Do you keep your windows open at night?

I’ve never dared do this due to security concerns… but I am so hot tonight I am considering taking the risk. Anyone else? Am I silly to worry?

Our bedroom windows are open all night all through the year. Sometimes I look down our road and am surprised to see no windows open.

warmfluffytowels · 19/07/2021 13:41

I don't remember the last time we closed our bedroom window - probably when when we went on holiday several years ago!

Downstairs ones are open during the day when we're at home.

CatherineAragon · 19/07/2021 13:48

Those who leave their windows open all year round.. do you not care about your heating bills or global warming?

muddyford · 19/07/2021 13:56

We only close our bedroom window when we are away from home or the outside temperature drops below -5C.

We just turn the radiators off in those rooms.
CremeEggThief · 19/07/2021 14:07

Not downstairs, but upstairs when it's hot, yes. Even though a man once climbed through a neighbour's tiny bathroom window (same size as mine) and there are always people taking things from back yards around here, according to the town Facebook group anyway! So yes, I do, but I know it's a risk!

Teabag55 · 19/07/2021 14:10

@CatherineAragon we rarely use the heating, and never overnight.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 19/07/2021 14:11

Only if it's mega hot and there's no air and even then they're on security lock and not actually open. I'm in a ground floor flat plus I don't want to be chasing my indoor Cats arse around the streets if he spots his kitty GF outside

WhiskeyNeverStartsToTasteNice · 19/07/2021 14:28

Yes always, but bedrooms are on first floor

I dont understand this point, why would someone who opens their windows care less about global warming?

vampirethriller · 19/07/2021 14:40

I turn the heating off at night so I don't worry about it at all.

LadyCatStark · 19/07/2021 15:06

No we can’t and we’re on the 3rd floor of our house with velum windows so no real security risk but there’s a cockerels at opposite ends of our village who have a crow off at 4am every morning 🤬🤬🤬

LadyCatStark · 19/07/2021 15:07

*velux windows

I care more about having fresh air which is good for my physical and mental well-being, and about having a house that isn’t mouldy/musty/damp.

We don’t heat our house to a ridiculous extent in the winter anyway, and we don’t use the heating at night at all, ever.

When I was a young single parent with two small children I walked everywhere with them for years instead of using petrol guzzling cars. I have taken two flights in the last twenty odd years. I buy local (where I can), organic fruit and veg on the whole and throw away no food (well, one courgette and half a small bag of salad in the last year, IIRC) and have bought all clothes barring underwear and socks second-hand over the past six months or so and will continue this indefinitely. I’ve had the same phone and iPad for years and don’t buy any ‘must-have’ new versions of gadgets as a matter of course, and won’t in the future. My phone/tablet will be replaced when/if it becomes obsolete and/or no longer works. I do my bit.

I never heat my bedroom as I sleep better in cold air.
DaisyWaldron · 19/07/2021 15:54

I don't think anyone has the heating on and the windows open at the time, so it doesn't really affect heating bills or global warming. In winter I have a cosy wool duvet, warm socks and a hot water bottle in bed.

Ninkanink · 19/07/2021 16:07

We do, tbf - in the winter we use the heating at a low to moderate level in all rooms but the bedrooms, to keep the house/stone/etc dry as much as possible but we also keep all windows on the latch for fresh air to circulate. We’re willing to pay for some heat that might escape.

Caspianberg · 19/07/2021 16:09

Our house is well insulated. In winter at -5/-10 we often leave a window or two open for fresh air. At -20 will still open windows but not all night just an quick 30 mins before bed for fresh air. Heating goes off at night here from 9pm-7am and house still stays around 21 degrees overnight.

garlictwist · 19/07/2021 16:22

Yes the upstairs ones. If someone is going to get a ladder at 2am and try to climb in I'd be very surprised.

TanyaLoves · 19/07/2021 16:23

Always have to have the windows open! Its good to have fresh air otherwise the room gets stuffy. Only downside are the insects Hmm

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 19/07/2021 16:25

No because there are big old spiders here and I don't want to wake up to another one sprinting over my face.
I just have a fan on.

Maggiesfarm · 19/07/2021 16:27

I've always slept with a window open, only slightly open in cold weather. It is not big enough for anyone to climb through and anyway if someone put a ladder up against the front of my house, I'm sure I or a neighbour would hear it. My road is well lit too.

Bluntness100 · 19/07/2021 16:40

We have a bat problem so generally no as they get confused and fly in, however in this extreme heat I’m taking my chances with the bedroom windows, never would leave them open downstairs though.

Shannith · 19/07/2021 16:44

Everything open top and bottom this time of year in the day. Including the front door most of the time. All upstairs windows at night and at least one in the winter (cats).

But I'm semi rural - totally different when I lived in London. One of the reasons I moved here!

I dont understand this point, why would someone who opens their windows care less about global warming?

Because the heating system has to work harder to keep the temperature stable, which produces more greenhouse gases. It’s also going to increase bills substantially. I only have the windows open when the heating is off.
