Eating our 10-a-day thread

Breathmiller · 30/07/2021 10:37

I would like to try to start a project of getting my 10-a-day of fruit and veg in every day.

Anyone fancy joining me? I find groups on here of support so useful.

I know lentils and beans and chickpeas are part of it too so I will up them. I'm vegan so I'm hoping that should make things easier as I eat lentils as part of my diet anyway.

This thread is for everyone who would like to focus on 'eating the rainbow' as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Or anyone who does this already who has any hints and tips?

Today I've probably had the winter version of the mn huge salad
A mix of
Carrots
Peppers
Leeks
Spinach
Cauliflower
Peas
Chopped tomatoes
Which I weighed out as 500g so around 6 portions
Had half of it with hummus for lunch
Other half with roast potatoes and salmon.
I'll have another large baked apple in a minute so hovering around 7 portions now

TwentinQuarantino · 21/11/2021 22:16

Today felt good to be back on track. I had zero veg yesterday and it helped my bloatedness etc.

  1. banana
  2. pear
  3. satsuma 4 and 5) a basic medium salad, so mixed lettuce leaves/cucumber without skin/spring onion/sweetcorn/half carrot
  4. stuffed pepper
  5. sweet potato mash
  6. frozen mixed veg, mainly peas
Wildernesstips · 22/11/2021 06:23

I always count hummus as a portion too Other. I love a baked apple too, and if you can cram 30g of dried fruit in it that is another portion 😄!

  1. Baked beans
  2. Mushrooms
  3. Orange juice
  4. Carrots
  5. Cauliflower
  6. Peas

Hummus is counted as your pulse for the day. (Am I right that pulses are just counted the once?)Anyhow it's all good!

Yesterday I made a big Sunday vat of puy lentil and vegetables in tomato sauce. Very nice it was too and that's tonight's dinner covered too.
1 Blueberries defrosted
2 Satsuma
3 Carrot
4 lentil, tin tomatoes
5 mushroom, shallot, red onion, leek
6 Broccoli
I did eat a lot of carrot both raw and cooked yesterday and a lot of broccoli So it was a good 6, iyswim.
Baked apples might get done this evening.

OtherPlans · 22/11/2021 17:25

Oh good. I make my own hummus so I know it's full of chickpeas. I'll count that too.
Will add dried fruit to my baked apple too. I had baked apple for breakfast today which also warmed the kitchen up nicely, brrr. I had a portion of dahl for lunch with leeks so I'm up to 3 so far with another 4 coming for dinner (the stew which I'll have with chicken and then some cherries).

Breathmiller · 22/11/2021 17:32

Yeah, chickpeas count so houmous does.

It's supposed to be one portion only however many portions you have of beans, lentils, chckpeas. But that's for 5 a day so I figure we're allowed to count 2 different ones for 10 a day. 😁

  1. Prune juice
  2. Cucumber
  3. Tomatoes
  4. Beetroot
  5. Spinach lentil lemon soup/Raw spinach
  6. Houmous plus chickpea/lentil curry
  7. Apricots

All this talk of baked apples is making me fancy one. With fruit inside, maple syrup and toasted flaked almonds and soya cream. So not so healthy after all 🤣

KrispyKale · 23/11/2021 18:37

I had yesterday's baked apple and blueberries for breakfast with yoghurt.

4 satsuma
5 aubergine
6 carrot 🥕
And I will probably have some olives and mini tomatoes shortly with a few greens.

Breathmiller · 24/11/2021 08:59

Lots of good numbers. Well done folks.

I've been busy the last few days and lots of eating out. Trying ti make good choices when I do go out for dinner. The vegan aubergine parmigiano in Pizza express is amazing.

  4. Aubergine
  5. Tomatoes

Breathmiller · 25/11/2021 09:03

Yesterday

  1. Tomatoes
  2. Cucumber
  3. Mushrooms
  4. Spinach
  5. Onion/olives
  6. Red pepper
  7. Broccoli soup

It's so much harder when only having 2 meals a day. But I am enjoying having no breakfast or a very small one. It's how I used to be all the time. I do have a very active morning today though so had a couple of medjool dates with my coffee for a little energy boost.

KrispyKale · 25/11/2021 11:39

Looking at what I eat compared to my very tall active husband I think we can expect that there's some leeway in quantities depending on size and activity level? That's what I tell myself. (Tbh he was shocked when I said the "5 a day" fresh portion was 80 g. He was counting 3 or 4 in a mixed veg soup.
Anyway yesterday :
1 Blueberries
2 carrot
3 cooked beetroot
4 Tomatoes, mixed salad leaves, shallot
5 broccoli
6 satsuma
Dinner had a lot of potato casserole (with more shallots but still..) it's a shame they don't count! I did have wintry beetroot salad for lunch instead of a sandwich so that's a plus.

Breathmiller · 25/11/2021 21:16
  1. Dates
  2. Broccoli soup
  3. Spinach
  4. H/m Veg lasagne

Poor effort on the veg and fruit side but I'm not hungry so I'm not going to eat just for the sake of it.

OP posts:
OtherPlans · 25/11/2021 22:25

Lower score here too after a chaotic day
Grapes
Courgette
Hummus
Haricot beans

TwentinQuarantino · 26/11/2021 17:01

Not had a great few days but today I had -

  1. apple
  2. 2 satsumas
  3. grapes
  4. 2 figs
  5. pineapple slices (tinned)
  6. cucumber/sweetcorn
  7. carrot/coleslaw

Was meant to steam some frozen veg with tonight's tea but DH forgot to get some on the last shop. Never mind.

Breathmiller · 26/11/2021 18:35

7s a good haul Twentin.

I thought I'd treat myself to a packet of pineapple sticks last Friday. I know it's not the most environmentally friendly way to get fruit but I react to the skin so thought I'd have it instead of (plastic wrapped) sweeties. Well I couldn't find them last week when emptying the shopping so figured I hadn't put them in the trolly after all. Nope, found the bag in the boot of my car today that was so bloated up I don't think it would have been long til it had exploded manky week old pineapple over my car. Ewwwww.

Anyway...today

  1. Dates
  2. Asparagus soup
  3. Tomatoes/olives
  4. Red/orange/yellow pepper
  5. Courgette/onion
  6. Pomegranate
  7. Houmuss
  8. Carrots
  9. Beetroot
Half portion mushrooms
OP posts:

What an inspiring thread. I really need to do this as menopause and crap eating habits have done nothing for my waistline or more importantly my energy levels.I doubt if I usually get more than 5 max, but I’m going to make myself accountable here and see if I can improve. Went out late today to but a load of supplies so hopefully as the week goes on, I will get better

  1. Stir fry veg
  2. Raspberries
  3. Mushrooms
  4. Salad
  5. Tomatoes
  6. Grapes
