Does a school shirt really need ironing?

Surely not.

I had this conversation with DS.

Me: look, if you want your shirts ironing, you need to do it ok.
DS: Ok, I don't think they need doing.
Me: no, it's hardly creased at all. (It's non iron but we all know that's a bit of an oxymoron)
The End - mother son like minded bonding session done.

30 mins later.

DP: I'm going to iron his shirts.
Me: why, they don't need it and I told him he needs to do it. That's some shirt ironing you are signing up for. Two DC, years of school, shirt a day = one million shirts.
DP: (disappointed but not surprised look) they do need ironing. I am doing it.

Context: they wear a blazer which he has so far not taken off. Whilst I would agree if he was just wearing a shirt, it would need ironing. However if you lined up two boys in blazers one ironed shirt and one not, there is no flipping way you could pick out which was which.

DP is the princess from princess and the pea.

If you ever iron a shirt then it comes to expect it I'm sure and always looks more crumpled.

Pokkadots · 12/09/2021 20:17

No never iron anything, I've had 4 in school shirts

TheQueenOfDreams · 12/09/2021 20:17

Never bothered to iron school shirts until now. Ds is ironing all his shirts for 6th form at this very minute.

Emmelina · 12/09/2021 20:18

If you put on a low spin then on a hanger to dry, they won’t need it.

bellsbuss · 12/09/2021 20:20

I iron all uniform , polo shirts, PE T-shirt's. They look shit otherwise

theDudesmummy · 12/09/2021 20:20

Never iron, hang on hangers on drying rack, they are fine (in Ireland so v rarely not underneath a jumper)

BeaFlowers · 12/09/2021 20:21

My DS does insist on having his school trousers ironed though.
I pointed him in the direction of the iron but I can't for the life of me think where the ironing board is Hmm

Titsywoo · 12/09/2021 20:22

I use my iron once or twice a year at most. I have a good tumble drier and buy clothes that do not crease easily. I will not waste precious minutes of my life making fabric slightly flatter. The kids shirts look absolutely fine.

It drives my mum mad that I don't iron anything. She finds it shocking Grin

RandomMess · 12/09/2021 20:23

My DC actually asked what our ironing board was when we sold it at a car boot sale 🤣

They have a blazer on, if they want clothes ironed post year 6 they do it themselves!!! Great life skill to have.

minipie · 12/09/2021 20:23

What are they made of?

Cotton generally needs ironing, polycotton not really.

TangledTrees · 12/09/2021 20:24

I have NEVER ironed a school shirt in 12 years of having children at school.

And I never will.

I buy no iron shirts from M&S, give them a sharp shake and hang up damp.*

This. M&S non iron shirts, 2 DC who regularly get praise points at secondary for neat uniform.

RandomMess · 12/09/2021 20:24

I iron only a few of my work dresses, think they are silk and of course the linen ones.

They still get done on a gentle wash and dried on hangers so ironing is minimal.

TheVolturi · 12/09/2021 20:26

@Lucked

We are very slovenly parents with a messy house but my kids go to school every day like its passing out day at Sandhurst. Precision ironing!
🤣🤣
mistermagpie · 12/09/2021 20:26

I'm ironing the shirts just now but as soon as it's jumper weather I will stop.

School shirts are literally all I iron though. I don't really give a shit if I'm crumpled but I like the kids to look smart at school!

MsWalterMitty · 12/09/2021 20:28

@Tittie

I will iron a shirt for the very first day of term....but that's it Grin
This is me too 🤣
LarryVeest · 12/09/2021 20:28

My iron hasn't seen the light of day since 2006. Absolutely, categorically no ironing of school shirts here.

SpringRainbow · 12/09/2021 20:29

I have 2 children, I have never ironed any of their school clothes.

I just hang them on coat hangers around the house to dry and that is it.

I hate ironing.

Vinotinto78 · 12/09/2021 20:30

I was raised by a woman who irons bras, pants, socks, dusters, tea towels - you name it. Yes, my childhood was such fun 🙄. This conditioning has turned me into a devoted shirt-ironer. Logically, I know it’s pointless but still I iron. Listening to podcasts makes the task bearable (just).

Zilla1 · 12/09/2021 20:30

Agree with @MilkTwoSugarsThanks if you hang them damp on a hangar then are uncreased enough to meet your DP's standards? If not then let him crack on provided he doesn't drop another chore that he should do as part of his housework and doesn't moan.

Djifunrsn · 12/09/2021 20:31

Never ironed one

Letsgetquizzy · 12/09/2021 20:31

Shirts get ironed for the DC at secondary. Rarely for those at primary.

Ribblechips · 12/09/2021 20:32

I pay someone to do two hours ironing a week. School uniform and DH work shirts are the priority. The rest gets folded instead.

BillyJoe111 · 12/09/2021 20:32

I was forever grateful that ds secondary had polo shirts (that didn’t need ironing).

Until so many parents complained that they didn’t look as smart as the school down the road in shirts ties and blazers, the head was swayed by pressure (by idiots who must love ironing), and it was changed. Thankfully it was the year that ds left school.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 12/09/2021 20:33

No, they don't need ironing. Sharp shake, hang to dry, job's a good'un! Body heat will make any remaining creases drop out.

Phyllis321 · 12/09/2021 20:36

Get a steamer. Mine was £20 and sorts a shirt out in half a minute. No ironing board to battle with.
