too good to go food waste app - anyone else use it?

Huge fan of this app - friend told me about it over lockdown and after I'd had my first "magic bag" I was hooked! The basic idea is that you pay for a lucky bag of food from a local retailer which would otherwise have gone in the bin. Picked up a bag from a M&S petrol station shop last night, cost me £4, got two large packs of salmon, two panini wraps, two packs of sandwiches, a side salad, a bag of mixed veg, and a pack of melon. Greggs also do bags which the kids enjoy - most of the bags we've had from there have a couple of the bakes, sausage rolls, cakes, pastries.

Yes it's all short-dated, yellow sticker stuff but lots can be frozen. Or eaten the next day. Definitely worth looking at if you're flexible about what you eat. Lots of restaurants do it too, although pick up times can be much later in the evening.

Any other fans???

@Treadlightly

I've been using the app for a week or so & have been really pleased so far! I just collected mine from Morrison's! I'm quite impressed Smile
I’d be pleased with that. It would all get eaten here

That's a brilliant box from Morrison's. I'm going to try get one every week. My big bag of potatoes have been made into mash and in the freezer. The big bag of peppers will be used for roasted pepper soup tonight and frozen.

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 01/08/2021 15:46

Terrible bag from Morrison’s:

2 lots of lettuce
Some pak Choi
Broccoli
Bag of wonky carrots
Some white rolls
2 bags of rotten new potatoes

Worst one yet.

finalcall · 01/08/2021 15:51

Thanks to this thread I've downloaded the app and ordered an M and S one for tonight.

That's pretty bad. I think it said the original selling price of the Morrison's bag should be £10 so I would compain.

I’ve done that and I’ve said it’s my last. Of 6 bags from them one was brilliant, two were average and 3 rubbish.

RevolutionRadio · 01/08/2021 16:34

Just managed to get a Gregg's one for the first time, will collect it tomorrow!

Vanilla1Cookies · 01/08/2021 16:48

Here’s my Morrison’s box.

Pretty pleased with it. Everything will get eaten apart from the med tray probably.

Vanilla1Cookies · 01/08/2021 16:49

I would probably class it as average though and not great.

Feels like they went up to bang on the £10 mark.

Vanilla1Cookies · 01/08/2021 16:52

Has anyone ever had a bag from a Morrison’s daily? I have one of them closer then a normal Morrison’s.

Boobahs · 01/08/2021 17:47

They've refunded me the money for mine already. I'll try again another day!

That was quick then Smile

I just managed to get another Morrison’s bag for tomorrow Grin

Don’t think il be doing a proper weeks shop this week now!

NotJustACigar · 01/08/2021 19:04

Like quite a few of us I got my first Morrisons bag today:

7 punnets of raspberries
6 punnets of nectarines
2 punnets of blackberries
1 punnet of strawberries
And around 10 bags of salad most of which will probably go in the compost bin as it's starting to get a little slimy.

I'm very happy with that as I eat a ridiculous amount of fruit. I'll probably make some raspberry jam and will share out the nectarines with my parents - they're still firm enough that I think they'll last quite a while.

Thegreymethod · 01/08/2021 19:11

@TheGenealogist

Yes you pay on the app when you reserve. Credit card or PayPal. I think you can cancel up to about 2 hours before the collection time without paying.

One thing I did realise is that if it says collection 21:00 to 22:00 you cannot go at 20:58 as the "swipe to collect" only appears exactly at the time stated. So you might have to hang around until the clock ticks round to 9pm.

I got there 10 minutes early yesterday and the lady in Greggs just told me to swipe it myself when I got home! We've had a few roast dinners from carvery type places, they are great and so big! Me and my husband ordered one each for when the children went to bed then they ended up having a late night and there was more than enough for us all to have one (3 children) only problem is you can only pick them up around 8.30 so it's quite late to eat a roast (not that it bothered us!)
Babymamamama · 01/08/2021 20:29

Ooh I’ve just ordered two…m and a for this evening and Greggs (for DD) for tomorrow as I’m low carbing. Will report back.

NotMyCat · 01/08/2021 20:32

@DaxtheDestroyer

I found a bread-saving one too. www.earthandwheat.com/

Haven't tried it yet so can't say whether it is worth it or not.

I get earth and wheat and it's good I live alone but you can chuck the whole lot in the freezer and still easy to separate. The crumpets are some of the nicest I've had
finalcall · 01/08/2021 20:39

Just got back with my M and S one

BLT sandwich
Pack of iced buns
Pack of bagels
Four pears
Chilli con crane ready meal

Smile
H8theW8 · 01/08/2021 20:48

DH has just been to pick up a 'meal' from an independent restaurant. First time we've tried the Meal option. The restaurant does Bao Buns, Burgers, Fries, Chicken, etc. £4 instead of £12 for a magic bag. We ordered one each and both received the same. A tiny box containing HALF a sandwich and a tiny chicken goujon.

Less than impressed, not only with the amount but also the quality. It was a soggy, sloppy, tasteless mess! I've emailed TGTG with photos so hoping to get a refund. It wasn't £8 worth of food, never mind £24 👎🏼
