too good to go food waste app - anyone else use it?

Huge fan of this app - friend told me about it over lockdown and after I'd had my first "magic bag" I was hooked! The basic idea is that you pay for a lucky bag of food from a local retailer which would otherwise have gone in the bin. Picked up a bag from a M&S petrol station shop last night, cost me £4, got two large packs of salmon, two panini wraps, two packs of sandwiches, a side salad, a bag of mixed veg, and a pack of melon. Greggs also do bags which the kids enjoy - most of the bags we've had from there have a couple of the bakes, sausage rolls, cakes, pastries.

Yes it's all short-dated, yellow sticker stuff but lots can be frozen. Or eaten the next day. Definitely worth looking at if you're flexible about what you eat. Lots of restaurants do it too, although pick up times can be much later in the evening.

Any other fans???

I found a bread-saving one too.
www.earthandwheat.com/

Haven't tried it yet so can't say whether it is worth it or not.

snaxinyourslacks · 31/07/2021 17:13

I finally got a box from Morrison's.

1 big bag jacket potatoes
1 celery
1 bag mixed peppers
4 punnets raspberries
1 big punnet blueberries
I bag parsnips
1 seeded loaf
1 pack crumpets
2 packs scones
1 pack teacakes
1 cheddar cheese
1 pack fresh green beans
1 mint plant
1 cheese and tomato focaccia

Really impressed with everything.

TowandaForever · 31/07/2021 17:19

@snaxinyourslacks

How much did that cost?

It was £3.09 for the box. The cheese alone was priced at £3.18 and it's dated until 18th August so it's a definite bargain.

Local Indian does a good one and you can collect it for a late lunch.
Local Costa is rubbish. Both times I have had 2 chocolate cake things and that's all. Cost £3.59 which is about what they retail at.
Other local restaurants sell out very quickly at their once per week slot and the local spar does one daily but I can't always get there at the right time.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 31/07/2021 18:01

I downloaded the app yesterday bought one but it got cancelled. Got another one for this evening, hope they don't cancel again, I'll report back later.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 31/07/2021 18:02

It's a sainsbury one btw

alexdgr8 · 31/07/2021 18:05

well, if it helps some people that's good.
but i rather just go to the shop near closing time and see what's reduced.
i cannot use large amounts. dont have a freezer, and the fridge struggles in summer, and is small.
would you say most people doing this have spare money, and space, or big family.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 31/07/2021 18:06

All primed and ready to go today. No food needs saving.

My local spar usually has 3+ bags. Today nada.

I really wanted to join in.

Is Saturday a special no leftovers day?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 31/07/2021 18:08

My co-worker who told me about it, is on poor wage, lives alone and uses it as her weekly shop. She tries to get a Morrison’s bag. No idea if she has a big freezer, but I think she genuinely needs the food.
TheGenealogist · 31/07/2021 18:19

Have just managed to reserve a Morrison's one for tomorrow afternoon! I have heard they are good so fingers crossed.

If you live alone I can see that you might struggle - and a whole Greggs bag of steak bakes or doughnuts isn't great. But as other people have said a bag of groceries from M&S is more varied - bags in the past I've had contain things like a muesli bowl for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and some sort of ready meal for dinner along with maybe a cake and some fruit as snacks. Food for the whole day for one person, for £4.

We have 3 teenagers in this house though so food does not last long.

@DobbyTheHouseElk I think a lot of hte smaller shops have been hit with the supply chain issues caused by the pingdemic. Our local Co-Op is much emptier than usual and don't have nearly as much yellow sticker stuff. Maybe that's what's causing Spar / Nisa and the likes to cancel bags.

Just checked the app and managed to bag the last Morrison’s one. I hope it’s as good as some on here

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 31/07/2021 19:16

I’ve just got a Morrison’s one for tomorrow too. I’ve had 4/5 before. 2 have been total rubbish (I complained and got refunded) one was okay and one was great.
Ours just have fruit and veg and a bit of bakery stuff. I wish we would get cheese!

Vanilla1Cookies · 31/07/2021 19:20

3 Morrison ones for tomorrow then…

Wonder who bags the best one Grin

NotJustACigar · 31/07/2021 19:27

Just had a Spar one, thought it was good.
1 chicken samosa
1 large packet breaded chicken pieces
2 potato roastis
1 bacon sandwich
1 packet of stir fry vegetables
1 chocolate donut

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 31/07/2021 19:29

Just picked up the sainsburys one. I got -
4 tuna mayo sandwiches
1 steak bake
1 punnet of grapes
1 bag of oranges
1 box of frubes.

Quite pleased as we're going on a picnic tomorrow 😁

Boobahs · 31/07/2021 19:43

I actually managed to get one of the Morrisons ones, after months of trying! Been to pick it up this evening and got:

A cauliflower
Bag of potatoes
Bag of onions
Bag of runner beans
Bag of oranges
Punt of mushrooms
Bag of bananas (but a couple of these were past saving)

Good for £3.09, but I was hoping for some treats Wink

Obviously that was supposed to be punnet of mushrooms Hmm

I would have loved this one!

I got over excited and ordered a Greggs bag from our local Greggs two days on the trot (I haven't been able to get one in ages) now I feel disgusting as my fridge is full of pasties and cakes!!

Tiddleztheelephant · 31/07/2021 19:51

Today's bag:
2 tubs of chicken pasta salad.
1 chicken baguette
1 cheese salad baguette
1 chocolate donut
4 pack of jam donuts
1 sausage and bean pastie.

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 31/07/2021 19:55

It’s meant to be at least £10 worth and i don’t think that is. I’d complain to good to go if I had that, it means they feedback to the store.

Tiddleztheelephant · 31/07/2021 20:02

@PizzaPiePizzaPie which bag was that meant for?

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 31/07/2021 20:03

Oops it didn’t quote @Boobahs Morrison’s bag
