the photo of her leaving the party does not imply a young woman who has been raped.

Jesus Christ!

Are we still deciding we can tell someone has been raped by how they look???

Maireas · 10/08/2021 09:54

Meanwhile Sarah Ferguson is touting her Mills and Boon book on prime time tv, describing Andrew as a "thoroughly decent, kind man".
Ridiculous.

VeryLongBeeeep · 10/08/2021 10:21

I hope to god none of the women here with such abhorrent internalised misogyny are ever on a jury for a rape case...not that many even get to court these days.

Maireas · 10/08/2021 10:38

Indeed. Some of these comments, that girls do it "willingly" or are somehow party to their own exploitation is offensive in the extreme.

TheMarzipanDildo · 10/08/2021 11:23

This thread is really fucking upsetting. Just people who obviously don’t know much about the case accusing VR of gold-digging. This is how powerful men get away with this shit.

ElliottSmithsfingers · 10/08/2021 11:36

I don't normally get upset at Internet threads but this has really disturbed me. Anybody who's had even a passing interest in the epstein case will have no doubt that this was a prolific pedophile abuser. There was an excellent documentary (certainly not easy viewing) on Netflix. Everyone who has associated with the man on his private island (where did he get all that money? He started as a basic Wall St trader) is implicitly tainted by association. It's unclear how he built his network of access to some of the most powerful men in the world. That the focus on this thread is whether a 17 year old can be raped as a minor (wtf?), or whether they are now chasing some cash as compensation (which they richly deserve anyway) makes me sick.

Farevalah · 10/08/2021 12:03

I wonder if the queen thinks he's innocent, hence her protection of him, or does she think its acceptable behaviour?
Remember Charlie being very good friends with JS and also Peter Ball?
Some of the upper classes don't seem to have the same morals as the rest of us mere mortals.

SupermanWithTheGreyHair · 10/08/2021 12:08

I agree that the minimising and excusing on this thread is upsetting.... and also just weird. Something very strange about it.

I agree.
Maybe the 77th brigade have infiltrated MN?!

@THisbackwithavengeance

I really don't know much about the case.

But I am sceptical of this woman with a bunch of lawyers trying to get ££££. The main perpetrator of any crime is dead so surely this comes down to negative public opinion, a media witchhunt and spurious allegations?

I also don't understand how the trafficking claim came about? Was VR not in a consenting sexual relationship with JE? I thought she was his girlfriend? She was 17 which is above the age of consent which makes the whole thing unpalatable and sleazy but not illegal, surely? I also see the word 'rape' bandied around here which I also don't understand as having sex with a 17 year old doesn't automatically make someone a rapist which seems to have been somehow become a fact on MN.

If anyone can recommend or link any unbiased fact based news sources I would be grateful as opposed to "PA is a sweaty rapist nonce" I would be grateful as I would like to educate myself on this.

My personal opinion on this matter is the PA should be called to account in the US courts the same day that AS is extradited for causing death by dangerous driving. Not going to happen.

Oh good god. This has to be a goad. If not, you do badly need educating. There is plenty out there but none looks good for PA.

Same here.

Unfortunately one thing I've noticed on Mumsnet is that there's a worrying minority of posters with very concerning attitudes to safeguarding, on threads like this people seem quick to minimise a child being sexually abused, and on others people can be quick to stick the boot into posters who are asking for advice about reporting safeguarding concerns.

It really bothers me that some people seem to care so little about the welfare of children.

Fully agree some of the a posts here are utterly shameful 😕
HopeMumsnet · 10/08/2021 13:10

Hi all,
Thanks to those posters who have reported any rape myths to us.
We just wanted to take this opportunity to flag up our We Believe You campaign, it might be helpful to introduce those who are so far unfamiliar to the issues at stake.

knittingaddict · 10/08/2021 13:13

Saw it on the news this morning and it made my day.

knittingaddict · 10/08/2021 13:17

Have the people here, who don't believe the women in this case, read about JE or know anything about it? I assume not.

LastSummerHere · 10/08/2021 13:18

@Mandalay246

This thread is so sad. Women will never be respected, believed or equal, will they?

Are you trying to say that no woman has ever lied, especially when large sums of money are involved? When that stops women probably will be believed, until then, no.

And yet, and yet.....85,000 women are sexually assaulted in E&W every year. The number of false allegations are on par with false allegations of other crimes, around 1-3%.

We all know of a woman who has been raped, yet not many people appear to know the male rapists. Why? Because the men are LYING! Men lie in their thousands about the women they rape, yet they are still believed over women.

Louis Walsh and Paul Gambacini are just two high profile men who were falsely accused of sexual assault....by men. Yet STILL men are believed. Going by your argument, why are they?

SpindleWhorl · 10/08/2021 13:20

Thanks, @HopeMumsnet.

I remember when Jimmy Savile was finally being exposed after his death, and the first women to come forward about what happened to them as children were absolutely vilified as money grubbers, including on MN.

Turns out, the women were 100% truthful. Powerful people and whole institutions had shamefully been looking away, including Savile's royal mates.

I think MN deleted the victim-blaming posts (and while threads), and while there cries of 'censorship' it was nevertheless part of a growing awareness on the site that vulnerable girls and women, including those who had less than optimal parenting, do not inherently lack the capacity for honesty. (I'm being very polite there.)

BrilloPaddy · 10/08/2021 13:20

Excuse my ignorance on the subject, but why has she filed in the US?

knittingaddict · 10/08/2021 13:22

@Terhou

What evidence are you aware of that would support her suing others?

We don't actually know what evidence there is that supports her in suing Prince Andrew, not being privy to the court papers. But she claims to have been trafficked, so logically the traffickers should be in the frame.

I don't think you understand what trafficking means in this case. They aren't a group of mafia types selling girls to rich men. The rich men, and at least one woman, are the traffickers. It's obvious you know nothing about this case and I suggest you look it up.
Sadiecow · 10/08/2021 13:22

@newstart1337

Is there any actual evidence?
Apart from she has confirmed she was forced to have sex with him, age 17?

AKA Rape.

I wonder why so many rape victims don't press charges.........

LastSummerHere · 10/08/2021 13:22

@Maireas

Indeed. Some of these comments, that girls do it "willingly" or are somehow party to their own exploitation is offensive in the extreme.

They're useless, woman hating dicks. No understanding at all of the girls trying to 'control' the narrative of the abuse that they suffered in their lives. These stupid posters have nothing to say at all about rich men abusing their wealth and power positions to abuse children. They just wave away the trauma of these children because they believe rich, powerful men have a right to their bodies. Internalised misogyny is a fucking curse.
