Does a school shirt really need ironing?

Surely not.

I had this conversation with DS.

Me: look, if you want your shirts ironing, you need to do it ok.
DS: Ok, I don't think they need doing.
Me: no, it's hardly creased at all. (It's non iron but we all know that's a bit of an oxymoron)
The End - mother son like minded bonding session done.

30 mins later.

DP: I'm going to iron his shirts.
Me: why, they don't need it and I told him he needs to do it. That's some shirt ironing you are signing up for. Two DC, years of school, shirt a day = one million shirts.
DP: (disappointed but not surprised look) they do need ironing. I am doing it.

Context: they wear a blazer which he has so far not taken off. Whilst I would agree if he was just wearing a shirt, it would need ironing. However if you lined up two boys in blazers one ironed shirt and one not, there is no flipping way you could pick out which was which.

DP is the princess from princess and the pea.

I don't iron them.. the collars are fine as well. If they get older and want them ironed they'd be welcome to do it themselves.

TwoMuchTwoYoung · 12/09/2021 19:41

Nope, I taught ds how to iron his shirts as I don’t iron EVER.
He soon gave up but as he very rarely takes his school jumper off then it definitely doesn’t matter.
Tell Dp to crack on but warn him that you’ll never do it.

CMOTDibbler · 12/09/2021 19:41

I never iron them. I buy non iron shirts and they get tumble dried. Should ds desire to iron them he knows where the iron is!

SummerHouse · 12/09/2021 19:41

@PieMistee

I must have saved hours of my life bit ironing shirts. I work full time. I don't want to waste my free time on something unnecessary.
No, the autocorrect knows. Bit ironing is the solution! Do just the collar and v part that you can see. Bit ironing.

@Noshowwithoutpunch

They need ironing. I say this as someone who doesn't iron anything else. Just school shirts.
Yep. This is us (though as I'm doing shirts, I also do skirts / shorts / trousers / dresses).
PileOfBooks · 12/09/2021 19:41

No of course not. JUst hang them when they comd out the dryer.

EileenGC · 12/09/2021 19:42

Yes they do need ironing.

I've put clothes on hangers straight from the washing machine - they do not look the same. Iron an almost identical item, compare side by side. They look different (unless it's a material that doesn't crease).

That said, I love ironing. I'd do it all day long if someone could take care of the cooking and washing up instead).

I'm volunteering to iron your million school shirts a year OP. I'll take one lasagna per week as payment please and thank you Grin

ladymuck111 · 12/09/2021 19:43

They need ironing. I have 15 fucking shirts a week to iron Confused if I could get away without ironing them I would.

KihoBebiluPute · 12/09/2021 19:43

I will not be ironing. If DS gets any eyebrows raised at him for imperfection in his shirt smoothness it will be his problem. DH wears unironed shirts to work because after an hour of commuting it is impossible to tell whether the shirt was ironed before being put on, or not.

madkittylady · 12/09/2021 19:45

Iron NOTHING Grin

Are you ok? Is this a cry for help? One lasagna a week!! You should set up in business and hire a chef with proceeds.

I do iron school shirts, sorry OP!

scrivette · 12/09/2021 19:46

I don't iron them.

However my Mum ironed a load recently and they do look much better - but they are creased and covered in mud/food/grass stains and currently blackberries by lunchtime so I wouldn't bother.

SummerHouse · 12/09/2021 19:47

Iron NOTHING Grin
This really stood out for me. So wise and capitalised. Grin

I used to teach secondary and honestly wasnt aware which were and which werent. Especially under a blazer.

There's no way I'd bother. By the time its worn 30mins it will be the same as the others!

I know I'm not the only one. If you enjoy it go ahead. But dont martyr yourself.

ForkedIt · 12/09/2021 19:48

I could neither confirm nor deny whether we have an iron in the house. I’d bank on yes as it’s the kind of thing we must have picked up across the years but …

SusannaM · 12/09/2021 19:49

M&S non iron, wash then into the dryer. If I line dried then I put them in the dryer for 10mins to de-crease. 5yrs of not ironing.

Comedycook · 12/09/2021 19:49

Don't iron my ds school shirts because he wears a jumper over them. They are also non iron

kowari · 12/09/2021 19:50

Washed at 30, straight onto hangers to dry, no ironing. Only need ironing if you have had to soak them. DS has a polo shirt for summer term and shirts are under a blazer for most of the other two terms.

AliceWo · 12/09/2021 19:51

Drying on hangers means I don't usually need to iron.

Walkingbkwrm · 12/09/2021 19:54

Am afraid I am now in the iron camp.

DS1 just started secondary. I also usually only iron work shirts and I optimistically took the school shirts out of the wash and hung them up and they hung there drying looking creased at me :(. I cracked and ironed them.

But it seems a pretty even split!

couchparsnip · 12/09/2021 19:54

Not ironed a school shirt for years. They have blazers over the top so it's not necessary.

megletthesecond · 12/09/2021 19:55

Never ironed any school uniform.
Line drying blows the creases out.

kowari · 12/09/2021 19:55

Just because they look different doesn't mean they need ironing.

Antsinyourpanta · 12/09/2021 19:56

My DD likes to have her shirt and her horrendous pleated skirt ironed. So far she has resisted learning to do it herself.
Now DS will need a shirt and trousers ironing as well as hes just started secondary.
DH did the age old trick of making such a shit job of it that it's not worth the bother to ask him to do it and the items look worse than they started
