Which fun and completely impractical car?

After years of sensible family cars, now DC have cars of their own, I was thinking I might treat myself to something really stupid Grin

I was along the lines of an MX5, but DS1 has told me I can't have a middle aged mum car and shall be ignored

What would you go for for your midlife crisis car? Is there something fun that's a little less midlife crisis?

I literally just picked up my birthday present car on Saturday - MX5 Totally impractical for anyone but me but I've spent 20 years driving 'mum' cars and at almost 40 it's time for a me car Grin One child can already drive, the next will be learning after Christmas so there's plenty of normal cars in the house Honestly but yourself something that gives you joy ❤️ the last few years have shown we should be kind to ourselves

I have an MX5 and love it, brilliant fun to drive. I love swooshing around the country lanes, headscarf and sunglasses with the roof down. They can be dead cheap too, mine is worth bugger all really but has been really reliable and looks great. I had a Cooper S but the cost nearly broke me ( insurance, endless trips to the petrol station, perpetual flat tyres). It was super fast and a laugh but not worth the £££s.
I'd love a Boxter but can't really afford it and have no off street parking Sad

I had a copen daihatsu I loved it but not practical at all ! Back in a mini I love it x

CoffeethenCrochet · 23/06/2021 21:21

Another vote for Tesla Model 3. Once you've test driven one, you won't want anything else Grin

Buggerthebotox · 24/06/2021 12:15

@beccy11 - phwoarr!!

Who needs practical?

Hen2018 · 24/06/2021 13:56

A Gregori or a Caterham 7.

Unfortunately I’m overpaying my mortgage instead.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 24/06/2021 14:10

I’ve had a Mini Cooper S convertible
Two Audi TT roadsters
A Mazda MX5.

The most fun was the Mazda. It stuck to the road and was just a fun car.
The Mini was cramped and uncomfortable, even after I replaced the run flat tyres.
The Audis are great, but you do suffer from envious male syndrome, when every man tries to overtake, accelerate away at lights, cut you up and generally be a pain in the arse.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 24/06/2021 21:42

I said a Mini Cooper upthread but if I was getting a completely impractical car I’d go Nissan 370Z

hilariousnamehere · 24/06/2021 21:53

Toyota MR2 - best car ever! I had mine from 23 to 32 and she made me happy every single day. And that's far too young for a midlife crisis so you're perfectly safe

MissCruellaDeVil · 24/06/2021 22:02

I have a huge Range Rover now to fit the kids in, but thinking of getting an Audi TT as a second car (just for me) as sometimes it's just too big!

Longdistance · 24/06/2021 22:06

I’ve got a Mercedes coupe, alas it is a 5 seater and I have to drive little beasts in my car screaming ‘mummy put it in sports mode!’ They’re a bad influence on mummy 🤷🏼‍♀️

BluTangClan · 24/06/2021 22:34

Smart Roadster.

Kezzie200 · 24/06/2021 23:03

I did this!

I have an MX5.

Not entirely impractical (if you have a second car in the household). Loads of fun, we take her on picnics on the moors. Cheapish on fuel. Great spec. Small to park. Enough room for a small shop, two small holdalls for short breaks. Conversation starter.

We have an old estate car too, and it suits us perfectly, but it would be difficult to live with only the MX5.

shetlandponies · 24/06/2021 23:08

I just sold a 90s MR2 roadster in bright green ! It was my absolute pride and joy but had to go as was starting to be a money pit

This thread is making me miss it 😭

shetlandponies · 24/06/2021 23:09

@PatriciaHolm

I had a Porsche Boxster for a bit. Loved it. I would love a Lotus Elise!
Oh god I want a Boxster so badly

Are they really high maintenance?

Kezzie200 · 24/06/2021 23:12

Here's mine, on a picnic!

OhToBeASeahorse · 24/06/2021 23:16

We sold our MX-5 about 4 years ago.

We're still not over it so buying another! The kids can go in the Skoda Kodiaq and the Mazda can be for fun stuff. I cannot tell you how excited I am. Get it - you wont ever be sorry.

justasking111 · 24/06/2021 23:20

I saw a scarlet MR2 yesterday, looking like new haven't driven one for 30 years. That was a fun ride
