Will I regret an emperor sized bed?

We need a new bed. We currently have a king sized bed, so no matter what, we're going up to super king. But, I've hankered after an emperor sized bed for years.

We're going to order in the next week. DH is having a wobble about the emperor size because, well, I'm not sure! He seems to think it's excessive. I've always had a problem relaxing and I've finally learned to relax, because DH has put me a TV in the bedroom (birthday present, probably the very best one, ever!) And I've put my crotchet stuff next to my bed, so I can come upstairs and watch and crotchet. It's heaven.

So now it's time to upgrade the bed. I have a new job, it's quite full on, so I'm thinking, just go for it. We can afford it, we'll love it and it'll be a 10 year investment.

It also means, if we go for the super king and I'd wished we'd gone for an emperor, it'll be another 10 years before I can upgrade again.

We have the room for it.

I honestly don’t think many people get a super king and regret not going bigger….
Sorry but emperor seems excessive and ostentatious to me.
What if your circumstances change and you have to move house in future?

MiladyBerserko · 08/08/2021 21:54

Lol @ Ostentatious. Why? Would those with a double bed think a SK is?

OhGiveUp · 08/08/2021 23:37

@NautaOcts It's not at all. Why be all squashed when you don't have to be?
I don't understand why anyone would to sleep in a smaller bed.
I'm not intending to move anywhere where I can't fit my bed in, why would I?

I've now got bed envy.

For a fixed budget, a bigger mattress means a less high-end one. That is what you might regret I think.

We have a SK bed with a mattress each & a duvet each.

I thought that was the point of a SK-no sharing!

We have an Emperor and I love it. We can fit me, DH, both kids and the cat in it easily.

My only niggle is that it's quite tricky to get nice bedding to fit. We aren't in the UK but I really struggle to find duvet covers in particular (fitted sheets not such an issue for some reason) It's usually just a case of walking into Debenhams and asking 'what do you have for an Emperor' and then choosing which design I hate the least out of the 3 they have in stock.

The only other downside we found was that it was too high to attach a Snuzpod to but that may not be an issue!

@PrimeraVez My issue was the opposite when I moved to the UK, as they have rectangular pillows and pillowslips as opposed to the large square ones of home, so I used to buy my bedding when visiting family until I needed new pillows....now I have UK pillows and slips, but I still use my large square one when I go to bed.

I have an emperor bed, my kids fit in it too. I LOVE the size. It has a secret safe and headboards aren't expensive as they are quite rare.

Re changing big duvet covers on your own, if you get a set of those super sized plastic clothes pegs - the ones they sell for stopping beach towels blowing away - it’s relatively manageable. Fasten 2 bottom corners of duvet in cover with 2 pegs, repeat with top 2, give a good shake, sorted.
I found some on Amazon, only £3 or 4.

superplumb · 04/09/2023 18:30

When you say it will fit, how much room is left? There's a difference between getting it in the room and it looking good.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love one but if you don't have lots of room left over it could look ridiculous.

I stayed in a hotel with one but the room was the size of my downstairs living space. Best night sleep ever though.

RedCarBlueCar123 · 04/11/2023 22:58

Those of you lucky enough to have an emperor bed, how big are your bedrooms? I definitely want one, but worry it’ll be too big for the bedroom. It measures 366cm by 396cm so roughly over half of the room will be taken up by the bed!

I have a superking and in my opinion there is no such thing as a bed being too large. Go for it.

I too have a superking. If I had space, I would go bigger.
