Are you stockpiling?

Are you stockpiling food, clothes, toys, medicines? I’ve gotten a bit worried lately with the news of price increases and limited supplies. Shelves seem fairly full where I am (London) but perhaps that’s not going to last? Can’t help but notice much of my food comes from abroad, not to mention medicines, DC clothes and toys, etc.

I’m a bit skint already but if prices will rise and I can do a bit of Christmas shopping for DC now I reckon I’d rather have it sorted.

@Miniroofbox Now I'm confused, I thought you didn't need to go out because you had some stuff & relied on friends?

Miniroofbox · 02/09/2021 20:10

Not me but my friends weren’t buying it for me because I had it on the house

Miniroofbox · 02/09/2021 20:10

In the house. Not on the roof. 😂

muffinfaces · 02/09/2021 20:11

Did you actually have enough loo roll that you didn't need any extra during those months of confinement?

Miniroofbox · 02/09/2021 20:11

I had 18 loo rolls and live alone. I use a roll a week. I had plenty.

muffinfaces · 02/09/2021 20:12

So your friends didn't buy anything for you?

Miniroofbox · 02/09/2021 20:14

No they bought me bits and pieces but I didn’t need pasta. Tomatoes. Beans. They bought mostly fresh stuff like milk and fresh fruit (apples, bananas, oranges, some berries) and veg. Mostly onions and potatoes 😂. No turnips. Or kale.

I didn’t have enough squash or interesting drinks.

muffinfaces · 02/09/2021 20:16

Ok so you relied on them & your tins/pasta as I thought.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/09/2021 20:16

Oh wow, this thread is a blast from the past. Is there a word for: 'nostalgia, but in a shite way'?

Miniroofbox · 02/09/2021 20:16

I did run out of kitchen roll but I also had cloths (old nappies mostly) and I used them when there wasn’t any kitchen roll.

Not quite sure why I’m being interrogated and it’s making me feel really rather upset at this point. It was a very difficult time in my life and I did my best and now I’m being castigated for it.

muffinfaces · 02/09/2021 20:17

@JesusInTheCabbageVan 😆😆

ThisBeTheName · 02/09/2021 20:18

I get a few extra bits.
He stockpiles.
They panic buy.

FreakinFrankNFurter · 02/09/2021 20:18

I`ve got 3 eyebrow pencils, does that count?
I only bought them as i tried one from Aldi and really liked it so bought two more before they sell out

AfternoonToffee · 02/09/2021 20:19

Waste always really grieves me and when I saw people buying gallons of milk, I had the suspicion that when it transpired that supply lines were running just fine, they would just bin their greedy hoard.

Don't worry we drink that gallons of milk you saw me buy. I should just cut out the middle man and have a cow in the garden.

By some standards I probably do stockpile but I would say I generally have about 2 weeks worth of stuff in at a time with the things that have been on offer / cheaper to bulk buy as outliers. I'll just be more sure that it stays at that level.

TooBigForMyBoots · 02/09/2021 20:20

Aw no.🤦‍♀️ Should I be?

I did think to order my M&S Christmas duck early, but apart from that, I haven't done anything. Am I being a Grasshopper mum?

muffinfaces · 02/09/2021 20:20

I'm not castigating you for it my point was just some people imagine stockpiling = big piles of food for months.

The only thing short in my area was yeast & I still had a full freezer but I would never consider that a stockpile as it was largely stuff I didn't fancy! I also had no problems with food deliveries.

To be fair to you that is a "shopping at Aldi" way of doing things.

The more people stockpile
The less provision there is
The more people panic
Start over

See how this doesn't help anyone? So the answer is no...

You did nothing wrong, please don't be upset.

I didn't read your post and assume you had mountains of food. Being confined to the house for three months doesn't mean you had three months worth of everything, I'm not sure why people think it did. .

I'm CEV and my health condition drops me on my arse regularly and can often go weeks without being able to get out to a shop. I try to keep a week or twos worth of food in my cupboards. People who'd usually help shop when I'm sick and needed something often couldn't because supermarkets were limiting the amount of items people could buy and when they had their own family and other CEV relatives to buy they weren't always able to add my weekly shop added to theirs.

I grew up with nothing, If my dad decided not to pay child support (and he often didn't because he was a cunt) then we were fucked, wiping arses on newspaper and sleeping in coats and having sandwiches cos the electric had gone off. I try keep plenty of toilet roll for that reason, I put extra on my electric when I can afford to and i try to keep my freezer and cupboards full. I can't pop out to the shops everyday pre covid and I certainly wasn't starting in the middle of it, and I'd feel like a cheeky cunt expecting someone else to make multiple trips because stuff was missing from my delivery.

Everybody has different circumstances, it's natural for some people to have a couple of weeks worth of supplies, and it's sensible in some circumstances. Some people have several houses, or more money than they'll every need, I can imagine the responses if someone called them selfish bastards for stockpiling cash and property they don't need. I don't actually think they are bastards and you certainly aren't either.

Neverrains · 02/09/2021 21:16

Kitchen roll isn’t really a necessity… I haven’t bought it for years! I use washable cloths for spills etc.

Miniroofbox · 02/09/2021 21:20

I use it to mop the solid grease out of my frying pan and then it goes in the compost bin mostly.

I was also newly disabled (still am) and washing things was an issue so I used kitchen roll to wipe round as it was easier for me than trying to stockpile loads of washing until my dc could come to wash it for me.

Miniroofbox · 02/09/2021 21:21

God forbid I might have done the thing that made my life easier when I was in a bloody wheelchair unable to walk or bend and doped up to the fucking eyeballs on painkillers and facing a lifetime of disability. Trying to manage living alone with help only occasionally from my kids and friends doing shopping for me (for which I was and remain immensely grateful).

Fuck me this place is a disgrace at times.

Alright, it wasn’t a criticism. You can use whatever you want! I’d just noticed a few people on the thread saying they stockpiled kitchen roll when it was on offer and thought it was a bit odd as it’s not something I’d ever think of as being essential. Many apologies for offending you.
