Which fun and completely impractical car?

After years of sensible family cars, now DC have cars of their own, I was thinking I might treat myself to something really stupid Grin

I was along the lines of an MX5, but DS1 has told me I can't have a middle aged mum car and shall be ignored

What would you go for for your midlife crisis car? Is there something fun that's a little less midlife crisis?

Not quite the same but as a family of 6, we have always had 7 seaters- Be it MPV or SUV.
My beloved SUV is no longer (engine faliure still on finance🤦‍♀️) ..and with eldest DC now driving own car and DH with a work van, I got an Audi A3..., v.impractical for my job role and small in the back with 2 car seats (DC 2 is a teen and up front)
BUT I love it!!!!!

av3nturin3 · 24/06/2021 23:25

I’d get a zippy BMW, i series. Grips the road, awesome intuitive steering, lots of cool gadgets, beautiful wood-grained interior.

scrivette · 24/06/2021 23:27

Nissan GTR - they are soooo expensive now though. I should have got one when they first came out. My heart skips a beat when I see one.

Faithtrusts · 24/06/2021 23:28

I've got an mx5, got the roof slashed at my old house, so my dad took him in. He kept it for me for two years til I moved house... he knew I'd be sad to part with it.

Reunited now and I love driving it. No good in snow, but scary on very wet roads (it likes to go sideways) but it's the best car ever. I've had it for near ten years now, and yes I'm starting to grumble when rolling out of it ( not as much as my mum does though!) but I'm not ready to give him up yet.

Nearly got an mr2 but mx5 won out on boot space front.

Keepyourdistance000 · 24/06/2021 23:32

Definitely an MX5 or TT convertible. Possibly even an A5 convertible if you want more than 2 seats.

Dontate · 24/06/2021 23:35

I have an Audi TT and I love it. It’s quite old (although I’ve only had it for 4 years) and it’s never given me a minute’s trouble. Hope I haven’t jinxed things by saying that!

Mother87 · 24/06/2021 23:36

Nissan Figaro... One day soon hopefullyGrin

Unescorted · 24/06/2021 23:41

1978 Alfa Spider. In red or baby shit green. Cool as ..

alloutofcareunits · 24/06/2021 23:41

@beccy11 I have the same car! Absolutely love my MX5, roof down in summer heated seats in winter, gorgeous colour. Similar to others, my DD now has her own car DH has a bigger car so for once I bought exactly what I wanted with no one else to consider. No problems with my knees and I'm mid 50s, my 79 year old mother also gets in and out fine and she's had a knee replacement. We had a Porsche Boxster a few years ago but I actually prefer the MX5

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 24/06/2021 23:44

@Mother87

Nissan Figaro... One day soon hopefullyGrin
Me too. I had one, the Lapis colour, twenty years ago. But once the DDs came along it wa son longer practical - and remains not practical! Once they’re both driving themselves around (and now I can afford to also have a proper sized car in addition) I will get one again. Beige this time, I think it’s called Topaz. Wink
alloutofcareunits · 24/06/2021 23:46

@shetlandponies yes the Boxster was very expensive to maintain, I'm sure the brake discs cost over £1000 to replace and that was over 10 years ago, one of the reasons we got rid. It also did around 25mpg as it was the 3.2S model - great fun though Smile

lborgia · 25/06/2021 01:39

@Kezzie200 - oh she's beautiful!

I will always need easier/ higher seat, so will never be able to get an mx5 now but they're lovely.

I'm hankering after an ipace at the moment, but where I live they are double the price of the UK. @wonkylegs - tell me about yours, is it as lovely as I think it isGrin

lovetobeatpeace · 25/06/2021 03:53

Another one for the MX5. I'm mid 50s & on my second & it's so much fun to drive, no knee problems either! I have had a 911, jag xkr, slk but actually prefer the Mazda in many ways because it's way cheaper to run. I also had a crossfire years ago but the view out of the rear window is awful so I wouldn't go there!

Gingerodgers · 25/06/2021 04:14

I’ve just bought a Toyota 86. I absolutely love it. I mean I REALLY love it.

echt · 25/06/2021 07:07

baby shit green

That should be a Farrow and Ball colour: possibly baby shit.

PhilCornwall1 · 25/06/2021 07:29

My "daily driver" (remember those days?) is an old farts car, even has a little pocket for your pension book.

If I could buy a fun car to drive every now and then, I'd get a Triumph Stag.

Penners99 · 25/06/2021 07:41

I bought an Aerial Atom. Wild and impractical.

dubyalass · 25/06/2021 07:50

Audi TT or Alfa Romeo Giulietta/Mito/Stelvio. Completely impractical as I have a kayak so need roof bars but damn I'm tempted.

Biking0077 · 25/06/2021 07:50

Sat in a Homebase carpark few weeks ago thinking core that’s a lovely car…then googled the price Shock

Audi R8. So that’s my lottery win car Grin

Biking0077 · 25/06/2021 07:57

Or I’d settle for an Audi TT once the kids are grown up

MirandaMarple · 25/06/2021 08:00

Mini Cooper. I've had two over the last 10 years. They put me in a good mood when I'm in them. They always look good.

Two labradors now and boring Estate car.

Damnloginpopup · 25/06/2021 08:03

I have a 1973 Triumph Spitfire. I adore it! People walking past adore it and I have so many conversations...people take pictures of it, toddlers especially love it it seems! Free road tax, very cheap insurance, no mot required ( but most people do, myself included) and it's gone up in value in the four years I've had it. 30mpg or so, roof down it's marvellous. Hardtop is necessary in winter though.

I'd buy an mx5 otherwise, they really are good.

Gavellar · 25/06/2021 08:09

I don't live in the UK. I have a dodge Challenger 6l which does about 15mpg and flies like a bird. Best midlife crisis ever Grin

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 25/06/2021 08:19

MX-5 is a bloody brilliant thing and in no way a 'middle-aged mum car'. Your DS is talking out of his bum. Grin

New, mine would probably be an MX-5 too. Or a Jaguar F-Type if I had lots of money.

Classic, it'd be Alfa Romeo Montreal every time.

Can’t afford the Aston Martin but am picking up (hopefully) my Mini Cooper tomorrow!
