Will I regret an emperor sized bed?

We need a new bed. We currently have a king sized bed, so no matter what, we're going up to super king. But, I've hankered after an emperor sized bed for years.

We're going to order in the next week. DH is having a wobble about the emperor size because, well, I'm not sure! He seems to think it's excessive. I've always had a problem relaxing and I've finally learned to relax, because DH has put me a TV in the bedroom (birthday present, probably the very best one, ever!) And I've put my crotchet stuff next to my bed, so I can come upstairs and watch and crotchet. It's heaven.

So now it's time to upgrade the bed. I have a new job, it's quite full on, so I'm thinking, just go for it. We can afford it, we'll love it and it'll be a 10 year investment.

It also means, if we go for the super king and I'd wished we'd gone for an emperor, it'll be another 10 years before I can upgrade again.

We have the room for it.

I read this as an emperor sized beard, which sounded pretty cool. A bed though, gosh. I've literally never heard of an emperor sized bed.

DotDotDotDot · 08/08/2021 12:35

A bed can never be too big. Go for it.

I'd suggest a zip and link, so you each have your own mattress (minimises being disturbed by the other person fidgeting) and two single quilts rather than one big one.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/08/2021 12:37

Do it.

It depends on your room size! We have a king size and it's plenty big enough for us despite us not being skinny (massive understatement) a superking would simply not fit very well, I need storage more than a wider bed! Anyway beds are for cuddling inGrin

ChickenDinnerChecky · 08/08/2021 12:39

Yeah do it, my super king bed is my favourite thing, if I’d know there was a bigger one when we bought it I would have got the bigger one!

Defiantly41 · 08/08/2021 12:42

I'd say go for the biggest you can fit in. The idea of marking up with masking tape is a great idea!

A word of warning if you're not going for zip and link is to think carefully about actually getting the mattress up the stairs. Our super king was a massive struggle with 5 men because our stairs is not a straight run, so we will be going zip and link for a replacement mattress

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/08/2021 12:46

Husband and I have just had this discussion. We settled on super king purely because I like to buy seasonal bed linen and bargains from tkmaxx so I’d be missing out if we went emperor!

OhGiveUp · 08/08/2021 12:56

To add, I don't have zip and link mattresses, just 2 separate ones with separate sheets and duvets.

RedRosie · 08/08/2021 12:57

I think someone may have mentioned this upthread ...

Get whatever bed makes you happy.

But get two duvets (we have two doubles on a king size bed, but if we had a double bed I'd do two single duvets etc). Get all matching bedclothes etc. It's marvellous! So much better.

PeonyTime · 08/08/2021 13:01

If it fits the room, you wont regret it.
I have no idea what size it was. We had a bed in a rental (abroad if it matters) that was wider than it was long. We had 3 pillows across the top (so I'm guessing 225cm?). Seperate duvets so changing them wasnt an issue. Sheets provided by the landlord, so we just used them.
It was awesome. I could just roll over into the cold middle whenever I wanted (DH likes pre warmed beds I like cold beds)
The only issue is sleeping in a standard double comes as a shock when you stay somewhere else!

Wharehina · 08/08/2021 13:02

We have one, and it’s fab. We have two separate king-size duvets, too, because I baulked at the price of buying a new emporer sized duvet, and I’m so glad we did that.

Chachachawoo · 08/08/2021 13:03

We've always had super king. I am quite small but dH is tall and big.
If my room was big enough I would get an emperor for sure. It's a bit of extra luxury every night.

actiongirl1978 · 08/08/2021 13:04

We have an emperor sleigh bed from 'and so to bed' and it's the best money I've ever spent.

I hate being near DH in the night so we go to opposite sides and sleep v well.

actiongirl1978 · 08/08/2021 13:05

Oh and I wouldn't bother with zip line next time, I'd just buy two single mattresses of the same depth.

actiongirl1978 · 08/08/2021 13:06

We never use the middle. If we DTD we go to one side or the other.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 08/08/2021 13:08

We have a super king but have an emperor duvet so it hangs over the edge a bit and keeps my bum covered-no matter how big the bed it still gravitate to the edge!

crimsonlake · 08/08/2021 13:15

Exactly how big is your bedroom, are you still left with plenty of floor space or would it be a squeeze?

Antinerak · 08/08/2021 13:16

We actually downsized from an emperor to a super king but are now looking for an emperor again. Emperor is lovely but a super king works just as well. I do like having the emperor duvet on the SK bed though, it's lovely in winter to have plenty of duvet! My husband is 6'5 and built like a brick house so appreciates the extra space.

The only issue is the larger duvets are very heavy, so you may wish to consider having 2. You can cover the 2 with a large throw or blanket if you worry that it'll look strange.

I just looked up how big an emperor bed was, so for anyone else here are the measurements.

Christinayangtwistedsister · 08/08/2021 13:23

I want one now

BluebellsGreenbells · 08/08/2021 13:23

You spend 1/3 of your life in bed … make it count!

yourstroobly · 08/08/2021 13:23

I have an emperor (in storage) and it's amazing. We had to move house though and it didn't fit in the new one. Hoping to move again soon to get my emperor out, love love it!

DonLewis · 08/08/2021 13:25

Ok, well, to answer a few questions. I actually really wanted the Cesar, but, until we extend, it wouldn't fit. Well it would, but it'd be silly. And the jump in the price is ginormous. I feel like I sound like a spilt brat, but to me, the emperor was already a compromise.

I don't think my husband recognises me! I've never been like this about anything! TVs? Why spend thousands on one? Cars? No, no, no need to spend shit loads...that'll do. Etc.

Although, I do have form for super sized furniture. We have a massive sofa. And we're finally in a position to not have to buy the cheapest of everything and when I took this new job, I had 2 priorities. One was to pay off the credit card. Done. The other was to replace things that need replacing with the best version we can afford. I've never really chosen anything. Crockery? The cheap sets from IKEA. Lamps? Cheap and cheerful, etc etc. So this is our first upgrade and I'm determined to stick to my promise to myself to buy the best we can afford.

Interestingly, I think we'll have 2 separate duvets. We already have half and half duvets so DH can have a lower tog. And this thread has made me realise that the duvet is probably the only down side.

Thanks all. Well be ordering it in the week! Yay.

We have a super king but have found that super king duvets aren’t quite wide enough, I mean it is wider than the mattress but only slightly so we have super king and fitted sheet then an emperor duvet and cover. It’s much harder to buy the emperor size but we found The Secret Linen Company a wonderful source.

As for changing a huge duvet cover, look up the Burrito method on You Tube. It works a treat.

NotMyCat · 08/08/2021 13:30

I don't think you would regret it, I have a super king to myself!
