Do you keep your windows open at night?

I’ve never dared do this due to security concerns… but I am so hot tonight I am considering taking the risk. Anyone else? Am I silly to worry?

Only when it's as hot as this! Normally shut and I not open in day but in warm weather. Cos of the spiders Blush

SquitMcJit · 18/07/2021 23:25

Yes, always have upstairs windows open at night, if possible.

Sadly, fire-idiot nearby somewhere has just lit a bonfire or similar nearby again tonight, so have had to close all the windows in this heat to avoid fumes and smoke.

Thanks for that. Seriously, who would even light a fire in this heat?

Ninkanink · 18/07/2021 23:25

Upstairs windows are always open, unless we’re out.

properg · 18/07/2021 23:27

Yes but we have windows that are ok to leave open if that makes sense

AdobeWanKenobi · 18/07/2021 23:28

Not at the moment as the air conditioner is venting through it (has a zip like attachment that sticks to the window so you don’t let air in)
On a normal night the window is always open. Even in deepest winter.

nordica · 18/07/2021 23:28

In the bedroom yes, UPVC windows with a built-in ventilation latch that means it's open by a few inches and couldn't be opened further unless with lots of force. 1st floor and on the street side so chances of anyone trying to break in are very slim.

properg · 18/07/2021 23:28

We've stayed in a few air bnbs where they only have big windows which always makes me wonder how they cope with heat.

Whattodonow5 · 18/07/2021 23:31

No as I've tried it but the dawn chorus is so loud it wakes me up and I can't get back to sleep.

ContessaVerde · 18/07/2021 23:33

WRT moths and flying insects, never have the window open with the light on. This won’t help with bats though.

But Sounds to me like op and others are suffering from anxiety about somebody climbing in through your windows.

It would be interesting to know how often this occurs as compared to say car accidents.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 18/07/2021 23:35

Every window I can open, is. I live in an old flat, so all heat is retained in the walls. Sash windows are awesome for circulating air.
I'm only bothered by seagulls and early morning loud people.
My flat is above a shop and beside a pub and there is cctv at the top of my street.

BringOnTheOtherWorlders · 18/07/2021 23:38

Never. I have allergies - trees and grass - plus, it lets the air conditioning out.
I have had several peeping toms - but always through closed windows. I would worry about crime leaving the windows open though.

saraclara · 18/07/2021 23:39

I have my bedroom windows open all summer. By a few inches most nights, but wide open tonight.

0DETTE · 18/07/2021 23:42

Right now we sleep with all the windows wide open and the back door as well, as it’s so hot. But we live in the country.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 18/07/2021 23:45

@Breathmiller

What do you all do about flying things? We live on a farm and get bats. Usually at least one a year makes its way in through the chimney or a hole somewhere.

I am terrified of flying things inside. I literally cannot be in a room with anything of a half decent size flying about.

We get huge moths, you know the big buggers with big bodies. I could not sleep with them around. We had one a couple pf weeks ago and it woke me up banging on the inside of the window. I ran out the room in a panic and slept in with ds.

So, do you just happily sleep with these things flying around?

We don't have curtains which probably doesn't help.

I am so hot upstairs tonight but just cannot bear the thought of opening a window.
I'm not generally a wuss about things but this just sends me into a total flap.

Oh gosh that sounds awful! But it's not normal.

To the OP, house insurance policies usually say you can keep windows open in rooms you're sleeping in, or words to that effect, so it can't be that dangerous to do so

wheresmymojo · 18/07/2021 23:45

Yes, upstairs.

And when very hot like tonight I find our bedroom too stuffy so sleep on the sofa with the double patio doors wide open.

We live in a very safe area though.

properg · 18/07/2021 23:46

We don't have curtains which probably doesn't help.

You need something curtains, shutters, blinds etc

properg · 18/07/2021 23:46

I couldn't sleep with doors open though I'd be anxious

HmmmmmmInteresting · 18/07/2021 23:46

Shock

olidora63 · 18/07/2021 23:47

Yes and including the conservatory windows!

NotMyCat · 18/07/2021 23:48

@ContessaVerde pass on statistics. But as a single female in an area that isn't the safest, I wouldn't get any sleep with the window open on the ground floor anyway! So I may as well shut it

properg · 18/07/2021 23:48

So, do you just happily sleep with these things flying around?

Don't have things flying about, maybe occasionally a small moth but lights off if windows open & we have shutters.

Myplantsare · 18/07/2021 23:49

Wide open, country here

properg · 18/07/2021 23:49

i'm in London

OpalOwl · 18/07/2021 23:51

Big window open every night, wide open tonight, patio doors too.
We live in a bungalow but Its too hot, seriously contemplating sleeping on a sun lounger in the garden, we are semi rural so wont scare any neighbours Blush
