too good to go food waste app - anyone else use it?

Huge fan of this app - friend told me about it over lockdown and after I'd had my first "magic bag" I was hooked! The basic idea is that you pay for a lucky bag of food from a local retailer which would otherwise have gone in the bin. Picked up a bag from a M&S petrol station shop last night, cost me £4, got two large packs of salmon, two panini wraps, two packs of sandwiches, a side salad, a bag of mixed veg, and a pack of melon. Greggs also do bags which the kids enjoy - most of the bags we've had from there have a couple of the bakes, sausage rolls, cakes, pastries.

Yes it's all short-dated, yellow sticker stuff but lots can be frozen. Or eaten the next day. Definitely worth looking at if you're flexible about what you eat. Lots of restaurants do it too, although pick up times can be much later in the evening.

Any other fans???

I got this bag from Gregg's yesterday. Personally I didn't think it was worth the full retail price of £8. Other bags I've had from them have been much more generous. I emailed Too Good To Go and I've had a reply back that the contents do equal £8 retail value. I'm not convinced though.

I've had a couple of brilliant ones - M&S/wild bean cafe and an independent posh garden centre deli type place.

Absolutely addictive as a PP said!

@H8theW8

DH has just been to pick up a 'meal' from an independent restaurant. First time we've tried the Meal option. The restaurant does Bao Buns, Burgers, Fries, Chicken, etc. £4 instead of £12 for a magic bag. We ordered one each and both received the same. A tiny box containing HALF a sandwich and a tiny chicken goujon.

Less than impressed, not only with the amount but also the quality. It was a soggy, sloppy, tasteless mess! I've emailed TGTG with photos so hoping to get a refund. It wasn't £8 worth of food, never mind £24 👎🏼

Pleased to report that I received a full refund from TGTG for this poor effort! They apologised, agreed it wasn't enough food and said they'd be contacting the restaurant to find out what happened.

I also picked up a magic bag from Greggs earlier, containing:

A cheese baguette
Scotch pie
Steak bake
2 ring donuts with pink icing
2 ring donuts with chocolate icing

I'm more than happy with this!

RevolutionRadio · 02/08/2021 19:05

Well my Gregg's bag contained 2 Tuna crunch baguettes, 2 pots of fruit, a pack of scones, a pack of jam doughnuts and 4 iced doughnuts.

Now I'm not going to get through all these sweet things, was hoping for bakery things.

zobalina77 · 02/08/2021 19:32

Off the back of this thread I downloaded the app. I was supposed to be getting a Gregg's bag this evening but they cancelled it early this afternoon. Ds is devastated 😂. Have got another for pick up tomorrow.

Could you go in and price it up and then send them the total?
TowandaForever · 02/08/2021 19:48

@snaxinyourslacks

Wow that was a good buy!

Babymamamama · 02/08/2021 20:15

Just picked up our first Greggs bag. As I’m on a diet I’m pleased not too much sweet stuff.
Tuna crunch baguette
Egg Mayo sandwich
Chicken bake
Chocolate muffin
Vegan sausage roll
All things DD and I like. Saves me cooking tonight.

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 02/08/2021 20:29

I actually had a greggs bag once. It was all donuts, nothing else. Put me off getting one again

NotMyCat · 02/08/2021 21:03

Ooh are Starbucks ones worth it? There's a £5 one available

TooGoodToGoNewbie · 02/08/2021 21:58

A cheese baguette
Scotch pie
Steak bake
2 ring donuts with pink icing
2 ring donuts with chocolate icing

That seems more that we got!
We had:
A chocolate iced doughnut
A cookie
A baguette
A steak slice
A sausage roll.

@Babymamamama sorry, I know you were pleased to not have sweet stuff but re the diet -chicken bake 422 calories, tuna crunch baguette 461 cals. You could make a full on dinner for less calories. Sorry!

Babymamamama · 03/08/2021 00:07

Ha! We definitely didn’t eat it all I can assure you. I had the baguette and DD the vegan sausage roll. I’m afraid the rest is wasted. I’m doing OMAD (that’s another thread) so absolutely didn’t want the calories. Smile

NotJustACigar · 03/08/2021 18:16

Just had my first cancellation today...booked another bag at a different place and had my second cancellation. Oh well it's all part of the fun I suppose.

I found out there's a reddit forum dedicated to To Good to Go where people post pictures of their hauls for people to discuss. It's quite fun and also nice to see that the Americans tend to get jealous of the Brits as we get more stuff in our bags usually Grin.

MissSmith80 · 03/08/2021 19:02

Just signed up thanks to this thread and secured a Morrison's bag for tomorrow - I'll check back in with feedback

snaxinyourslacks · 03/08/2021 19:33

Had a bag from Spar at a petrol station today.
4 x small bags pre cut melon, grapes etc.
1 x pesto pasta salad
1 x meat and potato pie
1 x egg and Mayo sandwich
1 x triple big breakfast sandwich.

Not bad at all.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 03/08/2021 19:50

I downloaded the app on the back of this thread. I now have a freezer full of bread after only 2 bags! Don't think I'll bother again. I was very hopeful for the mini Waitrose, but basically bread items, one of which had visible mould.

TheGenealogist · 03/08/2021 21:22

Tonight's M&S garage bag. Bit meh. Value ok but nothing that's particularly interesting

4 pears
Pot of Bircher muesli
Ham and egg salad
Bag of lettuce
Pasta ready meal
Bean salad thing

My first ever bag got cancelled! I'm trying again and have reserved a Starbucks one

Earth and wheat order came today, it all fitted in one freeze drawer if that helps anyone
I got crumpets, scotch pancakes, mini naan breads, wholewheat pittas, wholewheat wraps and white wraps

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 03/08/2021 23:15

My mum tried this tonight and was delighted to receive, amongst other things, an M&S family size strawberry trifle.

Vanilla1Cookies · 04/08/2021 07:59

I had to cancel my bag from Morrison’s daily the other day as I decided to take the kids to the cinema instead.

I have now bagged one from a Morrison’s daily for tonight instead.

So far we have used lots of the things and nothing has really gone to waste.

I wish I had a m&s one near me

Vanilla1Cookies · 04/08/2021 08:01

I’m hoping the petrol Morrison’s one is as good as the store as it’s a lot closer.

Boobahs · 04/08/2021 08:04

Got one for a Morrison's Daily to collect tonight, let's see if it's better than my first one!

Vanilla1Cookies · 04/08/2021 08:24

What was in your first one?
Boobahs · 04/08/2021 09:10

@Vanilla1Cookies

I got one from a big Morrisons and it had

A cauliflower
Bag of potatoes
Bag of onions
Bag of runner beans
Bag of oranges
Punt of mushrooms
Bag of bananas (but a couple of these were past saving)

Someone on here told me that it should be £10 worth of food, so I queried it with TooGoodToGo and they agreed that it wasn't worth that and refunded me.

CurryLover55 · 04/08/2021 09:17

Never heard of this app. I live in Cornwall so it would be a big drive to some shops eg M & S is about 15 miles away & Morrisons is a good 20 minutes drive I’d say. If small local shops are on board, I would give it a go.
