Has MN changed?

Hichic · 07/08/2021 20:12

Do you think MN had changed since you joined? How did it used to be?

I have been here several years. A few years back it seemed quite nasty In places .but it seems better now. Does not seem to be so many attacks on posters or bun fights . Seems to be better debates without it getting overly nasty.

Yes @ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba, I miss Zombie. She was lovely Sad

@Geamhradh I cross posted with you and agree with everything you said.

LaurieFairyCake · 07/08/2021 20:35

I think there's less nuance - which of course reflects the polarisation of opinion in the world

Fear causes polarisation

LeavesOffTheCactus · 07/08/2021 20:35

What was the New Year’s Eve debacle?? I’m new to MN

Galassia · 07/08/2021 20:37

@Geamhradh

Spot on!

cherryadeisyummy · 07/08/2021 20:37

@TooWicked

It’s overrun with trolls, I don’t think it ever used to be this bad. I reckon on an average day 70% of threads in AIBU are trolls and most of them are bloody obvious from the first post as well.
Agree. I saw a thread earlier where a poster even said MN had deleted and blocked her account but other posters were still lapping it up. Madness.
ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/08/2021 20:38
@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba - I loved Zombie. Broke my heart when she died, after being friends with her on here for years and knowing all about her life, illness & struggles.
@iklboo
I stopped posting after that for a while.
Z & her rolling phalanx. ❤

What I used to see but don't anymore thankfully is the dreary 'oh you don't like swearing and want to use the word hubby? Well why don't you fuck off to Nethuns with their glitter tickers'. There was so much snobbish nonsense about another parenting forum which seemed to have people thinking they were the cool kids for being on here.

Hichic · 07/08/2021 20:40

@Geamhradh I wish I knew who you were talking about. I feel like I'm being teased Grin

Horseplay that a few years earlier would have had HQ joining in. That time they'd left a junior on the red button and it all got a bit snippy. I did make lots of friends elsewhere in cyberspace as a result though.
PPCD · 07/08/2021 20:41

It's less cliquey which is good but also less witty and discussions are more polarised and less tolerant of exploring differing opinions.

I miss CatThiefKeith's threads - they were always good fun.

PPCD · 07/08/2021 20:42

I think the moderating has always been a bit patchy and inconsistent.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 07/08/2021 20:43

Sorry @ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

You know me under a different name.

We are Facebook friends.

And Hayday.

Ofnorman · 07/08/2021 20:43

I think there is a lot more bollocks nowadays. I'm not talking about the long, drawn out dramas (there's always been those) but a good 70% of what I read nowadays I simply just don't believe.

There is no MN Royalty any more either- with the site getting so much bigger, even the 'known' names aren't 'revered' like they used to be.

DramaAlpaca · 07/08/2021 20:44

@LeavesOffTheCactus my recollections are a little hazy but it was one New Year's Eve a few years ago when an inexperienced member of staff was left in charge of MN on her own, trying to handle reports and keep things under control. Things got a bit giddy and frisky as they do with people having a few drinks, the mod couldn't cope and effectively shut down the site so nobody could post. Some of the queen bees got annoyed and fecked off elsewhere.

It's not a moderated site though. Maybe it's the reporting that's patchy and inconsistent?

same!!!

MirandaWest · 07/08/2021 20:47

I joined in 2004. Was a lot smaller then and no AIBU, no Sex topic etc and you felt that you knew people more. But my own use has changed as well - I had one small baby when I joined and now have two teenagers.
There were trolls and one at least (Judge Flounce) was very prolific. Now I think there are more trolls but less sophisticated possibly.
Threads didn’t use to get lifted by ie Daily Mail.
I tend to read Mumsnet more than I post and less likely to start threads.

The Queen Bees had already gone to Mouldies several Christmases before.
The people who went as a result of NYE weren't nearly as royal.

Arsebucket · 07/08/2021 20:51

2004 here. My ds was a toddler, now he’s a big, hairy man.

It used to be nice. But then the world wasn’t so cunty then. People in general are just arse holes now.

Why can’t we mention queen bees name?

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 07/08/2021 20:52

I think there are more trolls and less funny or lighthearted threads which I partly put down to covid and the lockdowns.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 07/08/2021 20:52

Messaged you

@JayAlfredPrufrock

gotcha.
more aliases than Jason Bourne

Sparklingbrook · 07/08/2021 20:55

I remember when there used to be threads that were pages long when someone found a shopping list. The excitement. Grin
But now it's all about the parking, with diagrams and pom pom waving. Zzzz.

LIZS · 07/08/2021 20:55

Since 2001? Much bigger scale, more diverse posters, more political, less personal and sense of a community. Most of early posters have naturally moved on as dc got older and lives have changed.
