Ideas to make the coming autumn lovelier ( or at least a little more bearable)

Looking out at the garden this evening I can see the light is a little more golden and the shadows a little longer. Autumn is around the corner, which I normally greatly look forward to on a hot late-August drive home through France, piled high with wine, well-read and dripping with idleness. I suspect this year’s bracing camping in Wales might just be a reminder of the rain and mud to come.

Any ideas to make the coming season a little nicer? So far I’ve come up with :

Blowing my birthday John Lewis voucher on a nice candle ( Diptyque Feu de Bois) and a couple of velvet scatter cushions
A houseplant for my bathroom window
Booking some riding lessons for all of us
Embracing the darker mornings and getting up early to walk the dog. Also, joining a beginners agility group.
Regular swimming and encouraging the kids to come too
A lovely bath foam ( I like L’Occitaine almond)
Buying good pyjamas and new boots
Planning some pretty woodland walks
Planning some good autumnal food (crumbles, stews)
If possible, doing a few days extra work and booking for DD and I to go to Paris. That might be wishful thinking as my summer energy ebbs.

Any other ideas welcome! 🍂

Oh I love Autumn! Here are some Autumn things I love to do:

Blackberry picking and then baking a blackberry and apple crumble

Buying new books and nice stationary because it is back to school season

Find a walk with woodland or just some good trees

Watch Hocus Pocus or Gilmore Girls or Practical Magic

Labradabradorable · 08/08/2021 19:43

Ooh, stationary! That back to school feeling.

Our track is full of brambles and I think the berries will be ripe very soon so crumbles are a great idea.

I have prisms in my windows. I love the rainbows.
They cheer me up.

Plant up some pots of daffodil bulbs for next spring

BigGreen · 08/08/2021 19:46

What a nice thread. I'd like to declutter all the stuff that has piled up during covid. I'm also going to shampoo the rug and buy some new cushion covers and a lovely velvet blanket.

Nobloat21 · 08/08/2021 19:48

I think I'm going to work on making my living room cosier, so that we can have cosy evenings and afternoon. I usually tuck myself up in bed at 7 when it's cold and dark, but don't want to do that this year.

Costa bonfire spiced latte and Starbucks pumpkin spiced latte
Flavoured hot chocolate from Whittard
Buy a new board game
Great British Bake Off and Strictly Come Dancing!

What about a lovely autumnal wreath or display somewhere in your home

Snowdrop30 · 08/08/2021 19:51

This is such a nice idea. I'm eying up some posh cushions to make sitting on my sofa feel luxurious, rather than endlessly dull. I'm booking in (outside) coffee dates with friends so I have something to look forward to. I'm looking at paint colours for my box room/now permanent home office, because I'm going to be spending a lot of time in there, so it may as well be cheerful.

JMAngel1 · 08/08/2021 19:52

Bloody love ALL of this!

WhistlersandJugglers · 08/08/2021 19:58

I bought snag tights and I'm going to buy really good quality ankle boots and wear dresses this autumn instead of always going for jeans.
I'm tidying up the garden for the rest of August and looking around for a good Pilates class to start in September.
I'm also going to finally get a painter in to do my kitchen and living room. I rang a guy that a neighbour recommended just before lockdown but then he obviously couldn't come and now everything is so grubby that a coat of paint should really brighten the place up.

There are some great ideas here. Thank you 🙂

I’m definitely planting loads of spring bulbs too. We moved house a year and the garden is wonderful in the summer but it turns out it’s pretty barren until April.

I like the idea of an autumnal door wreath too. I will look on Etsy.

Following for all the lovely ideas!

Deereamer · 08/08/2021 20:32

Oooohhhhh this is my kind of thread Grin I’ve just ordered some snuggly socks and a new winter duvet. I like to get my slow cooker out again and go through nice autumn recipes. I might treat us to a nice new throw for our bed this year too. I love autumn. It’s my favourite time of the year.

Ricekrispie22 · 08/08/2021 20:35

Mulled cider

GigantosaurusRex · 08/08/2021 20:36

I love autumn, I really do but I feel ripped off that I haven't had enough summer yet. It's been mostly wet here and when we did have a warm spell I was at work. I can feel the change in the air though and without consciously realising I've done loads in the house this week to make ituch nicer for winter. The biggest thing is a budget revamp of the bathroom to make winter bath soaks a nicer experience.

Davros · 08/08/2021 20:38

Autumn is my favourite time of year. Buy some fireworks, switch to Guinness in the pub, plan your socks

KeyErro · 08/08/2021 20:38

Cosy blanket, some doorstop-sized books to read and nice red wine.
Love the idea of an autumn wreath too.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 08/08/2021 20:48

Fairy lights around my conservatory ready for September, and on a very practical note, don't forget to test your central heating on a cool day as we've found out our bedroom radiator isn't working and it's taken over a week to get a plumber.

BangingOn · 08/08/2021 20:51

More bamboo socks, I bought a few pairs last year and they are amazing.

Labradabradorable · 08/08/2021 21:11

Summer central heating test is an excellent idea. Our house was new to us last autumn and I couldn’t work out to get the radiator in our snug reliably warm. I forgot that until someone mentioned upthread.

lovely thread!

I have a cold Victorian flat and am a big fan of having cosy blankets on the sofa to snuggle under. Life changed when i discovered heated throws. I have just purchased a weighted blanket and love that too.

I think most of my others have already been said - but yy to candles, books, tea (beautiful new teacup?), leafy walks, new boots, cosy tights/socks, back to school stationary, Autumn TV shows (Strictly, The Apprentice), hot chocolate, bubble baths... I'm a big Autumn fan.

Parentingdilemmas · 08/08/2021 21:32

Any ideas for someone who has a toddler a s is about to have a newborn? Candles will be a no, new cushions and throws may be peed on or have milk spat on them lol. Anything that can cheer me up?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/08/2021 21:39

"Dripping with idleness" is my new favourite phrase!

Lovely thread.

Definitely new stationery, but only if everybody promises to spell it correctly. Grin

Yes to fairy lights, nice socks and boots and bubble bath.

I'm currently creating a reading snug in the box room - have got a love seat and cushions and am going to get a sheepskin rug. I plan to spend lots of time there come the Autumn.

sheepskin slippers

a bottle of port

lovely root vegetable dishes and stodgy puddings

sausages and mash

nice tea - Lapsang smells lovely and bonfire-ish so very Autumnal
