Supermarket delivery substitutions

I ordered spelt bread. I have received a big bag of rabbit and guinea pig feed. I do not have a rabbit or a guinea pig. I now don't have any bread either.

What bizarre substitutions have you had?

@Soubriquet

I’m a shopper and I would disgusted with these. The handsets occasionally gives stupid subs, but you are supposed to engage your brain and choose something suitable

I mean, I once read someone who ordered a dinner set, and received a play doh set instead Hmm

How does anyone see that on their handset and go, “yes, play doh will be a good sub” Hmm

I once had an eyeliner that someone wanted that wasn’t available. The handset told me to give them an avocado….I chose to give them another brand of eyeliner

Bloody hell! Who programs the handsets? If they're actually suggestions given to the shoppers, the supermarkets are doing it deliberately Confused I absolutely get that brains should be engaged, but why have a suggested sub given to them at all if they're so bizarrely inappropriate?
Soubriquet · 16/07/2021 12:15

Occasionally the programming on the handsets go a bit nuts

We are supposed to flag this up with the managers when this happens, so it doesn’t happen again.

We are always told, make sure you are sensible with your subs and you can override the handset if we need to

These are hilarious.

The worst I've had is 6 bottles of milk (1 pint) rather than 1 bottle of milk (6 pints)

Aerish · 16/07/2021 12:22

I ordered 2 big bags of Good boy chicken twist treats for our dog and Tesco sent a box of 100 puppy pads.
She was not a happy puppy.
I was told both cost £10 and were the same brand which is why they said it got subbed.

chasingmytail4 · 16/07/2021 12:30

Not a substitution, but I ordered custard tarts last week. The order pointed out that the sell by date was the same day, but rather than disappoint me, I was getting them for free. Like a custard tart is going to last longer than a day in this house. Grin

I’ve done that…if a customer wants 6 pints of milk and there are no 6 pinters, you mix up what you have to get the same amount. In the same type. So no mixing semi and whole mix for example

My friend worked as a deliver picker in one of the supermarkets while at uni.
They would love it when something was out of stock. They always subbed value brand with the most expensive, top range luxury if they could.
Maybe some people are more tempted to be daft just for fun!

TheFlis12345 · 16/07/2021 12:37

Frozen chips in place of ice cubes! I did not put them in my G&T.

PattyPan · 16/07/2021 12:39

@Soubriquet is that why I didn’t get a sub for milk, since I ordered 1 pint? They wouldn’t want to give me semi instead of whole etc?

FlyingBattie · 16/07/2021 12:40

Soubriquet is it automatic sub suggestions now? My friend worked a picker in the 10's, and they could pick their own subs (they would need to be approved, though and similar to the out of stock item- so eg value brand sausages could be subbed with Richmonds but not with, eg vegetables!)
It it's automated, then I suppose it's all down to machines now!

StressyMcStressFace · 16/07/2021 12:44

I ordered Earphones and got a punnet of raspberries Confused

UserName9999 · 16/07/2021 12:45

Ordered size 5 nappies, got size 1…

IntermittentParps · 16/07/2021 12:50

I ordered salted peanuts and got a bottle of bleach
Cannot work out the link there...

I've never got a weird sub. I'm missing out.
I did though once (mean to) order a six-pack of bottles of 2-litre mineral water. Had in fact ordered the little ones. Got home to see them sitting tinily in the middle of the kitchen floor. It was like the Stonehenge scene in Spinal Tap.

Yes and no.

It will give you suggestions of what to pick. If you don’t agree with those and you pick you own, it will come up with “are you sure you wish to sub X for Y” and will state which category each item is from.

You then either cancel, because you’ve seen something better, or confirm it.

I bet I know what happened there!

Did you order a brand of ear phones called raspberry or something like that?

If the picker hasn’t got the full item description( or a handy picture) they would assume you wanted raspberries
@Soubriquet is that why I didn’t get a sub for milk, since I ordered 1 pint? They wouldn’t want to give me semi instead of whole etc?
More than likely

People usually aren’t happy if their whole milk gets subbed with semi skimmed, so it’s either sub for size or no sub at all

But there’s usually something! Even if you go for cravendale

Uramaki · 16/07/2021 12:57

@Redglitter

Ordered tiger bread. Got a large box of Maltesers 🙄
Bizarre!
WoMandalorian · 16/07/2021 13:00

Ordered hair conditioner but as that specific bottle wasn't available I got a bottle of shampoo instead 🤔 anyway it was then that I turned subs off 😅

Love this! What is marmite dynamite though?!
Boodah · 16/07/2021 13:05

I ordered apple cider vinegar

I received gluten free Pringles

lovablequalities · 16/07/2021 13:06

My sil ordered a dog teddy for a new baby and they subbed dog poo bags. £10 worth. Also she'd had it delivered to the family so the new parents were v perplexed. You try to do a nice thing and you just get thwarted by algorithms. Grin

PattyPan · 16/07/2021 13:08

Yeah I get that @Soubriquet, people are very attached to their preferred type of milk! I just figured at least give me the opportunity to get a sub even if I turn it down

I ordered 12 meringue nests which were substituted with 12 of the exact same meringue nests!
