Ideas to make the coming autumn lovelier ( or at least a little more bearable)

Labradabradorable · 08/08/2021 19:31

Looking out at the garden this evening I can see the light is a little more golden and the shadows a little longer. Autumn is around the corner, which I normally greatly look forward to on a hot late-August drive home through France, piled high with wine, well-read and dripping with idleness. I suspect this year’s bracing camping in Wales might just be a reminder of the rain and mud to come.

Any ideas to make the coming season a little nicer? So far I’ve come up with :

Blowing my birthday John Lewis voucher on a nice candle ( Diptyque Feu de Bois) and a couple of velvet scatter cushions
A houseplant for my bathroom window
Booking some riding lessons for all of us
Embracing the darker mornings and getting up early to walk the dog. Also, joining a beginners agility group.
Regular swimming and encouraging the kids to come too
A lovely bath foam ( I like L’Occitaine almond)
Buying good pyjamas and new boots
Planning some pretty woodland walks
Planning some good autumnal food (crumbles, stews)
If possible, doing a few days extra work and booking for DD and I to go to Paris. That might be wishful thinking as my summer energy ebbs.

Any other ideas welcome! 🍂

Can anybody link to some nice fairy lights? I can only seems to find the harsh led ones. I need some for inside my fireplace.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 08/08/2021 21:46

I love this thread so much.

I know it's not a popular thing to say, but I really dislike summer, it's too warm and there are wasps everywhere, I am miserable!

But autumn is golden, I love the smell of the fires, love going for walks which I normally hate, and I love being at a normal temperature!

For me I'd add collecting conkers with the kids, changing meal plans to more hearty warming foods and lots of candles.

Great ideas on changing the billows and adding throws, I am going to look online for some ideas now!

I’m booking a holiday in Madeira for October to set me up for the winter. I hate cold, wet and mud!

Justmuddlingalong · 08/08/2021 21:48

@Parentingdilemmas you can get battery operated imitation candles, some have timers you can set or remote controls.

Try Lights 4 Fun.

I love threads like this, I am so over summer already and looking forward to the autumn.

It's an extravagant purchase.. but if you can afford it can I just suggest a Velvetiser from Hotel Chocolat for hot chocolates on cold nights. Massive game changer here and not sure I could live without one now Grin

DrFoxtrot · 08/08/2021 21:55

Watching! I love the idea of wearing more dresses with tights and boots - I live in jeans!

PostMenWithACat · 08/08/2021 21:58

Hoping to enjoy summer for a while yet but this weekend I have ordered:

Snag tights
Dress from Toast
Morland slippers
Primroses and winter pansies
Dug up pounds of potatoes
Checked the applewood supplies from last years tree that we had to fell
Looking forward to roast pork and bramley apple sauce
Baked apples
Bonfire night
New boots
The dc starting work/going back to uni
The new term, hopefully with no lockdowns
Seeing the lights along the drive as I get home and the house lit up

GromblesofGrimbledon · 08/08/2021 21:58

Autumn is truly the best time of year. I never get sick of kitschy threads like this.

Every year we pick brambles and make crumble 🥧
My Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser starts to get used again ☕️
Light up the wood burner and some beeswax candles 🕯
Pumpkin picking and carving 🎃
Walks in parks and forests with nuts for the squirrels 🥜 🐿
It's the time of the year to buy new socks 🧦

I'm away to read everyone else's posts now 🍂🍁

I love autumn, I really do but I feel ripped off that I haven't had enough summer yet. It's been mostly wet here and when we did have a warm spell I was at work.

Me too. I'm feeling very hard done by!

I have spent a lot of this weekend planning my autumn wardrobe as I bought a few bits the other day. I bought a new sewing machine recently so that might spur an autumn/winter project. I also have lots of books to catch up on.

But pleeeeeease can summer have a last hurrah first.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/08/2021 22:09

Yes, we definitely need some summer first. It's been in short supply.

Re: socks - I discovered Seasalt knee highs last winter: so cosy!

Definitely blackberry crumble. They should be ready for picking in the next few weeks.

I like to have some time in fishnets and lace tights, before getting out the opaques when it's colder.

Himalayan salt lamps for a lovely cosy glow.

IHateFlies · 08/08/2021 22:15

I hope we still get some decent summer weather so we can go out and about a bit more. It makes Autumn nicer for slowing down and relaxing in.

I always eat healthier in autumn as I love soups and stews so I make plenty of those, along with crumbles and cakes using apples from our garden and blackberries from local woods.

I meet friends for walks and take a flask of hot tea or coffee. Kids get hot chocolate if they’re coming.

I’m buying new ‘loungewear’ this year as mine are worn out from wearing them to death during the pandemic.

AntiSocialDistancer · 08/08/2021 22:21

@Parentingdilemmas

Any ideas for someone who has a toddler a s is about to have a newborn? Candles will be a no, new cushions and throws may be peed on or have milk spat on them lol. Anything that can cheer me up?
Reed diffuser up high.

Look up fake autumn leaves for lovely sensory/imagination play.

Ikea has some lovely cheap knitted throws I am very fond of.

Hot chocolate maker (or coffee pod thing with hot choc capsules.) Use mine all the time with the kids, come in for a walk and a v quick lazy hot chocolate for them and a biscuit.

Posh umbrella for the pram.

AntiSocialDistancer · 08/08/2021 22:22

And brushed cotton bedding.

I insist .

BunnyRuddington · 08/08/2021 22:23

Checking the hearing is such a good idea.

Not really something fir the home but I might get a new lipstick.

Chihuahuacat · 08/08/2021 22:25

I love autumn - lots has already been mentioned but:

Lighting candles
Blankets and wood burner
Autumn movies - sleepless in Seattle, you’ve got mail, the Harry Potters (we normally do these in November as a lead up to Xmas).
Halloween
Big walks
New scarves
Tights and boots
Early morning jogs when it’s crisp and cold

Oddbutnotodd · 08/08/2021 22:25

A new cuddly dressing gown if you need to be up with a baby

snowspider · 08/08/2021 22:29

I love my magic and have ordered some trays from Emma Shipley
emmajshipley.com/products/lemur-tray-round

and I am also ordering a paddle board

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 08/08/2021 22:35

Oh this is wonderful, I love an Autumn thread! 🍁🍂🍄

I'm looking forward to blackberry picking and making apple and blackberry pies and crumbles 🥧

We always collect conkers at the same spots so I may convince my youngest to come along. The others are acting too grown up for it all these days.

I have some fabric autumn leaves that I threaded cotton through and hung up last year so I might find a spot for those again.

I have a very sweet Gisela Graham mouse holding a pumpkin and I also made some of those pumpkins from socks that Stacey Solomon made last year which are lovely. They'll make an appearance somewhere.

Oh and a nice smelly candle from
Homesense 🍁

Doyouavocado · 08/08/2021 22:36

Place-marking Wine

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 08/08/2021 22:36

And I'm definitely due some new boots!

BunnyRuddington · 08/08/2021 22:39

Lovely tray @snowspider Smile

citygirlinwellies · 09/08/2021 08:17

Some lovely ideas here! It's making me feel warm and fuzzy. Does anyone have any recommendations for cosy books set in the autumn?

Great question! I've really enjoyed this thread I would love to spend a bit of time in a book in Autumn.
yoshiblue · 09/08/2021 09:06

I love the -ber months! The back to school feeling, nights drawing in and getting cosy!

I’ll be reading through the thread for more ideas but off the top of my head...

New bullet journal starting 1st September
Making apple crumble and meals in the slow cooker
Ramping up my crochet - I have a specific Woodland blanket in Autumnal colours that is in progress but hibernating until the season turns
Definitely more reading, treat yourself to a new hardback
National Trust/woodland walks
