Will I regret an emperor sized bed?

We need a new bed. We currently have a king sized bed, so no matter what, we're going up to super king. But, I've hankered after an emperor sized bed for years.

We're going to order in the next week. DH is having a wobble about the emperor size because, well, I'm not sure! He seems to think it's excessive. I've always had a problem relaxing and I've finally learned to relax, because DH has put me a TV in the bedroom (birthday present, probably the very best one, ever!) And I've put my crotchet stuff next to my bed, so I can come upstairs and watch and crotchet. It's heaven.

So now it's time to upgrade the bed. I have a new job, it's quite full on, so I'm thinking, just go for it. We can afford it, we'll love it and it'll be a 10 year investment.

It also means, if we go for the super king and I'd wished we'd gone for an emperor, it'll be another 10 years before I can upgrade again.

We have the room for it.

If it fits, get it. What else do you need space for in a bedroom?

MrsCatE · 08/08/2021 11:38

Bleedin’ ‘ell! I thoughts waterbeds had gone the way of the Dodo! Only time I slept on one I felt seasick. Do you have to heat?

Only thing I would suggest is getting, separate single Duvets - changing a Superking sized Duvet is a challenge; an emperor sized one could be an Olympic sport!

Off tangent but vaguely remember seeing Bonaparte’s bed (being dragged around a museum as ungrateful urchin) and it was teeny! Not the Campaign one either.

EatingAllThePies · 08/08/2021 11:38

I have superking for the last 2 beds and love it. As others say pillows look a bit lost and bigger than king never looks properly dressed to me but that's not something I really care about! I wouldn't go bigger because I like this size and the range of bedding (tk Maxx always has superking bargains) but if you are happy with plain white then I say go for it, we only ever have the same set on ours and have 1 spare so I think if you can get hold of 2 sets now they will be fine.

I echo what others say though about changing bedding, I can't do it alone so it is the only downside to superking and i assume larger!

SquirryTheSquirrel · 08/08/2021 11:43

Just to say, I'd go with three bedding sets to start with.

One on, one in the cupboard, one in the wash.

Avoids being stuck if you need to change the bedding unexpectedly.

leli · 08/08/2021 11:53

No. You won't regret it.

Thelikelylass · 08/08/2021 11:56

Go Large! No such thing as too big a bed, I bought a supering size just for me and the occasional lover. I feel it is still too small when someone else is in it (I like a lot of space!)

GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine · 08/08/2021 11:56

Gosh I'd love to have the space for one of these. Thinking about it I probably do, but then I'd have no space to get into or out of the bed. Ha, I'll stick to my double for now.

You will 100% not regret it. I think a lot of people underestimate the importance of a good bed.

GOODCAT · 08/08/2021 11:58

Definitely, definitely go for it. Slept in one once over 20 years ago in a hotel and still remember it. Absolutely loved it. There is no way you will regret it.

We only have a king and menopause wise it doesn't work for me. Might just about cope with being in the same bed for longer if we had a lot more room.

MyGrassIsBrowner · 08/08/2021 12:02

I once viewed a house that had an emperor bed in it, the bedroom was as bigger than the floor space of the whole downstairs of my current house now. Have you seen them in r/l? They are frigging huge 🤣 but I was admittedly super envious, can see them being an utter pain to change the covers though. If you've got the room, then by all means go for it!

Lysianthus · 08/08/2021 12:06

@LadyEloise1

If it fits, you can afford it, it won't be a problem getting bed linen and your dh will change the duvet then go for it. Lucky you. We have a superking size and it's lovely. We use two single duvets which are hidden under a beautiful white cotton throw.
Second the individual duvets. And easy to change covers too.
Peanutsandchilli · 08/08/2021 12:12

Fuck it, go for a super Caesar. You can never have enough space in bed imo.

OldTinHat · 08/08/2021 12:12

An emperor bed? Is that a thing?! I had a super king way back when I was still with exH and my sons were tiny. With all four of us we still had room for most of our neighbours! (No, that absolsutely did not happen btw!!) I have a king now, just for me! I would worry about getting bed linen though, it was difficult enough for the super.

OldTinHat · 08/08/2021 12:13

Wtf is a Super Caesar??!! *heads off to google...

AGameOfCrones · 08/08/2021 12:14

I don’t understand why you wouldn’t get the biggest bed you possibly can, especially if you’re sharing it with another fully grown human?

TSSDNCOP · 08/08/2021 12:14

No no no. Getting the duvet cover on would take days.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 08/08/2021 12:14

I'd get two king size coverless duvets then you won't have to exhaust yourself putting on massive duvet covers.
I'd have an emporer to myself if my house was big enough!!
I have a king all to myself Grin

Boood · 08/08/2021 12:15

I have to psyche myself up to change the bedding on a king size, nothing on earth would make me want bigger.

AGameOfCrones · 08/08/2021 12:15

I’ve just bought a king size bed all for myself 😁

Notaroadrunner · 08/08/2021 12:21

Get the emperor. I'm so jealous that you would be able to fit it in. We'd probably just about manage a super king. I'd also choose separate duvets as opposed to one emperor sized one.

OhGiveUp · 08/08/2021 12:23

I've had an emperor bed all my life op, even as a child as they're normal in mainland Europe.
I wouldn't have any other size.
I remember the first time I came to the UK to meet my p.i.l and we were staying at their home.
Not only was a aghast that two people had to share a normal sized double bed, but also had to share a duvet 😱
Another reason to love them is that you get your own bedding.

MorrisZapp · 08/08/2021 12:28

When my parents married, my gran said 'get a bed big enough for you both to be ill in at the same time' :)

We've got a super king and it's a bit of a pain. The bedding is a pain in the arse and once two adults are fully stretched out, the extra inches seem superfluous. I feel the same about huge hotel rooms! Why do I need ten feet of empty carpet? :)

But if you like huge beds and have the space, please your own needs.

UserNameNameNameUser · 08/08/2021 12:28

Go for it!

We sized up from a king to a super king. It took a lot of persuasion from me. It felt huge at first but I would still love to have a bigger bed. We’re building a new house, so I have made sure that the new bedroom is big enough for an emperor Grin

My only problem is that DH insists on the duvet being “tucked in” or he can’t sleep, whereas I pile everything up like a nest. Not sure what my solution is going to be there.

ShowMeHow · 08/08/2021 12:30

Oh my well to answer your thread title

No I do not think you will ever regret it, assuming you can still have enough space in the room for normal use.

We have one and it’s a 4 poster we picked up from EBAY for a song. Every day it is a bit of decadence that makes me smile even though I thought it was outrageous when we surprisingly won the speculative bid.

Bedding and a new mattress of the right size hasn’t been a problem.

MrsKDB · 08/08/2021 12:33

We have an emperor and I’ve never regretted it. Zip and link mattress, bedding from the white company or king of cotton. We have two sets and don’t need any more than that. Changing the duvet is easy. I cannot bear small beds.
