Eating our 10-a-day thread

Breathmiller · 30/07/2021 10:37

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

Oh goodness I've started on the mince pies and it's having bad effects on my meals!
Yesterday
1 satsuma
2 carrot
3 & 4 red bean and mixed veg stew
5 Blueberries, olives (not together!)

I felt I'd missed a meal then recalled all the pastry based things I'd eaten. What a dope.
The satsuma and raw carrot habit pulled me up to 5 which is a plus point. I've already had those today too. And the vegetables are out on the counter for later.

OtherPlans · 28/11/2021 12:07

I'll gloss over yesterday as I only managed grapes, lettuce and broccoli (then succumbed to fish and chips 😋)
Today
Blueberries
Grape juice
Later:
Lentils (with baked salmon)
Tomatoes
Various roasted mixed veg
Hummus (just making it)

So I'm aiming for at least 8 portions
My issue is getting enough variety as I can end up eating huge amounts of the same veg at one sitting which doesn't count (eg yesterday several portions of sauteed broccoli with garlic oil and tahini). I need to make another veg stew.

Undisclosedlocation · 28/11/2021 19:32

Hmm a little bit better today.

  1. Minestrone soup
  2. Raspberries
  3. Grapes
  4. Fresh tomato sauce
  5. Courgette, aubergine onion and mushroom mixture
  6. As above, had enough for 2 portions total
  7. Salad
Plus might have some fruit and yogurt or something later

1 Satsumas
2 carrot (double portions)
3 beetroot
4 salad leaves, onion, red beans
5 Blueberries, a few cherries
Really not excelling this weekend. Roll on Monday! 🥕🥬🥦

Wildernesstips · 28/11/2021 20:40
  1. Stewed apple
  2. Frozen berries
  3. Salad
  4. Pear
  5. Carrots
  6. Brussel sprouts
  7. Peas
  8. Bit contentious but am counting the home made mince pie as there was at least 45g dried fruit in my mincemeat.

Added a photo of my breakfast. Would love to see more photos on this thread for inspiration.

  1. Stewed apple
  2. Frozen berries
  3. Orange juice
  4. Stir fry vegetables
  5. Homemade mincemeat

Somehow thought I’d done so much better 😁!

OtherPlans · 29/11/2021 22:03

I've not done well on variety so some of my doubling ups may only count as one for 'ten a day' benefits.
2 portions broccoli
Hummus
2 portions puy lentils
Can chopped tomatoes
Large Courgette.
Blueberries

Grape juice
So maximum 9.
I'll have to work on my presentation skills before gracing thread with pics. Lunch today was lots of barely cooked broccoli smothered in hummus.
I think I've mislaid a jar of mincemeat (love it with yogurt)

I am back, after a week of a horrendous cold of doom - not covid! Tests were negative but my goodness I felt rough.

Back on the vegetable drive now though. Good to see everyone keeping on and very inspiring. Yesterday's count:

  1. tomato
  2. cucumber
  3. beetroot
  4. spinach
  5. red onion
  6. grapefuit

Need to try harder but it's not easy when I'm only eating two meals per day!

Today will be better as making vegetarian bibimbap for dinner:

  1. sweet potato
  2. mushrooms
  3. red onion
  4. green beans
  5. cucumber
  6. tomato
  7. butternut squash

Getting there!

Undisclosedlocation · 30/11/2021 16:28

Yesterday:

  1. Lentils
  2. Tomato sauce
  3. Aubergine.onion.courgette.mushroom mix
  4. Grapes
  5. Cherry tomatoes

Today incl what’s planned for dinner

  1. Beetroot dip and red pepper
  2. Carrot
  3. Dates
  4. Lentils
  5. Tomato sauce
  6. Aubergine, mushroom courgette and onion portion
  7. Salad
  8. 1 portion fruit - probably grapes or raspberries
KrispyKale · 30/11/2021 17:01

Tomatoes and lettuce
Carrot
Cherries (defrosted)
Satsuma
Must get back to cooking my own main meals and eating my greens!

Wildernesstips · 30/11/2021 18:23

undisclosed the beetroot dip sounds good

  1. Apple/mixed berries
  2. Kiwi
  3. Broccoli
  4. Pear
  5. Parsnip

Lovely dinner tonight: Jamie Oliver Pork chops with parsnips and pears.

OtherPlans · 30/11/2021 18:25

Today managed to have a veg loaded lunch rather than just eating baked goods and pushing everything to dinner:
Blueberries
Lentils
Carrots
Broccoli
Tomatoes
Courgette
Hummus
7 (9 if I'm allowed to count double portions of broccoli and carrots)

Breathmiller · 30/11/2021 18:31

Well done all.

  1. Mango, passion fruit , pineapple, apple juice smoothie
  2. Spinach
  3. Tomatoes
  4. Cucumber

Pretty poor today. Lovely to see new folks and everyone still posting.

Not had a great few days due to being super busy but today was better.

  1. banana
  2. 2 figs
  3. mushroom/pepper in omelette
  4. mixed salad leaves with added kale & red cabbage
  5. cherry toms/radishes
  6. cucumber/sweetcorn/spring onion
  7. satsuma 7.5) a handful of nuts probably not enough

Think I need to get back onto green juicing as I consume more veg that way (even if it is counted as one!)

Undisclosedlocation · 01/12/2021 19:19

Logging this down has definitely improved my eating habits the last few days. I’m not hitting 10, but before I lurked around 3-4 so it’s progress

  5. Tomatoes
  6. Mixed root veg
  7. Red cabbage and beetroot
  8. Grapes
Wildernesstips · 01/12/2021 19:45

I feel the same, although I don’t get anywhere near 10, it’s a big improvement for me.

  1. Pear
  2. Crunchy salad (mainly cabbage, carrot etc)
  3. Cherry tomatoes
  4. Peppers/onions
  5. Cooked tomatoes
  6. Baby leaf salad
OtherPlans · 01/12/2021 19:48

This thread is reminding me I need to broaden the veg and fruit I'm eating. Tropical fruit, beetroot, aubergines etc

Today
Grapes
Blueberries
Broccoli and cauliflower (1 portion combined)
Chopped tomatoes
Courgette
Lentils and butterbeans (1 portion combined)
So 7. My portion sizes were down today.

Breathmiller · 01/12/2021 21:39
  1. Beans
  2. Spinach
  3. Tomatoes
  4. Yellow pepper

OtherPlans · 02/12/2021 20:17

Today
Grape juice
Carrots
Broccoli and cauliflower
Chopped tomatoes
Hummus
Blackbeans
Courgette
By weight this was 5/6 portions. A bit samey but trying to use up broccoli etc before it goes off.

RosieLeeD · 02/12/2021 20:24

Not sure if anyone has posted something similar but this is a good reminder of the variety of fruit and veg available!

OtherPlans · 02/12/2021 23:40

Nice! A friend who does crossfit did the 800g challenge (basically what I'm aiming for really). The emphasis on a variety of veg and fruit helps
therealfooddietitians.com/800gchallenge/
At the moment I'm just trying to reach that and I don't limit anything (feta/oil/mayo/bread) to get there.

Breathmiller · 03/12/2021 08:57

I liked that plate of food image actually. If I was much more organised in life and didn't have the troops to feed I would lovd to set up 800 grammes every morning and make my day's food from that. I think it's organisation that stops me at the moment.

Yesterday wasn’t too bad, but got our work meal out tonight, so unlikely to be very many today. In the past, that would mean I’d ‘failed’ but I’m going to try hard not to think like that and just get focussed tomorrow on eating well
Yesterday.

  1. Hummus
  2. Cucumber
  3. Grapes
  4. Salad
  5. Tomato sauce
  6. Veg in hm chilli
  7. Kidney beans
OtherPlans · 03/12/2021 12:19

I have homemade fish and chips tonight so I'm intending lower portions today. Enjoy tonight Undisclosed!
