What's the worst meal you've been served at a wedding?

I'm veggie so unfortunately have had my fair share of shitty wedding meals as the vegetarians often seem to get shafted but this one takes the biscuit. Fancy wedding, very expensive and exclusive venue, meat eaters had a feast and it looked amazing, I was served......a grilled mushroom, and it was cold. This place is probably £100 per head at the very least and the best they could rustle up for a vegetarian was a mushroom. So, make me feel better, what's the worst meal you've been served?

Pub with rooms type venue- food wasn’t even what we pre ordered. Cheap venue and the food was cheap

A wedding a few years ago. Most guests had travelled a long distance. No refreshments at all , not even a glass of anything on arrival. The bar was extortionately priced and after an hour refused to serve tap water as it was hot and all the guests were thirsty but did not want to pay £5.50 for a glass of soft drink. Buffet food which was clearly calculated at one food item per person , one sausage roll, one sandwich etc but of course the first few tables up took a normal plateful and after 4 tables the buffet was empty so the other 6 tables had no food! No drinks for the toast so due to the extortionate bar and refusal to serve tap water the bride and groom were toasted during the speeches with empty hands Confused But then a chocolate fountain and sweetie bar was wheeled out, so odd not a single drink for your guests the entire wedding but you provide a chocolate fountain !
A lot of people left early to go and eat , the local restaurants were full of wedding guests Grin

Oh yes and the cake was wheeled out to be admired but then wheeled back away again and was never cut or shared Confused

Not terrible in itself but once I was served an enormous plate of just plain melon as a starter (vegetarian option) when all the other guests had a soup. Why would they not just make a vegetarian soup for the vegetarians instead?

Hardybloodyhar · 07/09/2021 07:06
@Higgeldypiggeldy35 yeah I always thought the cake was meant to be served as an evening dessert or you give a slice to the guests leaving (and we did at ours and still has a tier to take home) but even our wedding venue said that a lot of people don’t do this anymore and the cake is for show!
Do they recycle the cake for each successive wedding? Or do people sell their used show cakes?

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 07/09/2021 07:08

The worst one was when the couple decided to not pay for have a sit down dinner and just served canapés, and the very few vegetarian ones they did have were immediately snaffled by the non vegetarian guests. We were there from about 10am to 11pm and I had one tiny canape. I was nearly crying with hunger!

A buffet. A beige buffet with no salads or anything that wasn’t beige. It was awful. We nipped out to the chippy. It was a wedding where the bride and groom had a limited budget which is fair enough but the numbers they wanted there, didn’t take the budget far. We didn’t get a drink either. They should have done the wedding well on fewer numbers.

WhatsTheBFD · 07/09/2021 07:16

Again last table, afternoon tea style. One of those tiered things with tiny sandwiches for 8 people. By the time we got ours, every other table had had 3 or 4 refills. We didn’t get a refill.

And it was four fucking hours after the wedding, with nowhere nearby to buy food.

Bertiebassetsbabe · 07/09/2021 07:18

Ordered sausage and mash in a hotel we were staying at. It came with salad and was covered in gravy!

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 07/09/2021 07:18

@makingmyway10 that's so stingy!

@SomethingElf

I'm veggie. This was a death-by-cheese wedding menu: -Starter: goats cheese & rocket thing -Main: cheese based main (think fancy lasagne) -Dessert: cheese cake -Afters: cheese board.
That's my dream menu!

A wedding in Scotland, I was a work colleague so invited to the evening do but not the main thing.

It was a cèilidh and fantastic fun, half way through they stopped and served coffee and tea and wedding cake and that was it.

I thought maybe it was a Scottish thing and bought chips later on.

The best weddings I have been to have been at people's homes. My cousin (this was in Australia) got married in her back yard where we then had food.

The other was a friend who had very little money, and I mean tot he extent her wedding ring is silver. She had a buffet delivered by the local sandwich hop, similar to Greggs so pies, pastries and sandwiches, no one was hungry.

The bar was extortionately priced and after an hour refused to serve tap water as it was hot and all the guests were thirsty but did not want to pay £5.50 for a glass of soft drink

This is illegal, please report tot he council, they can lose their licence for this. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-39881236

Dinkydonk55 · 07/09/2021 07:23

It wasn’t a terrible meal as such it it was a hog roast with tables going up one by one, we were nearest the buffet (at the back) but last to be called up.
It was in Scotland in October in a marquee and I was freezing and hungry, watching other tables eat and move onto pudding then when we finally went up there was very little left

Dinkydonk55 · 07/09/2021 07:24

It was all fine but I think took much longer to serve than they thought for some reason so we must’ve been waiting maybe an hour, and the food was cold too of course

Dinkydonk55 · 07/09/2021 07:25

Oh and then someone stood on the top of my foot with their stiletto heel during the ceilidh.

LouLou198 · 07/09/2021 07:26

One wedding we went to was at 1pm, we were all expecting sit down meal 3-4 ish, nothing til the evening guests arrived at 9pm when there was a buffet! Parents were leaving in droves to pick up happy meals for their dc. Another where the sit down meal in the afternoon was a hot buffet, so everyone had to queue up. Dd was just a few months old and needed feeding at the time. I was therefore of the last ones in the queue and there was nothing left!! I made sure there was plenty at my own wedding, people just get agitated and fed up when they are hungry!

BillyJoe111 · 07/09/2021 07:27

My wedding.

Just a reg office and then a back room of a crap pub.

Awful dry lamb shank, undercooked veg. Really horrible. Quite fitting for the day though.

Surewhynot · 07/09/2021 07:28

Half a pepper with some couscous in it. I’m also a vegetarian so I’ve had more than my fair share of shit meals but that one was a low point.

Mmmmdanone · 07/09/2021 07:28

At a wedding of husband's colleague. Colleague had been boasting about the fab meal he had awaiting us, and I was starving as it was a long wait. Sat down to a table and the waiting staff brought out a buffet to each table; pizza slices, sausage rolls, sandwiches. So disappointed.

BillyJoe111 · 07/09/2021 07:28

Oh and that was at 3pm, no money for any other food later so everyone was just pissed and starving. Some just sacked it all off to go into town and get food, can’t say I blamed them.

lollipoprainbow · 07/09/2021 07:30

Myself and my colleague were invited to our bosses evening wedding reception at a castle !! We were very excited and starved ourselves all day thinking there would be a lavish buffet. The only food we were offered were some tiny tempura vegetables !!

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 07/09/2021 07:37

The one where the bride spent £10,000 on her own dress, but only provided food for the top table. It was a full day too, midday till late evening.

We had no idea beforehand that we weren’t being fed because they didn’t say anything. Boyfriend-of-the-time and I got to about 3pm before hunger and irritation took over and we left.

Only wedding where we’ve left before the first dance.

SushiGo · 07/09/2021 07:41
@SushiGo oh no! Did people start throwing up at the wedding? I got food poisoning once at a wedding. It was a blumin hog roast on a boiling hot day. Veggie options were the side dishes, one of which was a rice salad that was out in the sun. In hindsight I shouldn't have eaten it but I was bloody starving.
Yep, lines of guests sat down in the hallways looking green. We made it halfway to where we were staying in the car before I was sick.

We think it was the sauce on some veg left our at the wrong temp, as veggies and meat eaters were both affected.

It was otherwise a genuinely lovely wedding!

Mermaidpool · 07/09/2021 07:43

We went to one where they said dinner was a hog roast. All we were served was 1 roll with some meat nd a bit of coleslaw at 3pm. Then cupcakes 1 each at about 8pm. Nothing else! It was a barn in the middle of nowhere so couldn't even buy something

kickupafuss · 07/09/2021 07:47

The wedding was at 12 so I travelled there after breakfast and I was very hungry by the time they brought the food out at around 3. It wasn't a meal though just a small buffet like you'd normally have if you went to an evening do. I would have been more understanding if the family were hard up but they were quite well off. I think I had one egg sandwich!
