What do you resent buying?

I really need a new iron. The one I have is over 20 years old and just spits mucky water on to my clothes. I have tried descaling it, to no avail. Who the fuck wants to spend good money on an iron, though?

I also need a new mattress protector as the plasticy-rubbery stuff on the underside of ours is flaking off and its all a bit manky. And we do need one, as we live in a hot country and I'm peri-menopausal. Angry Again, though, when I think of all the fun/nice/pleasurable things I can spend my hard-earned on, somehow the mattress protector never quite makes the cut. Blush

Am I alone in this or do other people also have a growing list of un-fun things to buy?

Petrol. And it's a waste of my time as well.

FelicityBeedle · 05/06/2021 16:27

@StCharlotte that must be infuriating about the condoms!
Not even my purchase but my partner bought a big pack of expensive durex when we got together, we used a single one before we got tested and just relied on my coil. Such a waste of money

Laundry expenses - tablets, softener and stain remover.

HM Customs and Excise charges with VAT verytime I buy something from America.

Bridge tolls.

Motorway tolls.

Extra payments for some films and programmes on my streaming services.

Annual vehicle servicing and road tax.

Rainbowsew · 05/06/2021 18:48

Carrier bags.

Logo school uniform, I can afford it but resent it big style- twice the price and half the quality of high street stores. I'd make a fuss but ds would disown me for being "that parent".

doubleshotespresso · 05/06/2021 18:49

Carrier bags
Crisps
Play doh
Headbands for DD who snaps them within 5minutes

FUCKLONGCOVID · 05/06/2021 20:22

Razor blades.....how in the name of fuck are they so fucking expensive?!

Petrol. Needs must but it pains me

IceLace100 · 05/06/2021 20:39

@romdowa

Council tax is the one that gets me. Our old town was so filthy , council routinely claimed that they had no money for maintaining things yet year on year they increased the tax. I hated paying it there as we never ever seen the benefit of it, even the bin collection was hit and miss

Urgh the bloody council tax... let's pay yet more tax out of my salary that I have already been taxed on to get my bins occasionally emptied Hmm

Pearbear · 05/06/2021 21:09

Car insurance that costs me £76 a month just because of where I live. 8 years of driving and I’ve never made a claim and absolutely nothing to show for all those £76 a month payments

spacegirl123 · 07/06/2021 11:10

@Pearbear that's an insane amount!!! 😳

haymaid · 07/06/2021 11:47

Fluffymule - "TV licence. Not the cost, the mandatory nature of the charge, whether you use their service or not."

It's not mandatory. The more people that decide, "nope, not paying the BBC rip off tax anymore" , the sooner the BBC will be forced into changing the way they fund themselves pay their ridiculously overpaid presenters. I haven't paid it for years along with an increasing number of people I know. Don't miss it one iota . Can watch ITV, 4 and 5 on catchup, YouTube, Netflix and the like without the need for a licence. I'll decide what TV I pay for thank you very much rip off BBC.

For me, it's sanpro and bloody insurance. Feels like throwing money away every month!

This is the one thing I don’t mind paying. If your not seeing what the council is spending money on, half of it on social care so foster care, adult services etc and then money on education support eg transport to special needs school and homelessness, then we should thank our lucky stars.

Break down of council tax spending

Donating stuff to the PTA and then having to buy it back requiring me to scrabble around for pound coins. I would much rather set up a direct debt.

Parking Charges - I already pay income tax, council tax, car insurance, car tax and for petrol. Paying for parking (especially for parking while at work) on top of all that just seems excessive and unfair.

Bras - I have big boobs and find it impossible to get well fitting bras that fit. I don’t even know what size I am either because every brand is different and any shop I’ve been fitted in don’t stock all the sizes anyway. I think it’s ridiculous to be charged extra for the design when I don’t get to save money in other ways for being short. For example, my shoes cost the same as everyone else’s, and I don’t get to order a smaller (and therefore cheaper) portion in restaurants even though I won’t be able to eat all of the normal sized one.

Paying to pay for things - When companies/the government charge you a card fee when card is the only way to pay. Or even worse, click and collect fees.

Maternity clothes - I’ll only be able to wear them for a few months but they still cost as much as other clothes I get to wear for years.

35andThriving · 09/06/2021 13:56

Definitely agree with sanitary towels and razor blades too.

BlueLobelia · 09/06/2021 15:04

DS1's new to me school coat (£30!!!) that I bought 'second hand' but had never been used due to covid. I b ought it big as he has sensory issues and it was so soft and squishy and perfect. I was so pleased with it.

He lost it the very first day he had it. Yes it was named. No it's not in the lost property box.

TheChosenTwo · 09/06/2021 15:08

@TangledNemo that has reminded me of dh raging when he uses one of those cash points that charge you a couple of quid to draw your money out.
I mean, it’s annoying sure, but in the grand scheme of things I don’t understand his total and utter rage about it.
I still use them. He refuses. Or worse, has to use it as it’s all there is for miles around and then doesn’t stop going on about it Grin

HotChocolateLover · 09/06/2021 15:16

This one is going to make me sound like a really mean step mum but I always resent buying DSS lunch. 9/10 he has a tiny nibble and then declares he hates it/isn’t hungry/wants to go to the park etc. That’s another tenner wasted. But every time we faithfully buy something for the elusive 1/10 times when he actually eats something 😋😆🙄

FunTimes2020 · 09/06/2021 15:58

New guttering. It had to be done but what a boring way to part with a few thousand pounds Hmm

35andThriving · 10/06/2021 13:39

I don't think that makes you sound mean HotChocolateLover. I would resent paying out for food that my child left untouched too.

3CCC · 10/06/2021 14:12

Prescriptions I have to have the medication it's one for life it's not on the exempt list. £9 a pop is just a bit eurgh

Sanitary products

safariboot · 10/06/2021 15:25

Other people's addictions. It's been vape cartridges recently. In the past there's been cigarettes and even cola. And I'm the mug who has to spend my own time going online or going out.

Worriesome · 10/06/2021 15:36

Ha ha OP you remind me of me, I’ll buy a load of shite but think twice before buying something needed for the house like a mattress protector or new duvet cover. At the minute I’ve been mentally debating getting a new chandelier for the living room and a foot stool, I just can’t bring myself to make the purchases x

Worriesome · 10/06/2021 15:37

@HotChocolateLover no not mean at all, I feel that way about food too. It ain’t cheap having a meal out as it is and don’t even get me started on dessert shops x

wendywoopywoo222 · 10/06/2021 15:39

@FelicityBeedle

Knickers! I always want to buy expensive but the cost per pant puts me off so I buy cheap and regret it. They just seem so expensive for so little fabric
At least being fat I feel like I get value for money as there's tonnes in material in them.
wendywoopywoo222 · 10/06/2021 15:54

I resent all the food that my step daughters feckless boyfriend eats when he comes to our house. I work long hours to buy food while he sits on his lazy unemployed arse. I seethe a lot.
