Has MN changed?

Do you think MN had changed since you joined? How did it used to be?

I have been here several years. A few years back it seemed quite nasty In places .but it seems better now. Does not seem to be so many attacks on posters or bun fights . Seems to be better debates without it getting overly nasty.

OP posts:

Weren't they "quiches" not "cliques"? Or am I missing that up with another site?

Tinpotspectator · 08/08/2021 00:04

One of the changes I hate the most is the tendency for government hangers on to start threads to "trail" ideas and policy options, whilst pretending to be ordinary posters. It's so obvious, too.

yup quiches. another immortalised typo

Are there any group threads going still? Not the Buses, but things like the Nobdies and wolefs?

SaSamhradh · 08/08/2021 00:15

I'm here about 12yrs. Mostly there's great wisdom, I love the relationship threads.
Sometimes it's a bit daft, and I wonder if it's cultural, but yes, every thing changes over 10yrs.

Too many anti vax threads
Saisong · 08/08/2021 00:43

I've been here too long, and keep trying to leave - it's like Hotel California!

It's nice to know that so many old timers are in the same boat. I do feel nostalgic for the days when meet ups were a thing - I shared a train home with Pagwatch once, just ever so slightly star struck. The BLW spin-off was a big thing for me at the time - think it's died a death now (my weaners just raid the fridge and grunt these days). Was about the same time as 'wnaky baskets' - another MN typo (yes I made one).

echt · 08/08/2021 01:17

Been here since 2006.

A marked increase in dumbass, googleable enquiries.
Lots of stuff in AIBU which in the past would be Relationships. And I'd rather it was.
Right-wing trolls, particularly in Covid times.

Not RTFT, but does anyone remember the poster who lived in Paris?

JaneJeffer · 08/08/2021 01:25

Yes

Twoforthree · 08/08/2021 01:25

I enjoyed the diverse opinions but it seems to me that people are now arguing even more extreme views just to be goady.

Genuine dilemmas are fewer and far between as people are more conscious of being outed, as the site has grown. I wouldn’t post anything personal as I’m too afraid of being recognised. Even with a name change, I wouldn’t want a situation being recognised. This makes the site more boring.

It’s not what it was,

But at the same time the policy has been posted else where and then brought to mumnet for various people's perspectives, and besides most people want democracy and to be a part of the political process, then yea,
Classica · 08/08/2021 01:57

Was her name Bonsoir? She had a good line in being supercilious. Anyone who lived outside of the very best arrondissement (everyone) was seen to be lacking! Grin

Arsebucket · 08/08/2021 02:53

Thread killers threads.

what happened to those?

milkyaqua · 08/08/2021 02:55

It used to be very witty, and intelligent.

Then there was a phase where there used to be so many swear words in the AIBU titles it made even me, who swears like a trooper, uneasy.

Then a whole bunch of people who signed off their posts with 'x' appeared, and things got duller.

Then Covid happened and it became really boring.

Now it is boring, and incredibly aggressive, and many people seem incapable of reading a single phrase as it is written, let alone a full sentence. It would be a lucky day, also, when even 10% of respondents to an AIBU had read the thread title correctly, or actually read the OP's first post. God forbid they availed themselves of the see-all function.

It doesn't matter how anodyne a response is, lately. They pluck words at random, place them together is some order that is entirely made up in their own heads, and then post the equivalent of a full round with an AK-47. When their error is pointed out, their heads spin around 360 degrees as they spew venom and bile like Linda Blair in the Exorcist.

It is deeply un-fun, these days.

Anordinarymum · 08/08/2021 03:00

I've been a regular poster for a short while and enjoy reading the helpful stuff, and have been helped a lot.
If I have a problem regarding anything legal I have had good advice, and also things beauty related.
I enjoy the relationship stuff.
I wish there was a bit more fun and less of the ganging up on some threads but that is par for the course on most internet forums I suppose.

What was her name? I can remember the style of her posts so vividly.
echt · 08/08/2021 03:36

Bonsoir, that's the one.

Classica · 08/08/2021 03:36

Been here for a looong time, but not constantly.

For me, i think nowadays the trolling is endless.

Sometimes I will report and troll hunt deliberately, to try to stop people posting about their children's privates etc.

Some of the trolls lately have absolutely shameful morals in what they post about.

Oblomov21 · 08/08/2021 06:21

It has changed a lot. Some of the big events listed above have changed it dramatically. Mostly for the better, but many for the worse.

I feel differently about it recently.

FlorallyBankrupt · 08/08/2021 06:30

I've been here since 2014, so post-penis beaker. There are plenty of names I recognise hope to avoid rousing but I name change every few weeks or so and would never risk posting anything controversial in fear of a good virtual kicking from the warriors. Although you can get your arse handed to you when people insist on twisting what you've said and spew it back to you as fact.

I like MN for entertainment value and I've had great feedback on practical things (health, beauty, legal etc). I've learned a lot about feminism and there are still plenty of funny threads.

But generally speaking the place is batshit and best not taken seriously. Imagine if everyone lived their lives by MN (or any SM) standards? Fuck that.

paintedpanda · 08/08/2021 07:38

Been here since around 2010/11 but dipping in and out, a couple of name changes. I have a couple of people on FB that I met on here.

I've found recently that threads tend to go one way. One person says something and then almost everyone else says the same thing, only a handful going against the grain. It often feels like a massive pile on, sometimes completely unnecessary.

MN used to be a friendly place. I got some very good advice when DD was younger and it didn't matter that I was young and stupid because people were kind.

TheRealHousewife · 08/08/2021 08:53

For those who say their children are all grown up have you thought of joining Gransnet 😬 Actually people are really quite polite and friendly over there. Not as political either imho.

Bryonyshcmyony · 08/08/2021 08:57

I've been here ten years. The trolling has got much worse, so many made up threads that are very obvious and tedious. The aggression on AIBU can be horrendous, and there are far fewer really funny threads these days. It's deteriorated since that stupid penis beaker thread attracted lots of attention a while back

Agree with this.
