Which fun and completely impractical car?

After years of sensible family cars, now DC have cars of their own, I was thinking I might treat myself to something really stupid Grin

I was along the lines of an MX5, but DS1 has told me I can't have a middle aged mum car and shall be ignored

What would you go for for your midlife crisis car? Is there something fun that's a little less midlife crisis?

We toured Northumberland and the Pennines in it when the weather was glorious earlier this month and it was brilliant. Scottish 500 next, hopefully September.

Another vote for an MX-5. I didn't get mine until I was nearly 50 (2nd hand, with the optional hard top for the winter) and I love it! Nothing else drives like it - sticks beautifully to the road when you're cornering. And having the roof down in the summer is fabulous!

Oh, and I'm nearly 5'11 with a 34" inside leg, and my knees manage fine! The only thing I would say, is that you need a sensible shoe to drive it - I can't drive mine wearing flip flops (other cars, not a problem) because there's not much room in the footwell/pedal area, so I keep a pair of ballet pumps in mine to drive in on flip-flop days!

Can I just ask a stupid question about the mx5's roof? Blush.

How does the hard top work please? Does it kinda fold into tye body of the car?

Friend swapping over in winter to hard top back in summer to the soft top

Not sure on the mx5 but to buy the hard top for the spider is about £3k.

Another vote for the Nissan 370Z. I had a 350z and it was so much fun to drive. A bit plasticky inside compared to the posher marques but a great £:fun ratio.

Kezzie200 · 27/06/2021 14:32

On the current version the soft top fold simply into the back. A passenger can do it while moving. It's literally seconds.

The current hardtop is called an RF and you need to be going very slowly or stopped for it to drop, and it drops electronically. I went to buy an RF but when down its noisy and feels more like a very large sunroof than a convertible. After test driving I immediately took my soft top out and loved it.

I have had 2 cars on which the electric soft top mechanism was the first thing to "go". It went on my Audi A5 convertible ( which was getting on a bit!) and Audi were less than interested in repairing it. They just wanted to sell me a new car. That's why I made sure I chose an MX5 with a manual soft top - less to go wrong.

NCnotmyusualone · 28/06/2021 07:37

Audi TT. I so miss mine.

bigbaggyeyes · 28/06/2021 07:39

Audi TT
MINI - this would be my fav, one of the only cars I'd take out for a drive, just to drive it because I loved it
BMW Z4

IHaveBrilloHair · 28/06/2021 16:16

I picked up my new Mini yesterday and I'm in love.
It's gorgeous 😍
V gadgety compared to my last one which was only 4 years old.
Obvs not gadgety compared to really expensive cars!

justasking111 · 28/06/2021 16:25

Friends oh has bought a BMW Mx omg he took me for a drive. 15 years old six cylinder 2 seater convertible. It's magic. Black with red seats and trim I'm in love

Wishiwasrunning2 · 28/06/2021 17:07

We've got a van for moving the family round VW Caravelle, so treated ourselves to a BMW Z4 30i, it's bonkers and so much fun!

VenusClapTrap · 28/06/2021 17:18

Nissan Figaro. I want one so badly.

wonkylegs · 28/06/2021 20:55

@lborgia I do love it, it's an amazing drive.
Unbelievably quick, and really good fun to drive especially in the countryside. It's like a rather sensible practical sports car.
I charge mine with our solar panels which is incredibly satisfying.
Very comfy and loads of room even with a gangly teenage boy in the back and a car seat.
Had a bit of range anxiety when we first got it but actually the range is fab and it charges relatively quickly so it's not been a problem.
Parking is the only let down - it's turning circle is atrocious, however I'm getting used to it and it has park assist when I'm in a car park.
