Do you keep your windows open at night?

I’ve never dared do this due to security concerns… but I am so hot tonight I am considering taking the risk. Anyone else? Am I silly to worry?

I don't. I snore so I don't want people walking past hearing me! We have a fan on though.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 18/07/2021 23:52

you are not silly if you have good reasons to be extra cautious

we have all the windows open & ceiling fans going.
if it wasn't for bloody foxes we'd leave garden doors open too!

CatherineAragon · 19/07/2021 00:33

Upstairs windows are always open in the summer. I usually have the bedroom window open in winter too at night.

Snugglybuggly · 19/07/2021 00:34

Yes upstairs

DaisyWaldron · 19/07/2021 06:24

Yes, because I like fresh air, but then DH closes them, because he finds it too noisy. So whoever goes to bed last wins.

joystir59 · 19/07/2021 06:29

Most windows open all the time except when I go out I close ground floor windows.

Wjevtvha · 19/07/2021 06:31

We do all year round although have to admit that when DH is away I close them unless it’s really hot

Roselilly36 · 19/07/2021 06:35

Our bedroom windows are always open, we live in a bungalow.

cakeseeker · 19/07/2021 06:55

Always, yes. With nets over the curtains to stop flies getting in.

vampirethriller · 19/07/2021 07:00

Bedroom window is open all year round but I've had every one open in this heat. I live in a first floor flat though.

actiongirl1978 · 19/07/2021 07:01

Always. Especially when it's hot.

We are v rural and occasionally get the odd bird boshing itself up and down the landing at 5am where its flown in at dawn. (v big windows, don't cover them at night when it's hot).

Never had a bat come in. Don't really have a moth issue, though the children know that if they turn on a light they have to shut the window until it is turned off again!

We are currently staying in our caravan and last night had every window and door open all night (with bug screens across).

greencase · 19/07/2021 07:06

For those worried about flying things: a few years ago a huge cockchafer beetle made its way into my bed and crawled up my leg.

I bought a roll of lace fabric and made some window covers that I pin up with drawing pins over the open windows in summer. Works a treat.

Might not prevent burglars admittedly.

TeddingtonTrashbag · 19/07/2021 07:07

@cheezy

I can’t sleep with the window closed - I don’t know how anyone can!! Mine are open in the depth of winter.
Same here! Not been murdered yet. E the amount of timidity there is around.
Teabag55 · 19/07/2021 07:11

Upstairs windows always open. All year round.

Oblomov21 · 19/07/2021 07:18

Always have. Never worried about security, of younger ds's failing out, or anyone breaking in. Someone breaking in is just not something I worry about.
Do you all worry about that? Do you not feel safe where you live?

LazyDragonTooth · 19/07/2021 07:20

Someone climbed in the open window of the bedroom int he flat below me. Climbed in, went across the people in bed waking them, they kicked him into the shared hallway where he banged and shouted for ages, smashing into doors and kicking the walls. Although this was a drunk, not a burglar, and I'm upstairs not ground floor it has 100% put me off having windows open anywhere, I even worry if I'm awake and in the room. And when working as a nanny in London a fox came into the house through open kitchen doors, right into the living room where the baby was! And when I was at secondary, there was a spate of burglars going into flats and houses through open windows just to snatch bags and keys etc, in and out. My friend's family had a flat in a converted house so when the robber went in it was into the room my friend shared with 2 younger siblings! Stole her school bag and legged it.

Basically a few experiences through my life have left me frit to even leave a room with an open window, let alone sleep. Doesn't help that all but one window are velux-style and too heavy for me to close. When it's this hot though sleep is impossible so I've just sat up all night with 2 fans on me just to move the air a bit.

redandwhite1 · 19/07/2021 07:21

God yes!

Our bedroom window is only shut in the winter months but while it's hot all upstairs windows are open

properg · 19/07/2021 07:26

Basically a few experiences through my life have left me frit to even leave a room with an open window, let alone sleep.

That's understandable & I wouldn't feel comfortable having a huge big window open that someone could easily enter through so window shape & style is really important to me 😆

Theoldwoman · 19/07/2021 07:31

Absolutely, all year round. Can't sleep properly without a bit of fresh air.

Mandalay246 · 19/07/2021 07:36

I can’t sleep with the window closed - I don’t know how anyone can!!
Mine are open in the depth of winter

Mine too.

MirandaMarple · 19/07/2021 07:39

Yes, upstairs. My bedroom one all year round.

During this hot weather though I open all windows early then close them before it heats up and draw all curtains to keep sunlight and hot air out.

HarrisMcCoo · 19/07/2021 07:41

Upstairs ones. No. Hay fever gets aggravated by having them open during the night.

YanTanTethera123 · 19/07/2021 07:43

Yes, always have windows open but I live in a very quiet rural estate , and the likelihood of a break in is very low. Ddog would put any burglar off and DH is up all hours of the night.

Breathmiller · 19/07/2021 07:46

I'm envious of all the window openers. I would like to.
But we do have a bat colony in our row of farm houses. And as much as I love seeing them flitting about outside I can't cope with them inside. Apparently it's a primal fear. It's the fast flapping in an emclosed space.

I do keep thinking that the moths will only come in if the lights are on but they are huge here and bash really loudly against the window even with the lights are off. So then I think they will come in.

When we bought the house the previous owners did say they didn't open the windows at night because the bats came in.

I will look at nets or screens again. My windows openin the way though so i wonder if they will fit. Worth a try though.

I might look again

AlwaysLatte · 19/07/2021 07:47

All the upstairs ones, yes.
