Which fun and completely impractical car?

After years of sensible family cars, now DC have cars of their own, I was thinking I might treat myself to something really stupid Grin

I was along the lines of an MX5, but DS1 has told me I can't have a middle aged mum car and shall be ignored

What would you go for for your midlife crisis car? Is there something fun that's a little less midlife crisis?

When I first said I was considering a 2 seater, DS thought I meant a Smart and said he'd move out if that was parked on the drive. So there's a plan...

@Watto1 I’ve got a Smart For Two convertible and absolutely love it. Wanted one for years and don’t regret it one bit. Me and my dog pottering around with the roof down in the sunshine! Absolute bliss Smile

Touloser · 23/06/2021 19:20

If you like the mx5, what about the abarth spider. It has a similar look but I think a bit more modern/sporty, great fun to drive, and plenty available at sub 20k.

ImbarbaraB · 23/06/2021 19:22

Mustang or a Z4M

Got to be something with a big engine to enjoy whilst I can before it’s all outlawed

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/06/2021 19:31

I considered a Smart, but I love the Mini more.
I love small cars, I used to have a Toyota IQ but they don't make them anymore.

Mixitupalot · 23/06/2021 19:43

I have a mini coupe, 2 seats and 2ltrs and I am a happy girl! Love it and can’t see myself changing for a long time.

PatriciaHolm · 23/06/2021 19:49

I had a Porsche Boxster for a bit. Loved it.
I would love a Lotus Elise!

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/06/2021 19:51

Mixitupalot
They don't make them anymore either, as I wanted one.

Ethelswith · 23/06/2021 19:52

Caterham 7

GandTisgoodforme · 23/06/2021 19:56

Abarth 595 competizione

LlamaofDrama · 23/06/2021 19:57

I had an Mx5 in my 20s. Loved it so much. It was the best fun to drive (but not in snow) and totally reliable. I want another one some day.

Twospaniels · 23/06/2021 20:00

Treated ourselves to a Mercedes E class convertible a few months ago. Absolutely love it.

Would have gone for a two seater but I do go out with my daughters still (in their twenties) so opted for 4 seats.

Test drive everything within your budget. If it’s convertible then practice putting the hood up and down.

We have used the car a lot with the top down and are plenty warm enough with the air scarf.

Enjoy whatever you choose

When my DC were smaller I had a Fiat 500, and I loved it so much. I was quite cross with DS when he got too tall to be comfortable in the back. It was an automatic and it had red leather seats with cream piping. I'm hoping to get another one when the DC leave home (or at least get old enough to drive themselves).

Tequilamockinbird · 23/06/2021 20:09

I almost bought this one (Jaguar) last year. And now wish I'd ignored DH telling me it wasn't practical, and just done it ☹️

Which fun and completely impractical car?
carolinesbaby · 23/06/2021 20:09

@Mogloveseggs

For me it would be a land rover defender Or a mustang Grin
Love my Defender!
Buggerthebotox · 23/06/2021 20:12

That Jag is beautiful.

Seventimesaday · 23/06/2021 20:14

Decided I should be practical and sold my MX5. Two year later I bought another because I missed it so much. A few years later came a long hard Winter so I sold again.
We now have an Audi TT just as a ‘toy’ so it only really goes out in good weather.
I love sporty cars, but have a small budget really, so can’t go too wild!

TheNestedIf · 23/06/2021 20:25

Ignore DS1. Definitely get an MX-5.

I don't like driving. I do like driving my MX-5. Third gear, when it's itching to really go, is my favourite.

Buggerthebotox · 23/06/2021 20:29

Lexus 430 is a pretty little convertible? Big engine too.

Buggerthebotox · 23/06/2021 20:31

Sorry for derail but I'm very interested to know how Mazda Mx5 owners' knees cope? Smile

southernerer · 23/06/2021 20:31

Audi TT, I had one pre children and was such a fun little car to drive

wonkylegs · 23/06/2021 20:32

My dad has had a run of mx5s he loves them. He got his first one when my brother moved out.

I still have smallish kids so properly fun cars are out for me but my Jaguar iPace is an awful lot of fun to drive so maybe look at some of the more exciting electric cars - it's worth a test drive at least.

FixTheBone · 23/06/2021 20:32

What's your budget?

I'm putting a word in for a Tesla model 3.

Fun AND practical (which doesn't make it any less fun)

All the toys, ridiculous party tricks from customisable horn to a face melting 0-60.

aggathapanthus · 23/06/2021 20:34

I want Inspector Morse’s Jaguar. In fact, I will have it in about 5 years Smile

TheNestedIf · 23/06/2021 20:35

@Buggerthebotox Being 5ft 2" helps. Although, apparently, Clarkson is a big fan of the MX-5 and he's 6ft 4".
