🎵 Every day I hear a different story
People sayin' that you’re no good for me
Saw your lover with another
And she’s making a fool of you, oh

🎵 If you love me baby, you'd deny it
But you laugh and tell me I should try it
Tell me I’m a baby, and I don't understand

Go Wham!

I am in a pub and it's normal woo hooo. Ordered at the bar. No masks 100%.

It's so bloody good Grin

Yeah there is a one way system which no one is observing Wink

BogRollBOGOF · 13/08/2021 23:22

I've not done a pub since restrictions eased last month. We tend to go for bar meals anyway so that might be a bit less obvious.

We did an outdoors activity today and that was totally normal and so fun it would probably take out 5 grannies each Grin

My gym is about the only place I've been to that's normal. I went to Aldi last night and I'd say there's 90% mask compliance still, I thought it'd be less.

My friend's DD has Covid, and her partner has to isolate even though he'd not been with his DD for a few days before as he works very long hours, and she'd been at her boyfriend's, and he works outside and on his own. Obviously I can see the point of him isolating, but he's much more likely to get Covid now he's stuck in the house with her, it's a good example of one way that lockdowns can increase the spread, though he's allowed out on Monday when the rules change.

justasking111 · 14/08/2021 07:42

Interesting reading in the trade press that many establishments don't want you at the bar again and prefer you to sit down apparently you spend more Smile

It's occured to me before that isolation can potentially increase exposure by restricting people to the highest risk environment. It's pretty daft in this particular case to do a couple of days token isolation increasing exposure and then be released from it anyway.

Scrapping the contact isolations eases a lot of pressure as a family. The reality is that if a child is down, we're automatically curtailing what we do anyway.

I certainly didn't drink less ordering at the bar. Bit of a sore head Grin

As a middle aged woman I love ordering at the table instead of having to stand at the bar and be ignored. Staying at your table isn't so much fun for my 18 yo though. They seemed to be constantly being thrown out of Wetherspoons for switching tables!
Taswama · 14/08/2021 12:08

My colleague who is visually impaired, certainly preferred table service as standard.

Stuffin · 14/08/2021 12:24

I think table service worked well when there wasn't many people in the pub and everyone sat down. I got served a lot quicker at the bar than I would have at a table yesterday.

I do think things are getting better. Just been in a large appliance store and no one batted an eyelid at both of us walking in without masks.

I have never been terribly sociable but it's noticeable how it is nice to have normal human contact without barriers between people (apart from those that still want them as I keep my distance from masked people as courtesy).

ISaySteadyOn · 14/08/2021 16:01

That's a good idea.

Someone stole my sweetcorn plant last night. I had worked really hard to grow it so I am very unhappy. And I was excited to eat corn I had grown. But I should have an amusing cucumber as soon as it ripens at least. Unless someone steals that too.

And I am so bored with my local area. There is nowhere to go and, with my lot, prebooking is a no go anyway.

OTOH, I cleared a bookshelf and reread some thrillers that I had forgotten that I loved. The Girl on the Train (Def a book to read while travelling, but a v good one for that purpose) and an old Elizabeth George novel Playing for the Ashes

@flower11 hope the assessment went ok.

"What do you all keep in your freezers that helps you?"

Ice cream!

Bags of frozen sliced peppers; stir fry veg mix; chips; emergency pizzas, cauliflower cheese bags; usual frozen veg; vodka; chicken breasts; part bake bread; tubs of homemade soup.

As I’m hungover, I also wish I kept square sausage, haggis and black pudding 😳

I do but haggis comes and goes purchase wise. Lorne sausage thanks to Iceland
WouldBeGood · 15/08/2021 21:29

Wise choices @justasking111! I had to go out to a granny cafe for a roll and chips 😂

justasking111 · 15/08/2021 22:54

Hopefully you're feeling better tonight

Just found out that no links to sites discussing the consequences of lockdowns allowed. Even the leftie one.

MercyBooth · 15/08/2021 23:23

Isolation in the UK isnt working partly because of the housing in this country. People in overcrowded homes and squashed together in flats.
And the flats issue is why people are getting pinged because their neighbour has Covid.

That’s a strange sort of censorship. It underlines the use of social media as a powerful weapon in propaganda and strengthens the argument that there are shills active on influential sites such as mumsnet.

I had a great weekend. A wedding which had a buffet and an outdoor 80s gig which was mostly normal. Great to see people doing what they love.

Also avoided media and the sudden shift from 24 hr covid headlines to 24 hr Taliban headlines is quite jarring. I wonder what is behind the shift? (I’m not saying the situation in Afghanistan is t terrible, just wondering why it is suddenly the only news story? Is it being seen as an opportunity to change the covid narrative?)

BogRollBOGOF · 16/08/2021 18:23

There has been more "normal news" creeping back.

The return of the Taliban is appalling and it's horrendous the amount of suffering on all sides trying to oust them over the past 20 years will be undone so easily.

Taswama · 16/08/2021 19:04

What is a 'shill' @Worldgonecrazy ?

smallandimperfectlyformed · 16/08/2021 20:07

I am glad that there is much more talk about Afghanistan than there is of Covid-19. That subject has dominated our media for far too long- I am not saying that it shouldn't have been reported on but as I think everyone on this thread agrees, there's been a disproportionate reaction to it. Personally I am quite saddened by how little there seems to have been said about Haiti, although I haven't read much either.

Worldgonecrazy · 16/08/2021 20:35

@Taswama

What is a 'shill' *@Worldgonecrazy* ?
A plant or stoog, in social media terms it is a reference to posts planted to sway public opinion.
BogRollBOGOF · 17/08/2021 21:33

I hadn't heard of "shrills" until the past year but I tend to stick to MN and the more personal types of SM rather than the likes of Twitter. I've tended to swerve a lot of political content on MN threads at times like elections. I'm certainly not apathetic, but I don't keep up well with the depth of minutae that clusters of posters go into. Certain parties represent themselves more thoroughly on SM too so it's not the most rounded discussion to follow either.

It's felt like flipping autumn today. CBA with the continued palaver of trying to work out indoor entertainments for the holidays and it's not inviting doing casual stuff outdoors.
