Has MN changed?

Do you think MN had changed since you joined? How did it used to be?

I have been here several years. A few years back it seemed quite nasty In places .but it seems better now. Does not seem to be so many attacks on posters or bun fights . Seems to be better debates without it getting overly nasty.

I’ve been here from around 2010 I think. Moved over with a few others from YAYW when that imploded, and loved the wittiness, straight talking and good advice. I have learnt a lot over the years, had my arse handed to me on AIBU and been called a slattern Grin.

It was nice when the same names came up and you got to know people, and could remember stuff about their lives. I met up with posters I met on the gardening threads and we are still in touch.

I remember quite a few of the names mentioned on this thread, and also one amazing poster who had pet corvids, if memory serves correct.

@VenusClapTrap what did you manage to do to earn slattern? Grin

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 08/08/2021 20:57

I bet you didn't clean behind your fridge

VenusClapTrap · 08/08/2021 21:17

Hah! I’ve never cleaned behind my fridge but it wasn’t that; Dd did a poo in the bath and I left it for Dh to deal with. Blush I was pg and vomitty.

Hepzibar · 08/08/2021 21:25

@VenusClapTrap Ireckon you didn't change your bed linen daily.

FitToFly · 08/08/2021 21:32

You just know that some old timers are desperately searching to see if they have been mentioned on here.
A lot of people struggle with RL friendships and get so invested in internet ones. I don’t have the same rose tinted glasses as some on here. I like that it’s bigger here and there are not so many Queen Bees now.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 08/08/2021 21:41

@Viviennemary

I think its better without the Queen Bee folk. I didn't like the cliques and daft in jokes either.
Agree. I've been on since around 2005 (though via several different accounts, in response to the various data protection fiascos). The cliqueyness was tedious. If you disagreed with one of the queen bees about anything, the rest of her clique would gang up on you.

OTOH I do agree that the humour was sharper (in a good way). There used to be a lot more clever silliness like this recent thread. There do seem to be a lot of posters now who make a point of being humourlesss and absurdly literal.

Mis-read as 'covids' Was confused.

I despise that kind of school girl bully behaviour. Still goes on elsewhere unfortunately but I think mn are quite good at banning those posters and stamping it out.

Puddycatfan · 08/08/2021 21:59

I've been here since about 2005/6 but was under a different name for most of that time.
Threads used to be so much funnier and more interesting. I wasn't a prolific poster at all, but it did feel more friendly even when people disagreed.
I much preferred it when it was smaller, to be honest.

@Oblomov21

Sparkling when was the last Meet Up?

I went to at least 2 Christmas parties / meet ups, but that was years ago.

The last official MN bash was their anniversary one I think. The last unofficial meetup I heard about was a London one, obvs, during the time when Oddsocks was posting. She went to the meetup.
BeQuietBrenda · 09/08/2021 12:49

I've been here 11 years.

It's definitely changed, but so has the Internet generally. It was more left-leaning early days (before I joined I remember it being a big deal to the politicians to gauge "what does Mumsnet think") whereas now the racism, ageism and ableism overruns AIBU.

If I suspect a troll it usually turns up in one of the tabloids as click bait. Got to wonder if those kind of "hilarious" threads are lead by the tabloids or MNHQ to get the traffic up for the ad revenue.

I see that cliques of "quiches" have been mentioned and I actually don't see a problem with them. They usually had their own threads to witter away on. As someone said, they didn't like it when people derailed threads with cliquey chat - the Quiche threads helped with that.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/08/2021 18:29

It was SarahStratton who had Monty the Corvid.

VenusClapTrap · 09/08/2021 19:14

SarahStratton! Yes that rings a bell.

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 09/08/2021 19:17

I’ve been here since 2016 so not a super long time in comparison to other posters. AIBU can be absolutely awful, infact Chat too, some of the responses leave me Shock. It can really quickly become a pile on and i’ve seen a lot of time that the first response indicates how the thread will go.

Other than AIBU and Chat there are some really nice boards with nice people that I like to join in on, have seen lots of supports for OPs in Relationships/Bereavement boards too.
