Will I regret an emperor sized bed?

We need a new bed. We currently have a king sized bed, so no matter what, we're going up to super king. But, I've hankered after an emperor sized bed for years.

We're going to order in the next week. DH is having a wobble about the emperor size because, well, I'm not sure! He seems to think it's excessive. I've always had a problem relaxing and I've finally learned to relax, because DH has put me a TV in the bedroom (birthday present, probably the very best one, ever!) And I've put my crotchet stuff next to my bed, so I can come upstairs and watch and crotchet. It's heaven.

So now it's time to upgrade the bed. I have a new job, it's quite full on, so I'm thinking, just go for it. We can afford it, we'll love it and it'll be a 10 year investment.

It also means, if we go for the super king and I'd wished we'd gone for an emperor, it'll be another 10 years before I can upgrade again.

We have the room for it.

Will you be able to get it up the stairs? I had to remove my bannisters to get my bed up!

SynchroSwimmer · 08/08/2021 13:42

Or 2double beds, flush, side by side? (Is what I did)
Orthpaedic mattress one side/ memory foam the other.
Heavy wool duvet one side / silk lightweight on the other

LadyEloise1 · 08/08/2021 14:07

That's 9 feet wide of luxury bedness, wow SynchroSwimmer !

As for changing a huge duvet cover, look up the Burrito method on You Tube. It works a treat.

I tried that and just ended up with a very tangled king-size duvet cover Grin.

I use the roll up, fit corners, shake down method and find clothes pegging the corners is the way to go if I'm doing it single-handed.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/08/2021 14:12

I have a super king , yeah I'd probably go bigger if we had the space. We have 2 single duvets and a big bedspread over it during the day. Love it Smile

I've now fallen down a giant beds internet rabbit hole!

Will I regret an emperor sized bed?
RandomMess · 08/08/2021 14:15

Go the whole hog and have separate bedrooms it's bliss 🤣

NameChangeHelpWithBullies · 08/08/2021 14:17

Before reading the replies I couldn’t even imagine why you wouldn’t go for the emperor if you want it, it fits and you can afford it. For me it would be a no brainer, particularly because I am tall, DP is tall and also a light sleeper who sleeps better with lots of space so we don’t disturb each other. An emperor would be heaven!

aiwblam · 08/08/2021 14:18

I have a superking. Would love an emperor - more room for the dog with us!

3luckystars · 08/08/2021 14:20

As mush as I love my bed, (I even have a song about it) I would worry that it would be like putting fish into a pond, that I would grow bigger to fit the bed, so it’s a no from me. I was much thinner when I slept in a single bed so that’s all the proof I need.

Farevalah · 08/08/2021 14:21

Have you looked at the big bed company op? As well as doing emperor size they do caesar size which is 8ft wide, I would love that but sadly we have to slum it in a super king 😂

BeenThruMoreThanALilBit · 08/08/2021 14:21

My washing machine couldn’t fit the duvet cover for an emporer, or probably even more than the sheet and 2 pillowcases. I mean, they’d fit inside but they wouldn’t get clean in there

Bloodybridget · 08/08/2021 14:21

But suppose you moved house and had a smaller bedroom? I would need to make sure I had enough space for bedside tables and something to put discarded clothes on, at least, even if I didn't need a wardrobe or chest of drawers in the room. And then to be able to move around without walking into things.

DonLewis · 08/08/2021 14:24

No moving being planned, in fact, the opposite: an extension!

@RandomMess, I'm angling for separate bathrooms, not sure DH would be happy with separate bedrooms, although, I did say, it could be fun...I could hang a yellow ribbon on the door knob when he was allowed in...

A superking is only a single mattress each.

I'd have a double each if possible.

Suzi888 · 08/08/2021 14:31

We have super king and I want bigger! The only downside is changing the bedding, it’s hard workGrin especially in the heat!

SquirryTheSquirrel · 08/08/2021 14:33

If you did unexpectedly have to move to a smaller house, you'd just have to sell the bed, or you could prioritise a big bedroom above all else. I often see small townhouses where the living areas are very compact but the whole of the 'attic' floor is given over to the master bedroom.

marmitecake · 08/08/2021 14:36

I just wanted to say that there are other considerations with regards to a very large bed including, but not limited to, the size of the room it will go in. You need to make absolutely sure that when it is delivered that the mattress can be delivered to your bedroom easily. Bed usually ok as it comes in pieces. The stair well is a big problem in a lot of houses according to Dreams! Most houses will just take a double or king but we bought a super king size last year and had to order a zip and link, so two mattresses, as one super-king mattress would not fit through the gap to the stairs without bending which can cause damage. We have a standard 3 bed semi.

MiladyBerserko · 08/08/2021 14:37

Do it.

The only problem is that you will never be happy in a standard double hotel room ever again.

The White Company do lovely duvet sets.

HyacynthBucket · 08/08/2021 15:47

I'd have the biggest bed possible. For bedclothes, what about having two single or double duvets, and dressing the bed with a throw over them. Might make bedmaking easier.

StMarysKettle · 08/08/2021 15:51

We have a super king, best thing ever. It barely fits in our room though.

Changing super king duvets is easy - lay the quilt out so the strips are horizontal rather than vertical and everything goes in so much better. Turn the cover inside out, put your arms in and grab the top corners, grab the quilt corners and shake it in, turning the quilt cover the right way our as you do. Takes seconds! Use quilt clips if you need to.

Kithic · 08/08/2021 16:11

i googled to see how the size is

Superking is great

Howmanysleepsnow · 08/08/2021 17:28

Do you fight over the duvet? We do, so have an emperor duvet on a super king bed, as the only way to ensure there’s enough to go round is to up size the duvet.
If you do, I’d go super king with an emperor duvet. If you don’t, sod it and go big! Treat yourself!

MenaiMna · 08/08/2021 17:29

It's only 20cm wider than a SK is it worth it? Why don't you have a weekend rest in a couple of nice hotels one sk, one emperor? I'm tall and wide and DH is extra tall and SK is enough for us. I can change the sheets but have to get the cleaner to do the duvet...it's too much! My friends have SK with a single duvet each which seems a good idea. The indulgence if I were you would be a really good (maybe bespoke?) bedside table for your knitting + everything else.
