I bloody love him

I think he is great. I have been watching his You tube channel, he's really engaging.

The knitting is brilliant, he's got very proficient at it very quickly. GrinHe finds it calming. He can't ever sit still and he can't even make it through a film apparently. So it's a big deal to him, nobody said he was the first person to ever knit. Hmm

The relationship between his Mum and his Husband is hilarious, they all seem like a lovely close unit.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 07/08/2021 20:02

it is good for his hands and wrists, which all help with his diving

SoupDragon · 07/08/2021 20:04

He only learnt during the first lockdown too.

Stanlie · 07/08/2021 20:05

Top bloke

gvb8 · 07/08/2021 20:08

I think he's great too, he's clearly one of these people that just excel at whatever they do (not that I think he hasn't worked hard to be as good as he is!)

knittingaddict · 07/08/2021 20:13

@MissyB1

It’s not miserable to ask why the knitting was such a big deal? Love him for his achievements etc yes but knitting??? He’s not exactly the first person to ever do it! I didn’t own a single jumper or cardigan as a child that wasn’t knitted by my mum.
I think that it's good to see anyone taking care of their mental health. Knitting is taking care of yourself and that's a good thing.
FabulouslyFab · 07/08/2021 20:17

He has madewithlovebytomdaley on Instagram. His charity is The Brain Tumour Charity, for his Dad.

Zhampagne · 07/08/2021 20:20

@TheGenealogist

Agree that his skills are impressive and that he does not appear to be following a pattern. I suspect though with the cardigan that he's just knitted it all in cream, then embroidered on the detail using Swiss darning. Either way, agree it's great to see someone male and young knitting.

It is hugely therapeutic, he says it calms him. And he's smashing the stereotype that only old women knit.

That much Swiss darning would be unbelievably boring so I don’t see how it’s any less impressive than working intarsia or stranded colourwork.
Disfordarkchocolate · 07/08/2021 20:21

I think he's fab too. He also cooks. I'd love my husband to be able to knit.

Ellmau · 07/08/2021 20:23

I reckon he's got a career in knitwear after he retires from diving if he wants it.

HopeClearwater · 07/08/2021 20:25

Because men aren't generally knitters

And the minute a man is good at a traditionally female pursuit, a large number of women suddenly treat that man like a bloody genius ... it’s so boring.

Sparklingbrook · 07/08/2021 20:26

I think he'll get snapped up as a tv presenter when he retires.

He’s great, not just the knitting or diving, but such a likeable bloke.

Sparklingbrook · 07/08/2021 20:33

I don't think it's because he's a bloke that the knitting is great. it's because it's Tom Daley- Olympic gold medalist, sat poolside doing it.
You don't have to be a genius to knit-although knitting patterns are a foreign language to me and I have zero patience. Grin

Muchmorethan · 07/08/2021 20:34

Why does he have...what appears to be...clingfilm around his upper arms?

UrbanRambler · 07/08/2021 20:34

Yes, he seems like a lovely person. Also, I'm in awe at the complex and dangerous dives that he and others have performed in the Olympics. I can't get my head around what they manage to do with their (fab) bodies.
ChockysChild · 07/08/2021 20:35

I wonder what he’s going to do with what he’s knitted afterwards, I can’t image him wearing it to do his weekly food shop 😃 He could probably raise a fortune for charity by auctioning it.

I wondered that too. Wondered if it was important diving medical stuff.
blackice · 07/08/2021 20:37

I love him too

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 07/08/2021 20:37

He said that before he started knitting, he couldn’t sit still. Knitting gives him something to do with his hands, but keeps him relaxed and still. That cardigan looked tricky.

FAQs · 07/08/2021 20:39

Love that he sits knitting in between earning Olympic medals, it seems so random, helps with his anxiety and raises funds for the charity in his dad’s memory.

GeekCardigan · 07/08/2021 20:41

I’ve met Tom a couple of times and I was surprised at how completely normal and likeable he is. His mum was lovely as well - I thought she would be a typical “pushy” mum but completely the opposite. The bond between them made me tear up a little

KittenKong · 07/08/2021 20:41

Mum was an absolute perpetual motion machine.
Could not sit still for a second. Then only time she did was when she was knitting.

This.

People swooning over Tom Daley because of his knitting should probably consider whether they’d have a similar reaction if it was a woman athlete doing it.
