Are you stockpiling?

Are you stockpiling food, clothes, toys, medicines? I’ve gotten a bit worried lately with the news of price increases and limited supplies. Shelves seem fairly full where I am (London) but perhaps that’s not going to last? Can’t help but notice much of my food comes from abroad, not to mention medicines, DC clothes and toys, etc.

I’m a bit skint already but if prices will rise and I can do a bit of Christmas shopping for DC now I reckon I’d rather have it sorted.

But "stockpiling" that is to hold a large quantity of goods for many gives mental images of store rooms filled to the brim with 40 bags of pasta, 82 tins of baked beans and 900 loo rolls.

But who does that? We are nott talking about silly quantities.
I like to hold extra provisions- it's the way I live my life.
For lots of reasons. Buying reduced or items on clearance when they are cheap, I don't enjoy running out of stuff, local shops are expensive, and I am prepared for emergencies. My local shop is great, but I don't want to pay 90p for a can of tomatoes. I prefer to buy 20 cans at 30p each.

muffinffaces · 02/09/2021 17:13

Oh god, why?!

muffinffaces · 02/09/2021 17:14

And surely this is panic buying since your motivation is

I’ve gotten a bit worried lately with the news of price increases and limited supplies.

muffinffaces · 02/09/2021 17:17

It gives images of that because people often talk about have 3 months stock, that's a lot of stock!

PaulGallico · 02/09/2021 17:17

I think we all try to be organised and not run out of stuff. However I find the smug 'I like to hold extra provisions' really dull - find something else to do/discuss than whether or not sainsbury's pasta is made in Italy or whether we can make room for extra tins of beans. Must rush out now to stockpile some sprouts.

muffinffaces · 02/09/2021 17:30

I had a situation where I was stuck in for months and I used my “stockpile” and was bloody grateful for it too.

See months of food! That's what conjures up the images of mental store rooms.

Miniroofbox · 02/09/2021 17:31

I didn’t say I only used my stockpile did I?

muffinffaces · 02/09/2021 17:33

Gradual stockpiling in a sensible manner HELPS the shops when everyone rushes in to panic buy as the sensible stockpilers can stay away.

I don't understand this, how is the OP helping if she starts stockpiling now? The Christmas stock will have been ordered.

The idea that stockpilers are sensible & help & that everyone else is a panic buyer & buys 100 bags of potatoes despite not liking them is nonsense.

muffinffaces · 02/09/2021 17:34

@Miniroofbox you said you were stuck in for months hence why it conjures up the mentioned images.

Yeah, I didn't say that, though, did I? Hmm

muffinfaces · 02/09/2021 18:13

Where did I say you did say that?

However how is the OP stockpiling in a sensible manner if she starts now since shortages have been in the media already?

muffinfaces · 02/09/2021 18:15

On MN there seems to be this idea that stockpilers are very different to panic buyers, I just think in the real world the lines are blurred.

shesellsseacats · 02/09/2021 18:17

I really think this thread shows how out of touch with reality people are.

Keeping enough supplies in the cupboard to see you through hard times is a basic of household management that our ancestors would have instinctively understood.

We've become dependent on our modern, global, supply chain yet after people saw a glimpse of how precarious it really is, you've all somehow allowed yourself to be convinced that taking sensible measures to protect yourself against it breaking down is sinful!

Yes, panic buying causes massive problems, we all saw that. But gradual and sensible stock piling does not. It's a sensible response to the increasingly uncertain times we're living in.

Sinful? You need to get out more! Plus there's a world of difference between an extra bag of pasta & beans vs months of supplies.

Having extra pasta doesn't make me less concerned about Afghani women or climate change though.

shesellsseacats · 02/09/2021 18:31

Prize for most irrelevant and deliberately obtuse comment on the thread.

muffinfaces · 02/09/2021 18:35

Awh shucks, I would like to thank my mum & god &...

muffinfaces · 02/09/2021 18:37

But is the OP a sensible stockpiler though?

Miniroofbox · 02/09/2021 19:20
@Miniroofbox you said you were stuck in for months hence why it conjures up the mentioned images.
I said I was stuck in for months and used my larder and stockpile (as it’s known on this thread)

Because I had beans. Some when I was depending on people to shop for me I didn’t need to get them to get them for me and I could use the ones I had rather than pay £1.20 a tin at the local shop.

Ditto tomatoes. Tomato soup.

I used the food I had in my freezer. And replaced it.

It wasn’t ALL I ate but it was bloody useful for me at that time because I was depending on others to do my shopping and put it away. I could not carry groceries in or put them all away (still can’t)

You made a leap there that I never said.

muffinfaces · 02/09/2021 19:42

Your misunderstanding my point @Miniroofbox.

A poster talked about "But "stockpiling" that is to hold a large quantity of goods for many gives mental images of store rooms filled to the brim with 40 bags of pasta, 82 tins of baked beans and 900 loo rolls."

Another poster said but why do people think that & I highlighted your post because you said " I had a situation where I was stuck in for months and I used my “stockpile” and was bloody grateful for it too."
The point is when someone says they have months worth of food that's the images it conjures up. It's irrelevant in your case that you didn't actually have months of food but relied on friends getting stuff for you.

Miniroofbox · 02/09/2021 19:50

But why highlight my post? You were wrong. I never said that was all I ate. Never.

LovePoppy · 02/09/2021 19:54

@Miniroofbox

But why highlight my post? You were wrong. I never said that was all I ate. Never.
Lack of reading comprehension is my guess
muffinfaces · 02/09/2021 19:54

As I said to use as an example! It's not about what you did or didn't eat or the fact you only had a few tins, it's because you used the timeframe of months hence why people imagine huge amounts of food. I'm not sure what you are struggling to understand?

naynayisay · 02/09/2021 19:55

I only stockpile Diet Coke as the local Asda keeps running out of the big boxes & I'm an addict.

Miniroofbox · 02/09/2021 20:01

And I’m not sure what you didn’t understand in what I posted.

I have a stock of food. Cheap tins of tomatoes and Heinz beans mostly.

Some stuff in my freezer and extra loo roll.

When I was confined to my home and in lockdown I used that (stock (along with other items) so I DIDNT need to go out and buy loo rolls or pasta when people were struggling to get them.
And yet somehow I’m all the bastards.

Mantlemoose · 02/09/2021 20:05

ffs no and anyone who stockpiles as opposed to having enough to last 2 weeks in the event of illness is absolutely selfish.
