Does a school shirt really need ironing?

Surely not.

I had this conversation with DS.

Me: look, if you want your shirts ironing, you need to do it ok.
DS: Ok, I don't think they need doing.
Me: no, it's hardly creased at all. (It's non iron but we all know that's a bit of an oxymoron)
The End - mother son like minded bonding session done.

30 mins later.

DP: I'm going to iron his shirts.
Me: why, they don't need it and I told him he needs to do it. That's some shirt ironing you are signing up for. Two DC, years of school, shirt a day = one million shirts.
DP: (disappointed but not surprised look) they do need ironing. I am doing it.

Context: they wear a blazer which he has so far not taken off. Whilst I would agree if he was just wearing a shirt, it would need ironing. However if you lined up two boys in blazers one ironed shirt and one not, there is no flipping way you could pick out which was which.

DP is the princess from princess and the pea.

No school shirts have been ironed in this house, like ever. And nobody will ever convince me this is necessary.

It’s all in the hanging dahling. Perfect the hanging of wet shirts and you need never discuss this matter again.

Seasidemumma77 · 12/09/2021 19:57

@Tittie

I will iron a shirt for the very first day of term....but that's it Grin
This is what I do.

Nothing bad happens if you don't iron school shirts (especially the non iron ones), frees up my time for more worthwhile activities.

Clymene · 12/09/2021 19:59

I have NEVER ironed a school shirt in 12 years of having children at school.

And I never will.

I buy no iron shirts from M&S, give them a sharp shake and hang up damp.

twinkletoedelephant · 12/09/2021 20:00

Wool ball things in the tumble dryer...job done

Clymene · 12/09/2021 20:00

That said, I'd give you a lasagne if you want to do it @EileenGC

I have to say that I don't care very much if they don't look crisp and like they're about to go into a law firm. Terrible mother.

8Sense8 · 12/09/2021 20:01

Another person here agreeing that non iron M and S shirts are the way to go. I have never felt the need to iron them, especially when tumble dried. If not, and a shirt needs ironing, why not just do the collar if it's under a jumper or just the front if they wear a blazer...

LidlMiddleLover · 12/09/2021 20:01

Nothing really needs ironing for a child and very little for grown ups

NatriumChloride · 12/09/2021 20:02

@CatbellsQueen

That's why I buy M&S non iron shirts. If you get them straight out of the tumble dryer and onto a hanger they look fine
I literally came on this thread to say this, word for word! M&S non iron is the way to go… the school trousers don’t crease either!
Beefmeupscotty · 12/09/2021 20:03

Polos no. Shirt, shirts yes. But not in winter under a jumper. Or girls primary under a pinafore. But unfortunately, most of the time yes. (DHs job though, not mine!)

BlueButterfliesAndPurpleStars · 12/09/2021 20:04

4 words.

Lenor Crease Release Spray.

Game changer!!

DappledThings · 12/09/2021 20:04

I iron everything. I hate putting away clothes that aren't ironed, it just annoys me.

But then I'm very slack with the washing bit. I started separating whites and colours for the first time ever a year ago when DS started school and we suddenly had white items in the house but I've never had enough to make a whites wash so it's pales rather than true whites and they were fairly yellowy by the end of the year. But I'd rather ironed and discoloured than brilliant white and crumpled. Everyone has their personal peccadillos!

TheVolturi · 12/09/2021 20:04

I don't iron. But I iron all of my children school clothes, even school polo's need to be ironed. Shirts defo do.

amter · 12/09/2021 20:04

Never ironed a school shirt. 3 DC and a full time job, literally no time to waste with that nonsense :)

ChoporNot · 12/09/2021 20:08

@StrongArm

Mine both went through the whole of school with not one ironed shirt. If you take them out the washing machine and hang dry, they don't need ironing
This
MyDcAreMarvel · 12/09/2021 20:08

No, even better with girls in pinafores.

MinnieMountain · 12/09/2021 20:09

You iron polo shirts Shock?

I even started wearing dresses to work pre-DC so I wouldn’t have to iron a blouse or shirt.

Lucked · 12/09/2021 20:09

We are very slovenly parents with a messy house but my kids go to school every day like its passing out day at Sandhurst. Precision ironing!

m00rfarm · 12/09/2021 20:09

Another M&S non iron shirt person - they always looked crisp and fresh straight of the tumble drier.

SummerHouse · 12/09/2021 20:10

Thank you all. I feel much educated in the dark arts of non ironing.

I will definitely get m and s non iron in future. If I was a secret marketing person for them I would be patting myself on the back.

Will practice the hanging.

Nope. No ironing here. M&S non iron are the best.
This year I’ve actually got Asda ‘easy iron’ which are actually about as good as the M&S no iron. I hang straight from the dryer.

Empressofthemundane · 12/09/2021 20:13

No, they don’t need ironing.

Askinvillarblues · 12/09/2021 20:13

M&S non iron shirts here - in the washer, straight into the dryer, job done. Buggered if I’m ironing 15 shirts a week for them to get stuffed into school bags an hour after arriving at school when they change for PE.

H1978 · 12/09/2021 20:13

I iron dds shirts and she wears a pinafore over it and then a blazer. I even iron the small sleeves. I think I need to rethink things because I hate ironing.

Twinkie01 · 12/09/2021 20:14

I iron everything, school shirts, bed linen, tea towels and socks. I love the look of freshly ironed clothes.

Can tell from a mile off people who don't iron their clothes.

BeaFlowers · 12/09/2021 20:15

I don't iron shirts. On the rare occasion my DS takes off his jumper, he's just gonna have to look creased
