who sit it coats and freeze if there is central heating available.
Then count yourself lucky. A lot of people don't have the luxury of putting the CH on whenever they're a bit chilly!

I'm fortunate that I can put the heating on if I'm a bit chilly, but I really feel for the people who cannot. Who can't afford it or who don't have CH, efficient heating systems

I haven't had mine on yet (bar a test run). My annual grouch with it, is that I'd like it to be a bit warmer when I get up (5:30/6) but I hate HATE waking up too hot. I need instant heat at the click of my fingers! Until it gets predictably cold in the evenings I'll just put it on manually if/when I'm cold. Once it's colder I'll put it on the timer & the thermostat. I don't know why, but me/this house have a thermostat temperature and a 'feels like' temperature, so it's not an exact science.

OakPine · 30/09/2021 22:00

I'd love to say "Christmas" but up here at 55N it's already pretty cold in this (rented) Victorian house with single glazed windows and a bit gap under the front door.
I'm sitting here wearing 2 jumpers/thermal socks etc, and I'm shivering.
Christmas seems unlikely.

reluctantbrit · 30/09/2021 22:01

I hate dressing up warm or wrapping myself in blankets so I put the heating on when I am cold.

The last couple of days I had it on just a bit to get the chill out in the morning but today it was on the whole day. It's set to a max degree, so when that is reached it will stop.

We have a fire in the living room so we put that on when we are in the room for longer but during the day I want it warm where I work and the room can be easily cold.

I review the temperature tomorrow but in general we have it on by mid-October.

plinkplinkfizzer · 01/10/2021 00:03

I have not had to switch it in this Autumn yet . This is a fairly new new house with good insulation in the central belt . Normally nearer November it would go on . There is usually a first frost before we need it .

PickAChew · 01/10/2021 00:08

When it turns on because of the thermostat. Happened a few times over the summer.

We don't have a fire to light.

AnnieSnap · 01/10/2021 00:15

When I feel that the air in the house is cold. I’m happy not to if a hoodie/cardigan and a throw whilst sitting down means I feel warm, but I have asthma, so I don’t hesitate if the air in the room feels chilly. I put it on today for that reason.

RavingAnnie · 01/10/2021 00:22

Mines been on for a couple of days.

chinashopbull · 01/10/2021 00:27

When I feel too cold to go to the toilet in the middle of the night is when I start putting the heating on. It tends to be late October.

Walnetcream · 01/10/2021 05:49

Scottish highlands are not very cold yet. We are happy to wear lots of layers and save a bit of electric while we can. Although we now have loft\ wall insulation, double glazing and we put up door curtains in the autumn (which really helps keep in heat) We don't get as cold as we used too and we keep the heat we have. When it's properly cold in winter we tend to make one room warm and cosy and have blankets to wrap up in too. But there are no vulnerable people here that need to be warm. I do have an arthritic cat who loves the heat. We put a plug in heater on for him, near his bed if he looks uncomfortable.

DinosApple · 01/10/2021 05:57

Won't go on until absolutely necessary. We all wear Oodie type things and have fleecy bedding and thermals, so them first.
(Large house, expensive bills, small income.)
At the moment I'm keeping warm by having a permanent temperature Hmm.

Wabola · 01/10/2021 06:24

It went on earlier in the week, before then it was constantly over 20c in the house, I have it on in the morning and evening at the moment as it is ok in the daytime as I am often busy doing stuff or out and about

hollyhocksarenotmessy · 01/10/2021 07:06

I cracked about 8.30pm and put it on low until I went to bed, as I had freezing hands, feet and face. I was wearing a jumper and wooly socks. Our house is an old end terrace, single glazed and drafty. I'm going to tackle the door drafts before it gets really cold this year.

I prefer a cool home though, I feel stifled in hot houses.

Ivy48 · 01/10/2021 07:13

It’s been on already this week. No good for a terraced house to be cold and damp so whacked it on for a few hours. No set date of
We’re in socks and dressing gowns and still freezing it goes on

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 01/10/2021 07:20

Never by the date, it comes on when the house falls below a certain temperature so has been on a few times this month already.
I hate being cold, don’t mind a blanket for watching a movie but I prefer to be warm without layers.

Metropolismoon · 01/10/2021 07:34

I’ve ordered a dehumidifier. Damp air feels cooler. I’m hoping that if I can manage the humidity I can delay using the heating for longer. It’s low energy and economical.
I also have a very warm dressing gown.

RedToothBrush · 01/10/2021 07:37

I don't like having it on before November or after March.

We have it on a thermastat and managed November last year, but it was a cold spring and we still had days until May where it really was that cold in the house.

Dh is worse than me with it too. We have heating on low when we do have it on.

Our gas, water and electric bills are really low. Thankfully.
