What's the worst meal you've been served at a wedding?

I'm veggie so unfortunately have had my fair share of shitty wedding meals as the vegetarians often seem to get shafted but this one takes the biscuit. Fancy wedding, very expensive and exclusive venue, meat eaters had a feast and it looked amazing, I was served......a grilled mushroom, and it was cold. This place is probably £100 per head at the very least and the best they could rustle up for a vegetarian was a mushroom. So, make me feel better, what's the worst meal you've been served?

‘Scran’ at a wedding in Liverpool. That’s what it said on the menu anyway, but we were the last table up and got half a ladle of watery stew and I shared a bread roll with DH.

No evening buffet and the cake was wheeled out to be admired but never served. Bar did a roaring trade in crisps and peanuts.

AnneLovesGilbert · 06/09/2021 22:49

I’m also veggie. Went to a madly OTT do at a stately home the couple were still paying off when the divorce went through, I was served sloppy vegetable lasagne that had probably been in the freezer for a decade with a piece grease proof paper half way through.

A lovely wedding reception in a promising looking restaurant, it was an entirely vegan menu for everyone and I got a plate of dry roast stuffed peppers with no stuffing. I was hungry all night.

My sisters wedding ran out of food before we got anywhere near the front of the queue to go up so we ended up sending my DP for Mac Donald's

Same as PP. last table to get up for buffet nothing left.

Hoolihan · 06/09/2021 22:53

Never been served anything really unpleasant but did once have a slice of melon for starter, followed by plain grilled chicken breast, boiled potatoes and boiled broccoli. Scoop ov vanilla ice cream for pudding. An almost entirely flavourless meal.

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 06/09/2021 22:53

@wheelieBinPrincess come to think of it we didn't get cake either! And there was no evening buffet. And there were only enough potatoes for 2 new potatoes each!! Luckily I had snacks in the car because of the amount of shoddy meals I've been served I was half expecting to be hungry.

Not a meal as such but we ended up eating boiled ham with a spoon as the buffet and cutlery had run out by the time it was our turn Hmm

PatchworkElmer · 06/09/2021 22:55

The time we all had nice food but absolutely meagre portions (less than a child’s meal) and were absolutely STARVING. No vegetarian options on the evening buffet at all. And then DH and the other meat eaters on our table were throwing up all night so I assume some of it was ‘bad’ 🤢

WheelieBinPrincess · 06/09/2021 22:55

@Higgeldypiggeldy35 yeah I always thought the cake was meant to be served as an evening dessert or you give a slice to the guests leaving (and we did at ours and still has a tier to take home) but even our wedding venue said that a lot of people don’t do this anymore and the cake is for show!

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 06/09/2021 22:56

@annelovesGilbert eww greaseproof paper in your lasagne. Bleugh.
Shocking about the buffets being nothing left. You need to all follow my advice and cram your car full of snacks haha

Went to a really shit wedding where the bride and groom's families had a buffet and there was nothing for anyone who wasnt family. I think the bride and groom just paid for like £100 buffet, the family were called up first and they helped themselves to all of it. To be fair there was so little there they probably thought there was more food to come out We all stood around drinking (although i was pregnant so sober) and ate all the sweets off the sweet table and watched the family eat all the proper food. The music was shite too.

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 06/09/2021 22:57

@patchworkElmer that had happened to me so many times. Lots of friends did bacon butties or the like in the evening but no veggie option so I ended up having a ketchup butty because I was so hungry

@emeraldraine that's shocking!
It seems so rude to me to not adequately feed your guests. But I'm a massive foody and because I've been on the receiving end of so many bad meals at weddings I went a bit overboard at my own and everyone was too full to dance haha

A big fat nothing - pyramids of Cornish pasties and nothing else at all. All the pasties were beef , with no veggie option.

Anystarinthesky · 06/09/2021 23:01

Mushroom risotto with no mushrooms, just blobs of rice floating in veggie stock.

Afternoon Tea.

Beautiful to look at and delicious. Dainty cucumber sandwiches with no crust, amazing, delicate slices of beautiful cakes. The most aesthetically pleasing meal I've ever seen.

Also totally inadequate as a 'meal' at 4pm for hungry guests who'd been out since 10. The amount of food per person was less than I'd usually give my 4 year old. Every plate was hoovered clean within 5 minutes and we were still starving. The evening buffet wasn't served till 8.30 and people were grumpy and hungry.

wtfisgoingon2021 · 06/09/2021 23:01

Lamb in a mint sauce.
Was like eating chewing gum.
No potatoes or veg or anything accompanied it.
Was as filling as a piece of chewing gum.

SomethingElf · 06/09/2021 23:03

I'm veggie. This was a death-by-cheese wedding menu:
-Starter: goats cheese & rocket thing
-Main: cheese based main (think fancy lasagne)
-Dessert: cheese cake
-Afters: cheese board.

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 06/09/2021 23:04

@marcipex did you say anything to anyone? Once I went to one where there was no veggie evening option and I went and asked if there was something for me. The sourfaced waitress came back half an hour later with a couple of veggie sausages , nothing else with it Grin

@onlyfantastic, were the bride and groom aware everyone was starving?

@somethingelf that sounds amazing haha, but then I love cheese.

I was asked why I wasn’t eating but when I answered they just shrugged at me.
I bought chips on my way home.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 06/09/2021 23:07

Where the meal was actually a buffet. It was perfectly nice but we were one of the last groups to be asked outside to have a special small group photo with the bride and groom (whose food was reserved). By the time we got in most of the buffet had been locusted, and there was barely anything ‘vegetarian’ left unless bread rolls and curly cheese counts.

dunkaccino · 06/09/2021 23:08

A 'beige buffet' at a Premier Inn restaurant. But, and it's a big but, most people had travelled and were staying there, and it had a big play barn for the many children invited. It was actually a really good venue for everyone, even if the food wasn't the best (although nothing really horrid, just lacking a bit of salad and the nicer things that you can get at weddings).
