What do you resent buying?

I really need a new iron. The one I have is over 20 years old and just spits mucky water on to my clothes. I have tried descaling it, to no avail. Who the fuck wants to spend good money on an iron, though?

I also need a new mattress protector as the plasticy-rubbery stuff on the underside of ours is flaking off and its all a bit manky. And we do need one, as we live in a hot country and I'm peri-menopausal. Angry Again, though, when I think of all the fun/nice/pleasurable things I can spend my hard-earned on, somehow the mattress protector never quite makes the cut. Blush

Am I alone in this or do other people also have a growing list of un-fun things to buy?

Oh my god, please forgive my total ignorance here, a couple of posters have said wheelchairs. I was totally and utterly of the belief that if you needed a wheelchair, you were given one Shock
My mum was when she (temporarily) needed one and I don’t know anyone else who is a permanent wheelchair user.
Fuck me, I’m flabbergasted Shock
I take back my sanpro purchasing rage and now put that into wheelchair purchasing rage Angry

I got so fed up with dirty water leaking out of steam irons, I never use the steam facility any more. I just spray/mist anything too dry with one of those spray bottles they sell for plants.

And expensive so-called non-stick frying pans, that turn out to be no better than much cheaper ones. And in the case of my current supermarket cheapie that I’ve had for a few years now, worse.

Council tax - we pay double the rate we’d have to pay in another borough barely a mile down the road.

New tyres for my car. Hate having to buy them. DH always swaps them around so that they ‘wear evenly’ which means I have to shell out for 4 of the fuckers at once. Who wants to spend £500 on 4 bits of rubber? 😡

Glasses. Hundreds of pounds for bits of plastic that stop me seeing in the rain, steam up when wearing a mask, and are generally inconvenient.

mybrainhertz · 05/06/2021 11:11

Toilet roll. It's perfectly easy to do without in our house because we have a loo hose and then you just pat dry with a small washable cloth. The others just won't do it though. We could save about £4 a week, but it's not going to happen. I feel cross every time I buy toilet roll.

Yes! Glasses and bras! Seem so small for the price! I know it’s all in the “engineering” but still.
tunnocksreturns2019 · 05/06/2021 11:21

I just bought a new bin to replace a broken one. Such an expensive thing to buy to throw rubbish in it

HooverPhobic · 05/06/2021 11:21

Wheelchairs win this thread. Plus paying for repairs on them.

peridito · 05/06/2021 11:24

@Ozymandias101 those evernew knickers I rushed off to google seem to have been discontinued.

A victim of their success maybe ? Sloggi couldn't afford them lasting forever ?

Purplecatshopaholic · 05/06/2021 11:31

Things you ‘need’ but don’t see. My boiler for one. Car MOT - in fact most things to do with having a car. Pet insurance - considering cancelling, its extortionate.

JasmineTeacup · 05/06/2021 11:31

Haircuts. I loathe everything about it and having to pay for the 'privilege' Angry I go through cycles of letting it grow for 2 or 3 years, then getting it all chopped off really short and starting again.

thismeansnothing · 05/06/2021 11:42

My inhalors. Pisses me off every time I buy one as the prescription cost has gone up again since the last time. I do use them every day but I don't go through enough of the fuckers to warrant the prepaid card. Nine quid whatever for the right to be able to breath. Bloody joke.

Couchbettato · 05/06/2021 11:43

@TheChosenTwo for fear of outing myself as a hippie, the day I ditched bras was the most liberating experience of my life.

Now the ladies aren't small things, nor perky, but I did wake up one day and think, who do I put these sweaty, uncomfortable things on for? It's certainly not me. I can't wait to get the bloody things off.

I'll go back to my commune now.

Luxembourgmama · 05/06/2021 11:49

Cars they are so joyless yet expensive

Imnothereforthedrama · 05/06/2021 12:00

Bras as well yes you can get some lovely ones but if your big bust like me to find a my size / pretty / comfortable you have to pay £££ . A decent sports bra too is expensive for big bust of you don’t want them jiggling about .

Fluffymule · 05/06/2021 12:24

TV Licence.

Not the cost, the mandatory nature of the charge, whether you use the service or not. It's like having to pay M&S if you only ever want to shop at John Lewis.

cauliflowersqueeze · 05/06/2021 12:29

@Bloodybridget

Printer ink. Can't imagine why it's so expensive.
Absolutely!! It’s more expensive than champagne apparently!
StarryStarrySocks · 05/06/2021 12:32

Mostly, I resent the time I'm expected to waste doing things nobody expects from a man. They don't paint their faces. They don't bother coloring their hair. They never worry if their shoes match their bag, or if the shoe/bag combo matches their outfit.

But that's your choice - I'm a woman and I don't do any of this. My current handbag cost six quid from Lidl. It does match my trainers though. Grin

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/06/2021 12:34

Bin bags... I need extra strong drawstring ones as I can't tie them
Literally throwing money away

Squirrel26 · 05/06/2021 12:36

Scaffolding. I had some repairs done to my roof that took about 2 hours and half of the cost was the fucking scaffolding. I know it was essential to actually get to the bit that needed repairing, but still…could they not have just gone up a ladder and leaned over?

I used to really resent the car tax, but my current car is £20 a year, which I find just about acceptable.

ThatsNotMyReindeer · 05/06/2021 13:14

Anything for myself, and not even expensive things - clothes, underwear, moustache waxing, shoes, hair cuts etc.
Yet don't think twice about buying organic cotton clothes for DS to get covered in mud and food stains. He's mainly dressed in Frugi, Villervalla, Kite etc. whilst I wear clothes older than he is.

Car MOT. Mainly because it has to be done and I have to pay whatever the repairs cost, as my car still has the life in it, but is in that middle ground where it wouldn't sell for much due to high mileage, and it's too expensive to buy a new one. Worst day of my year every year!

Curtains. Who even knew they were so expensive?!

catsareme14 · 05/06/2021 14:14

Tyres & umbrellas

Lazydaz · 05/06/2021 14:19

Ive had my womb lazered l, barley have periods now, just use period pants for a day or two.

StCharlotte · 05/06/2021 14:54

I resent every penny I ever spent on tampons or the like, considering that the event itself is totally unnecessary.

Me too. Even more galling when it turns you were infertile all along.

See also condoms.

OMG! ShockThis'll sound really thick, but I actually never thought of that and the iron works fine without the steam function. Thank you so much!!! SmileSmileSmile
