Are you stockpiling?

Are you stockpiling food, clothes, toys, medicines? I’ve gotten a bit worried lately with the news of price increases and limited supplies. Shelves seem fairly full where I am (London) but perhaps that’s not going to last? Can’t help but notice much of my food comes from abroad, not to mention medicines, DC clothes and toys, etc.

I’m a bit skint already but if prices will rise and I can do a bit of Christmas shopping for DC now I reckon I’d rather have it sorted.
@YetAnotherSpartacus there's a whole world of restaurants & fast food places out there but if you like your tins, crack on!
There speaks someone with more money than sense.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 05/09/2021 12:30

It's not just about you though :)

Or taste :)

shouldbeworkingmore · 05/09/2021 12:31

Where did I say it was?

Do you not eat out ever? I'm not sure why preferring restaurants over tinned foods means I have more money then sense?

shouldbeworkingmore · 05/09/2021 12:36

Or taste :)

Why do you look down on people who eat Mcdonald's? I don't see the problem with a meal there every now & then. Yes it's not the healthiest option or my preferred choice by any stretch. But it serves a purpose so I can't get snobby about it.

Tyredofallthis1 · 05/09/2021 12:42

This thread has gone in very odd directions.

And there have been times in my life when a McDonalds was something of a luxury as the cost was soooooo out of budget.

So when I see a good deal on something that I like, I commit.

shouldbeworkingmore · 05/09/2021 12:43

@Tyredofallthis1 you can get BOGOF mcdonald's vouchers 😆

shouldbeworkingmore · 05/09/2021 12:44

I honestly had no idea saying I would rather have a McDonalds over tinned foods for days would derail so much. Who know it was so controversial?! 😆

Ditto as a student boiled rice with an Oxo cube and a splash of chutney was great. As a newly wed I had a tight budget and added up everything I bought. As a young mummy of 2. Every penny was counted.

Since then we put three through private education, paid every penny of their student loans. Lent them money at times. We could eat out daily now.

BUT have never forgotten when we were as poor as church mice, a steak and a bottle of wine was an anniversary treat at home and still is after four decades for nostalgic reasons

shouldbeworkingmore · 05/09/2021 12:55

@justasking111 I don't understand your point. I went to prep but the costs are a different story these days & I was born in the 80s.

Counting every penny is not going to help you afford 17k of prep fees per child if you earn an average wage.

Tyredofallthis1 · 05/09/2021 13:01

@shouldbeworkingmore but you have to buy one to get one free.

Not always been possible. I'm okay now, not rolling in it.

shouldbeworkingmore · 05/09/2021 13:02

True

Fair enough we set up our own business, struggling for a long time, holidays were a rare treat, cars old Banger nursed along while I walked, cycled bussed everywhere.

My point is when there were deals on food they were grabbed stored away as my farming ancestors did. We've just made many lbs of crabapple, damson, and plum jam . Tomato crops now Ragu bases.

I find the attitude to the poor of let them eat cake/takeaway deeply offensive

Again I don't understand the point you are making. Statistically people struggle more when they are younger vs when they are older because they often have higher costs & lower wages which reduce & increase as you age.
Holidays are still a treat for most & lots of people drive older cars.

Who has said that?

Surely it's far more offensive to suggest that despite your background by not going on holiday, driving a banger, stocking up on food will mean that you too can *put three through private education, paid every penny of their student loans. Lent them money at times. We could eat out daily now.

I can't stand this weird faux morality some attach to economising.

AfternoonToffee · 05/09/2021 13:20

@Tyredofallthis1 I think it was you who mentioned about baked beans, if you have a Farm Foods near you they were 2 packs for £6 or 4 for £10. I know by sharing this I am encouraging you down a path of pure selfishness, but I'm just taking you down with me. Wink

Tyredofallthis1 · 05/09/2021 13:27

@AfternoonToffee Thank you, I'll have a look and see if I can find one!

I've only been able to get out the last few years (agrophobia) and now I can drive, looking around shops and searching for bargains has become sort of a hobby. I can get to a farm shop now which used to be out of reach.

Perhaps that's another point. I started online shopping around 1999 (before the millenia, after 1997) with Tesco. I didn't want to keep paying the delivery charge so I used to get a month of groceries at a time, and I'd stock up a little more when there were good offers because I couldn't get to the shops.

Some of my neighbours in the past couldn't do online shopping because they didn't have a bank account or only had a basic account.

I agree with @shouldbeworkingmore, not sure what point you’re making. Private school can be £30k pa where I am, putting three kids through private school at full cost is out of reach for most people, no wonder how much they scrimp and save. It’s just not possible.

If you have a profitable business then that’s good for you but not the reality for many.

Agoraphobia was a demon that chased me for two decades. Well done for getting out and about again.

shouldbeworkingmore · 05/09/2021 13:37

@takehomepay the thread has got even stranger 😆

Tyredofallthis1 · 05/09/2021 13:45

@justasking111 Thank you. I passed my driving test, so I can drive but I still struggle to walk anywhere. I can see the building of my GP from my window, but I'm considering switching to one further away so I can drive. But I'm getting better and I really appreciate the good wishes.

It meant that I needed to have a full food cupboard, though, especially at winter, because I couldn't just nip out.

goose1964 · 05/09/2021 13:58

We have a Brexit stash which we're using and replacing. I've also started buying stuff for Christmas. This year's problem is whether my daughter and her family will be able to come up. She's a carer but on Rota and my son in law doesn't know where he'll be working but if it's his current job he'll probably be working Christmas eve.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/09/2021 19:04

what do you mean by christmas?
presents, mince pies?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/09/2021 21:01

@Goldbar

none of us will die without pigs in blankets

No, but keeping a pig in the backyard and investing in a sausage-making kit isn't a bad idea if people are worried. Pigs need surprisingly little space (around 8 square feet per pig) and curing meat is quite simple when you get the knack of it.

What about the slaughtering?

Is that quite simple when you get used to it?

Do you ever get used to it?
