Ideas to make the coming autumn lovelier ( or at least a little more bearable)

Looking out at the garden this evening I can see the light is a little more golden and the shadows a little longer. Autumn is around the corner, which I normally greatly look forward to on a hot late-August drive home through France, piled high with wine, well-read and dripping with idleness. I suspect this year’s bracing camping in Wales might just be a reminder of the rain and mud to come.

Any ideas to make the coming season a little nicer? So far I’ve come up with :

Blowing my birthday John Lewis voucher on a nice candle ( Diptyque Feu de Bois) and a couple of velvet scatter cushions
A houseplant for my bathroom window
Booking some riding lessons for all of us
Embracing the darker mornings and getting up early to walk the dog. Also, joining a beginners agility group.
Regular swimming and encouraging the kids to come too
A lovely bath foam ( I like L’Occitaine almond)
Buying good pyjamas and new boots
Planning some pretty woodland walks
Planning some good autumnal food (crumbles, stews)
If possible, doing a few days extra work and booking for DD and I to go to Paris. That might be wishful thinking as my summer energy ebbs.

Any other ideas welcome! 🍂

I hate autumn/winter for the most part, but agree that one of the things I do like is the reflections of lights on damp pavements etc.

Not finished yet, but it’s the reason I chose this paint by numbers (channeling my inner child!)

Tacky? 😭

covetingthepreciousthings · 28/08/2021 20:09

Can we have suggestions for autumn movies please?

Hocus Pocus is my ultimate favourite, but feel I should branch out.. is Halloweentown any good? I've never watched it but not sure where it would be available in the U.K.?

lachy · 28/08/2021 20:14

Placemarking. I want to snuggle up under a blanket and read this lovely thread.🍁🍂🎃🎆✨

HereticFanjo · 29/08/2021 01:14

Love this thread, marking place while I have a think!

reprehensibleme · 29/08/2021 08:10

Coveting - 'Practical Magic' and 'Little Women'? 'Miss Potter' isn't the best film ever made but the Lake District looks lovely.
'Withnail and I' Grin

Anything set in New England

First of the autumn purchases. May have to go for the Velvetiser sooner than I anticipated as the Tassimo has just clapped out.

I can't do much with my house decor wise as my colour scheme is very pop arty so it doesn't lend itself to autumnal greens, browns and oranges.

The fur throws never went away this summer though...

This might be my favourite thread on here!

I like the summer and the light evenings but nothing beats the coziness of autumn!

I treated myself to some new moisturiser for the dryness that happens over the colder weather and do a weekly face mask to help keep my skin hydrated!
I always stock up on the cinnamon candle from Home Bargains but this year TK Maxx/Homesense have some wonderful Halloween / autumnal candles.

I'm yet to get myself a pumpkin spice latter but hopeful that costa bring out the bombay latte again. Or the hot apple drink (it's been amazing the last few years!)

Just ordered the Xmas pjs for DS and apparently home bargains have their Halloween things in today.

Can't wait for the following:

  • making the Xmas cake
  • autumn walks and hearing the crisp leaves underfoot
  • getting home and warming up with hot chocolate and a hot bath with lovely bubble bath (I keep the bubble bath separate to my families toiletries because I'm the only one that will splash out on a "nice" smelling bath soak Blush)
  • the dark morning and nights, seeing the sunrise on my way into work as I cross the Tyne bridge (Newcastle)
  • the "change" in the air and sense of renewal that this will be the best season yet
  • sitting in a coffee shop with my family and being grateful for everything we have
  • the Xmas things slowly coming into the shops (sorry Grin)
  • warm boots, new coat and scarfs
  • changing from my summer gel nails to warm autumn colours
  • loungewear!! - I refuse to wear leggings anymore, I'm all about the snuggly loungewear and joggers
  • cosy knits and snuggly blankets

My DS has just turned 3 and I can't wait to take him on a woodland walk to collect leaves and twigs and make autumn pictures ☺️

WitchBaby · 29/08/2021 12:05

Ahh 3 is a lovely age, mine are teens now and I miss those days. I still get the woodland walks with them but it's more grunting now rather than the excitement of jumping in muddy puddles and collecting leaves.

Film wise we watch all the Harry Potters in the autumn. They are all a bit dark and wintery.

lucysmam · 29/08/2021 13:10

This is such a lovely thread; I've just whiled away an hour or so reading it with a coffee 😊

I'm feeling quite inspired now to find the small string of fairy lights I bought but never put out, & crochet some autumn decorations for the fireplace.

I'm going to get out the blankets for a wash this week; it's definitely feeling autumnal here today, & look for some warming soup recipes.

My family laugh at me but I love cosy bed socks & am in the process of making myself some in bright colours, I might look for some more autumnal yarn for a pair as well 🧦

Just going to leave this here...

I've just treated myself to this matching loungewear set. It's very soft and cosy feeling, I know Autumn shouldn't be about buying things but I rarely buy clothes. Hoping they wash well.

reprehensibleme · 29/08/2021 17:48

Lucysmam, this is pretty

This is lovely - very autumny colours - see also the dahlia blanket, I made one last year and it is very fine indeed.

lucysmam · 29/08/2021 18:22

@reprehensibleme that's the sort of thing! I have some autumn colours of cotton that'll make those nicely I think :)

Dd1 reminded me earlier about my gold stag candle holders too. They usually come out for autumn. & I'll swap my pictures around so the gold/bronze ones are on the fire place rather than the sparkly silver ones and pink candle holders.

JayDot500 · 29/08/2021 18:37

@MintyCedric Baileys understood the assignment. I need to get three a bottle!!! Shock

bertdynamite · 29/08/2021 18:47

I made the Attic24 Autumn garland last year and I'm counting down the days till I can get it out again! Obviously now I want some Autumn fairy lights to go with it.

citygirlinwellies · 29/08/2021 18:48

Film-wise Dead Poets Society is a nice autumn watch.

mbosnz · 29/08/2021 18:52

Spring cleaning never happened in this manor this year, but I am now autumn cleaning, and I think it could become a permanent thing. Freshening up and clearing out, ready for snuggying on down and Christmas!

dementedma · 29/08/2021 18:56

Planted bulbs..always a soothing pasttime like burying treasure.
Got new batteries for the fairy lights in the summer house.
Going to line the curtains in the front room as its always cold in there.
Finally getting new radiators which we've needed for years.
Deadheading plants, clearing the old growth in the garden.

evtheria · 29/08/2021 19:56

@covetingthepreciousthings
It ends in Spring/Summer but the film You’ve Got Mail really gets me excited for autumn. “Bouquets of sharpened pencils” 💗
