Stilton, pear & rocket. Just had for my lunch. Yum.

Other ‘gourmet’ cheese sarnies…..

Wensleydale, carrot and apple

Brie and grape

Red Leicester grated and mixed with mayo and purple spring onions

If it really must be cheddar, then it has to be strong vintage stuff, with a fancy tomato or plum relish

Any other cheese snobs?

I think cheese savoury just gets called cheese & onion in the rest of the country and the mayo is implied.

Hmm aioli and lime pickle!!! Controversial cheese-based fusion sarnie. I shall reserve judgement on that one.

Roquefort, walnut, apple and passionfruit
Mozzarella, felafel, avocado, basil, balsamic and honey

Abraxan · 04/09/2021 18:47

Brie and grape on a fresh granary roll or freshly baked white bread.

Not sourdough though - I really don't like sourdough bread and it's getting quite difficult to eat sandwiches out in cafes etc these days as it's all everyone sells!

Toasties - love cheddar and sliced red onion toasted sandwiches

Abraxan · 04/09/2021 18:50

@dreamingbohemian

What is cheese savoury? (sorry non-Brit here!)
At my school they recently did cheese savoury sandwiches as an option. It was grated cheese with finely chopped spring opinion - mixed with Mayo I think.

I liked it when I tried it but it wasn't popular with the children (infant school).

Not sure if that is 'cheese savoury' proper though.

The key features for me would be

Hungry. Nothing tastes very good if not hungry
Brown bread. Always nicer than white bread
No blue cheese . Even hunger can't make it ok
Ditto cheese spread. I'll starve instead.
Must have Mayonnaise not butter/fake butter spread . I hate butter spread on sandwiches. No butter spread -- ever.

everything else is negotiable.
One of my favourites is cream cheese & cucumber on rye slices (from Lidl)
Thanks for the ideas.

@MikeWozniaksGloriousTache

Absolutely not gourmet but cheese savoury .. can never find it outside of the north east though.

I was so happy the day I discovered this was a thing. Growing up in the midlands I was ignorant till my early 20s. Now in the south I have to make my own but it is hands down the most incredible cheese-between-bread concoction ever invented.

Hobbitch · 04/09/2021 20:05

@LemonViolet I cut slices of camembert, layer them between 2 slices of sourdough. That's it. So good.

I also love cheddar and crunchy, salty peanut butter on granary or seeded bread.

@LargeBouquet Ok I'm in! What DH doesn't know can't hurt him :)

CattyMcNips · 04/09/2021 22:31

Bacon, Brie and Cranberry 🤤

Babamamananarama · 05/09/2021 02:06

This week I am enjoying goats cheese, pear and endive. On crusty baguette.

OR halloumi, fried aubergine and red pepper, rocket and mayo in a pitta bread. Known in our house as 'special sandwiches'.

Millicentsparty · 05/09/2021 02:09

M&S Wensleydale and carrot chutney. Best. Sandwich. Ever. 😋

Millicentsparty · 05/09/2021 02:10

Or if they have to be home made, soft cheese, grapes and walnut.

Millicentsparty · 05/09/2021 02:12

@BillinaTheChickenQueen

Marks and sparks used to a really lovely cheese sandwich, it was Wensleydale and a carrots chutney. It must have been discontinued though because it is no where to be seen.
Not discontinued. I had them on Sunday. You can buy the carrot chutney online - not from M&S, though.
Furries · 05/09/2021 03:00

Apple smoked cheddar, ham and red pesto - toasted.

Though for pure laziness, can’t beat an M&S cheese and onion sandwich.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 05/09/2021 13:16

I’m glad others are feeling the love for cheese savoury. It’s not just cheese and onion, it’s got to have carrots and the pre made pots from supermarkets are always shite. Usually too much Mayo / sauce, the proper stuff from a bakery is top level.

MeredithGreyishblue · 05/09/2021 13:24

@Millicentsparty

M&S Wensleydale and carrot chutney. Best. Sandwich. Ever. 😋
Do they still do the cheese and celery one? That was FIT!
Millicentsparty · 05/09/2021 14:38

@MeredithGreyishblue. Yes, they do.

OhWhyNot · 05/09/2021 14:49

Cheddar and cucumber or onion (with onion or tomato is lovely toasted too)

I like french bread (not as a sandwich) with Brie, saint Agur or cheddar with a nice tangy pickle

Also love Brie, cranberry and Wensleydale, Stilton pickles with crackers might have this for dinner tonight

BananaMilkshakeWithCream · 06/09/2021 19:27

Brie, crispy bacon and chilli jam on seeded bread.

Millicentsparty · 06/09/2021 22:21

@BananaMilkshakeWithCream. What is this chili jam of which you speak? And where may it be bought?

BananaMilkshakeWithCream · 07/09/2021 07:50

@Millicentsparty It’s this kind of thing. You can buy it at all the major supermarkets, we’ve tried loads!

Thanks Banana. Looked it up. I love sweet chilli sauce so I'm definitely going try this jam. Oh dear, diet delayed another week!
