Does a school shirt really need ironing?

Surely not.

I had this conversation with DS.

Me: look, if you want your shirts ironing, you need to do it ok.
DS: Ok, I don't think they need doing.
Me: no, it's hardly creased at all. (It's non iron but we all know that's a bit of an oxymoron)
The End - mother son like minded bonding session done.

30 mins later.

DP: I'm going to iron his shirts.
Me: why, they don't need it and I told him he needs to do it. That's some shirt ironing you are signing up for. Two DC, years of school, shirt a day = one million shirts.
DP: (disappointed but not surprised look) they do need ironing. I am doing it.

Context: they wear a blazer which he has so far not taken off. Whilst I would agree if he was just wearing a shirt, it would need ironing. However if you lined up two boys in blazers one ironed shirt and one not, there is no flipping way you could pick out which was which.

I've just ironed school shirts. Bloody hell its seems like several other kids have moved in and put their shirts in the wash - the pile is never ending!Confused....but despite being all kinds of lazy in other ways I still feel I have to do it.

I feel like the other mothers will judge me for the kids having non ironed shirts

I don't iron anything else ever

househuntinginthesouth · 12/09/2021 23:02

I never used to, if it's hung up nicely after washing it looks fine plus it's hidden by a blazer what's the point....would've been my answer til last week when I did iron one and realised what a huge difference there is. So my answer is no they don't need ironing if it's mostly covered but what little you can see does look nicer/smarter when ironed

I don't iron shirts.
I do iron crushed school trousers though, but it only takes 30 seconds.

School shirts can be ironed? Well feck I learn something new everyday.

If DH wants to iron shirts let him, no doubt much cheaper than therapy.

RedSoloCup · 12/09/2021 23:03

I have three kids 10, 15, 16, never ironed a shirt (actually maybe once when no.1 started reception, soon got bored) 😂😁

Anordinarymum · 12/09/2021 23:06

Those school shirts can be washed and hung on a hanger to dry and they are perfectly fine. This is coming from an habitual ironer !

However... once you iron the shirt it never quite dried the same as before. Don't iron anything unless it is creased is my motto and I still have a pile waiting

milveycrohn · 12/09/2021 23:10

I had 3 DS, so was certainly not ironing shirts past primary school, and yes, they did wear shirts at primary level as well.
So, from the age of 11 (secondary) they ironed their own shirts. One DS just ironed the bit at the front that can be seen under the V-neck jumper!.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 12/09/2021 23:46

I don't iron them, and neither do my teenagers. They are usually under a jumper anyway. I don't iron anything, life is too short.

beautifullymad · 13/09/2021 00:15

Wash them, flap them, hang to dry on a hanger. Wear them.

No ironing.

If yours are creased after doing the above them buy ones with a slightly higher polyester blend next time.

Can tell from a mile off people who don't iron their clothes.

You need a more exciting hobby love.Grin

Yes they need ironing.
Nah they don't. You just choose to
OurChristmasMiracle · 13/09/2021 07:40

I always believed the rules were ironed for the first week of term, last day of the year and school photo days

DP has standards. You and your son are slovenly. *Lighthearted.

Our school didn't bother to warn us about the photos - again! - this year.

I don't iron them. They're non- iron and they're hidden under a jumper.
