Ideas to make the coming autumn lovelier ( or at least a little more bearable)

Looking out at the garden this evening I can see the light is a little more golden and the shadows a little longer. Autumn is around the corner, which I normally greatly look forward to on a hot late-August drive home through France, piled high with wine, well-read and dripping with idleness. I suspect this year’s bracing camping in Wales might just be a reminder of the rain and mud to come.

Any ideas to make the coming season a little nicer? So far I’ve come up with :

Blowing my birthday John Lewis voucher on a nice candle ( Diptyque Feu de Bois) and a couple of velvet scatter cushions
A houseplant for my bathroom window
Booking some riding lessons for all of us
Embracing the darker mornings and getting up early to walk the dog. Also, joining a beginners agility group.
Regular swimming and encouraging the kids to come too
A lovely bath foam ( I like L’Occitaine almond)
Buying good pyjamas and new boots
Planning some pretty woodland walks
Planning some good autumnal food (crumbles, stews)
If possible, doing a few days extra work and booking for DD and I to go to Paris. That might be wishful thinking as my summer energy ebbs.

Any other ideas welcome! 🍂

Tomorrow I will be picking sloes to get the christmas gin started.
The other day I bought a whole loads of lovely wax melts in pretty boxes for the coffee table, also a 'winter' candle from the white company to go on my lovely new huge silvered glass candlestick. I was going to wait a while before I used it but this summer has been such a miserable washout I need to 'up my mood'. I have also bought new DM long length boots which I will wear while collecting conkers with my dgs.

Oh, and Im also eyeing up the teasels in the lane, ready to pick for an autumn flower arrangement.

@GromblesofGrimbledon thank you, we'll have a wonderful autumn with our newborns, it'll be so special! 💝 I love the sound of your pumpkin tradition!

As I’ve said before, I’m really not a fan of autumn/winter.

So I hold you lot responsible for the fact that I’ve just ordered an autumn garland for my fireplace.

But even more so for the fact that I’m now decorating my living room so that the backdrop is suitable to have 2 sets of curtains/rugs/cushions etc - one lot for spring/summer and the other for autumn/winter.

Whatliesbeneath707 · 31/08/2021 10:52

Ha ha @Furries - influenced!
Does it look lovely? 🎃

Needhelp101 · 31/08/2021 11:27

@MintyCedric, yes the Galbraith/Rowling book! I've read it and the second in the series but not the others, so that'll be something to look forward to. I'm also working my way through the Discworld series again.

Sense and Sensibility and the 90s BBC series of Pride and Prejudice would be a good autumn watch 🍁🍂

mbosnz · 31/08/2021 11:34

I've just realised I have once again accidentally decorated our living room for autumn. Red, russet, and green. . . And now I want to get curtains in those colours. Preferably in a highland check. . .

MintyCedric · 31/08/2021 11:41

@Needhelp101 I'm a huge Strike fangirl Blush.

If you ever fancy indulging in some related fan fiction give me a shout Grin!

Furries · 31/08/2021 12:04

@Whatliesbeneath707 - the garland looks lovely in the photo online, it’s due to arrive early next week.

If you’re asking about the decorating, then I’ll come back in about 6 months to let you know! It’s a fairly big room with 8ft ceilings and enough beams to build a ship with - it’s going to take me ages 😂

I’m stomping around with a paintbrush and cursing this thread under my breath!

Needhelp101 · 31/08/2021 12:08

@MintyCedric I will 😁

Thinking about it, the BBC series of the first two books would also be a great autumn watch. Might put that on tonight!

You’ve all made me jealous. I don’t have a fireplace Sad

Would an autumnal Garland look daft on a bookshelf?

Justmuddlingalong · 31/08/2021 15:51

Talking of not having a fireplace...there are videos on YouTube of log fires burning. It's fab to have on the TV when you've got peace to cosy up on the sofa, under a blanket, reading.

Not at all, I think it would look lovely Smile
lucysmam · 31/08/2021 20:22

@Justmuddlingalong you'd need to be able to work Youtube on the tv first to do that, I can only just work out how to turn it on Grin Blush

evtheria · 31/08/2021 21:10

@PrincessMaryaBolkonskaya Ours is blocked up! I’m filling it with a floral arrangement, I think a garland winding along a bookshelf would look lovely, you could add a little (flameless flickering) pillar candle or two among it all.

Shelleyjelly80 · 01/09/2021 12:02

Happy 1st September everyone!

Happy Autumn...made carrot and coriander soup and homemade sourdough for lunch so definitely getting in the spirit!

autumnapplepicking · 01/09/2021 15:20

This thread is wonderful 🍂
I've bought some new beanie hats and am looking for a new scarf this Autumn.
Crisp late morning walks at the weekend with a pumpkin spiced coffee.
Cooking pizza in the pizza oven outside and sitting next to the chiminea wrapped in blankets.
Making soups with homegrown veggies and baking cosy puddings at the weekend.
So much to look forward to ☺️🍂

That sounds lovely! I should have said, shelves are full of books. I’m not sure the candles would work. But def feel some leaves might be bought! Smile

Peppaismyrolemodel · 01/09/2021 17:37

@Cheesecheeseboard

Love autumn but I cannot relax in my home from about end of August as I’m on spider watch 😞😞 I’m petrified of them
My autumn starts with a 1st September indorex-session around all the doorways/windows/fireplaces 😬 que much dead-dropping the next night and then none until spring 💪
Justmuddlingalong · 01/09/2021 18:28

Bought a 2 pack of smart plugs for when the nights get darker. Can use the timer to switch them on at set times or put them on via a phone app. It's nicer to come home to a lit house when you've been out in the dark/cold. I'm thinking of using the other one to switch the kettle on to boil, just before I get in. ☕ 😋

TerrylikesYoghurt · 01/09/2021 18:42

It’s been lovely and autumnal here today. I’m just back from picking blackberries, ready for a crimble crumble with posh custard later. I’ve also been adding to my Autumn Pinterest board with lots of ideas from this thread!

imisscoffee · 01/09/2021 20:30

I love this thread! I've already had 2 pumpkin spice lattes and have been burning my Yankee Candle Witche's Brew wax tart today, it's my favourite autumn scent and I always stock up. I've bought some tinned pumpkin puree from Sainsbury's and will attempt to bake a pumpkin pie this year. Treating myself to a nice snuggly scarf and more heat for your feet socks (they have a tog rating and are the best socks I've ever had).
