I ordered spelt bread. I have received a big bag of rabbit and guinea pig feed. I do not have a rabbit or a guinea pig. I now don't have any bread either.

What bizarre substitutions have you had?

These are hilarious. I should start online shopping just for this 😊

AliceSprings123 · 16/07/2021 00:53

Last shopping day before Christmas one year and cooking for a houseful, ordered a kilo of sprouts - got ONE sprout. It had the sticker price glued onto it. 5p they charged meGrin

I'm not sure why Aldi appear unable to substitute the houmous I've ordered for another kind, in the click and collect order, I just get "there were no suitable substitutions". I regularly order a jalapeno one and a red pepper one, and would be fine with two red peppers if the jalapeno ran out, but apparently this is beyond the wit of man, or algorithim. The odd thing is, the stuff is packed in store and I have been in to find the items available on the shelves also! It's a good service really and there are very few and no daft substitutions, so this is a minor quibble, but still I do wonder what is going on there.

Ordered Red magazine.

Received Red tissue paper.

JustLyra · 16/07/2021 08:40

I got dog food as a sub for cat food once. The driver was at great lengths to say he hadn’t picked the order.

SpamandSparkle · 16/07/2021 08:47

Ordered breadcrumbs - got mayonnaise 🤷‍♀️

H1978 · 16/07/2021 09:12

I feel disappointed I’ve never had an odd substitution 😕

FuckingFabulous · 16/07/2021 09:14

I ordered two boxes of Christmas crackers and got two packets of jacobs cream crackers.

sueelleker · 16/07/2021 10:31

@TheBairnsMaw

I ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc once and it was substituted with milk.
Well, they were both white...
Roselilly36 · 16/07/2021 10:37

Got fishfingers as a substitute for carrots once.

MiloAndEddie · 16/07/2021 10:39

I got cream crackers as a sub for prawn crackers once.

I’ve also had the ‘no suitable subs’ thing when the generic whole meal bread is ordered wasn’t in stock

VariantL1130 · 16/07/2021 10:40

Ordered frozen stir fry veg. Received a fresh turnip.

AlfonsoTheMango · 16/07/2021 10:40

I love this thread - particularly the loose octopus.

Overthinker84 · 16/07/2021 10:41

@girlmama32

Ordered a 12 pack of toilet rolls, got a single banana, just one Smile
This is the funniest one I have ever seen! Grin
PattyPan · 16/07/2021 11:18

I ordered sundried tomatoes and got cocktail gherkins Confused

scottmichael · 16/07/2021 11:21

I feel like I'm missing out. They usually just cancel the item rather than substitute at the Asda I order from.

PattyPan · 16/07/2021 11:23

I have also had no subs available for bread and milk which I struggled to believe

Penville · 16/07/2021 11:39

Ordered frozen peas and got a can of pease pudding 🙂

BrownEyedGirl80 · 16/07/2021 11:41

I'd love the chance to have weird subs ours just says not available they don't even make the effort to sub

Purplecatshopaholic · 16/07/2021 11:43

Gutted I never get weird subs. I would love an octopus!

Soubriquet · 16/07/2021 11:44

I’m a shopper and I would disgusted with these. The handsets occasionally gives stupid subs, but you are supposed to engage your brain and choose something suitable

I mean, I once read someone who ordered a dinner set, and received a play doh set instead Hmm

How does anyone see that on their handset and go, “yes, play doh will be a good sub” Hmm

I once had an eyeliner that someone wanted that wasn’t available. The handset told me to give them an avocado….I chose to give them another brand of eyeliner

Soubriquet · 16/07/2021 11:48

We aren’t allowed to do no alternative subs unless there absolutely 100% not an alternative product and we need permission from the manager to do so.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 16/07/2021 11:52

As an online picker I am also wondering how some of these subs happened. Some I get, we mainly use location code to pick items, which is fine until nightshift re-organise the shelves and the locations don't get updated quick enough then we have to use the descriptions, which are very limited on our handsets. I can understand the cherries for cherry tomatoes as the handset probably missed out the word tomatoes and likely just said cherry 250g, the red magazine and tissue paper may well have been a similar issue.
Some of the descriptions I have had to work out include "purple floral" which turned out to be a birthday card - the system gave me neither the word birthday or card, another was "double walled stain" that turned out to be a stainless steel cafetiere, the system not bothering with the most important word.
Hopefully I haven't sent out too many weird subs, if I have, sorry.

Soubriquet · 16/07/2021 12:00

Ooo we get a picture if we press item info Grin

Can’t confuse cherries and cherry tomatoes with the picture

BarefootHippieChick · 16/07/2021 12:08

cheesecake that's really interesting, I always wondered why some subs were just totally bizarre. Don't recall any daft ones here but I like Tesco because they more often than not substitute you with something much better and more expensive for the same price 😁
