Has MN changed?

Hichic · 07/08/2021 20:12

Do you think MN had changed since you joined? How did it used to be?

I have been here several years. A few years back it seemed quite nasty In places .but it seems better now. Does not seem to be so many attacks on posters or bun fights . Seems to be better debates without it getting overly nasty.

OhWhyNot · 07/08/2021 21:29

I think less cliquey

But other than that no

There has always been positives and negatives to MN mainly positives

VodselForDinner · 07/08/2021 21:29

Think I’ve been here since 2009-ish.

Can’t remember a queen bee. Can anyone PM me?

Also, what’s the NYE story?

LameUsernameAvailable · 07/08/2021 21:30

Too man trolls.
Mumsnet HQ don't moderate the site well enough and allow obvious troll threads. It's boring.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/08/2021 21:31

@EarringsandLipstick

I also have to say, I think the Woolly Hugs team are amazing. There for a very sad reason but what lovely kindness from everyone who organises it, supplies wool, knits. 💐
yes. 100% ❤
ChaosTrulyReigns · 07/08/2021 21:33

Showy I think mine was the toaster! But menobrain is happy to be corrected re chilly white goods.

And yes, I had the notsofucking smart phone Grin

happydays2345 · 07/08/2021 21:33

I would say it is more transphobic

Slub · 07/08/2021 21:34

Been here around 18 years and lots of name changes (especially since it got hacked) early days was a lot more fun - if a lot bit cliquey. Nowadays it's all made up click bait for the daily red tops.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 07/08/2021 21:43

@LIZS

Back in the younger days(!) of MN , Pre ads etc there was a fee. The site started as something of an echo chamber with chat, reviews, sparring between posters. The SWMNBN controversy was one watershed moment, then Moldies/MSN/Reddit, the poster who used threads for a DM column, cyber attacks, trolls have gradually eroded that early innocence. Perhaps as much a reflection of how the www has developed too.
^ This.

I have been here since 2006 and I think we had to pay £5 to CAT someone.

It felt smaller and more supportive, less boards, easier to keep up with the goings on in MNetter's lives. I have name changed a lot on this site, not that I post that often but now with newspapers scraping this site for stories all the time I don't want my user name out there. There are more vindictive posters sparring for a fight, any fight.

I know lots of posters who have been here since early days have now left, their children now adults but it is lovely to see names I recognise. I have found massive comfort, information and laughter in MN. I do hope it continues.

IAmNotAClownfish · 07/08/2021 21:44

I've been here 10 or 11 years I think and MN has gone/is going the way of the rest of the world at the moment. Polarisation, taking offence, identity politics, it's taking over everything. Just seems to be the way it goes now, both on and offline.

mistermagpie · 07/08/2021 21:45

I do like it and it's so big that it's a great resource, any question I have - whether it's about a recipe, sizing in a certain shop, the meaning of life - someone has asked it before or can answer it for you.

I am always shocked by the trolls though. I mean the proper fake story ones. I cannot get my head around it at all, some of the stories are so involved and detailed and often make the OP look 'bad' (like the ones where someone says they hate their baby or whatever), I just can't understand what they are getting out of it. I really don't think it was as bad a few years ago, or maybe I was just unaware of it?

CoronaPeroni · 07/08/2021 21:47

It changed when AIBU got established and is now the go to for crap, trolls, insults and bullying.

I don't think it's changed that much over the years, although when I joined 10 years ago there was an annoying little bunch who would deliberately try to close down discussions they didn't like, by just posting random shite to each other on the thread.

Other than that, it's still batshittery at its finest and very entertaining Grin

ShowOfHands · 07/08/2021 21:49

@ChaosTrulyReigns

I'm trying to start a clique. You have to say something veiled about it still being indisposed and I then tinkly laugh and snurk. Then somebody mentions royalty, we all fall out and everybody flounces.

It'd be so 2009.

Mydogisagentleman · 07/08/2021 21:49

I rejoined recently, I have been trying to remember when I joined, DD is 20 now and I think she was about 5 when I initially started.
I used to be kreecherlivesupstairs and was living in Switzerland.
We moved to Belgium and then Warrington.
I was fortunate enough to be invited by a woman to stay with her while I tried to find a flat for us to rent while DH started a new job in London.
I was a wolef and miss several members of the pack.
Back now for a while

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/08/2021 21:50

I haven't been posting for a while but since I got back in May I'm surprised how many AIBU threads are not AIBUs at all.
"just posting for traffic"
"don't know what my AIBU is just ranting"
"AIBU to feel xyz"

I saw one today that was just asking for help with a knitting pattern😳
such an annoying trend

DaisyWaldron · 07/08/2021 21:51

The main difference for me is that it's become an anti-trans site. If I mention Mumsnet to my friends without kids, they'll say "oh, Prosecco Storefront" and mention transphobia, whereas when I joined it was all Boden and nappies and political debate that felt less entrenched. Although the whole country felt less entrenched, to be fair.

It's bigger now, and less cliquey, and it feels less clever and witty and tasteful than it did ten years ago. I made actual friends who changed my life on a couple of threads, and I don't think that would happen in the same way now.

There's more overt racism, I think, but the covert racism is challenged a lot more.

ShowOfHands · 07/08/2021 21:52

I genuinely x-posted with Worra Grin

DaisyWaldron · 07/08/2021 21:52

Storm front. A prosecco store front would be rather nice.

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2021 21:53

Yes, it should be named BirthingPersonNet
JayAlfredPrufrock · 07/08/2021 21:55

I was excited by a Prosecco store front.

:walks of muttering:

JayAlfredPrufrock · 07/08/2021 21:55

Kreecher I remember you.

Bit of a come down from Switzerland to Warrington.

Lanique · 07/08/2021 21:55

Much much less cliquey, but that's because it's huge now. Demographic has widened massively and it's clear that a lot of the posters are much younger than me now. When I joined in 2004 (under another name) I felt like a spring chicken however I now find myself feeling very old school and Generation X.

WorraLiberty · 07/08/2021 21:55

Oh yeah, one change I really don't like is that anyone can get their thread deleted if they don't like the replies, just by pretending it's 'outing'.

That's a pile of shite.
