What do you resent buying?

I really need a new iron. The one I have is over 20 years old and just spits mucky water on to my clothes. I have tried descaling it, to no avail. Who the fuck wants to spend good money on an iron, though?

I also need a new mattress protector as the plasticy-rubbery stuff on the underside of ours is flaking off and its all a bit manky. And we do need one, as we live in a hot country and I'm peri-menopausal. Angry Again, though, when I think of all the fun/nice/pleasurable things I can spend my hard-earned on, somehow the mattress protector never quite makes the cut. Blush

Am I alone in this or do other people also have a growing list of un-fun things to buy?

A spiralizer. It sits in the kitchen cupboard taunting me with its bulky awkwardness and shiny newness. It was going to change my life but now not even any of my Facebook friends wants this game changer of a gadget for free!

gluenotsoup · 05/06/2021 09:08

Delivery charges. If I’ve spent a lot of money on something i really resent that I then have to pay just to get it home if there is no way you can actually just pick it up and put it in the car.... 🤯

Wildweather · 05/06/2021 09:12

The bloody dentist. Paying for fear, pain and misery!

I was okay until I started reading this thread and now find I am resenting a lot of purchases Grin

PuppyMonkey · 05/06/2021 09:13

The solution to not having to buy a new iron is to not do any more ironing again ever. Grin

I have to get the dog ridiculously expensive food otherwise he gets an upset tummy, and I really really resent that.

@eatitgood

The Pill. Costs me $90. All because otherwise I flood. If men had periods the pill would be free, or they'd have some cure for awful periods.
@eatitgood www.google.com/amp/s/www.simplehealth.com/%3famp=1 might be a better option for you?
AngeloMysterioso · 05/06/2021 09:16

Also uni tuition fees. A huge thanks to the generation before mine for pulling that ladder up behind them in quite spectacular fashion... minimum £27k of debt for something they got for free!

ssd · 05/06/2021 09:17

I resent buying everything. I hate spending money.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 05/06/2021 09:18

My flat. I was under the impression I'd actually own the place. Turns out it's just a really long rental for 100 or so years and full of extra fees and charges for seemingly nothing. To top it off I tried to sell it and no one would even come and look at it as they all want outdoor space and no one wants a central location with good transport links this side of Covid they want the countryside.

SquirrelFan · 05/06/2021 09:25

Expensive, specific school uniform only available at one shop where the permanent staff are really rude.
Iron, yes I recently bought a new one and it seems to only have one setting - superhot-which is great for cotton tablecloths but melted my favourite work blouse.
Shoes that feel great in the shop but cut my feet to ribbons in 1/2 an hour of wearing.

My life!!!
I set myself challenges to see how long I can make the tenner in my purse last.
I do have it easy because all the bills are on dd, dh usually fuels my car and he does the food shop so I have no need to spend money much. It was, of course much easier in 'lockdown' and the longest I lasted was nearly 2 months without breaking it!😂
However I have stopped a lot of incidental spending for rhe sake of it.

CatherineCawood · 05/06/2021 09:29

Another hater of buying petrol here. I totally resent it! I have no idea why it just winds me up!

35andThriving · 05/06/2021 09:34

A wheelchair

As a wheelchair user, I still find them boring. It doesn't matter what style or colour it comes in I still hate spending money on it.

LovelyGirlCompetition · 05/06/2021 09:36

Car tax has always been my worst. All that money for a little round piece of paper....I don't know how I feel now you don't even get that!

tentosix · 05/06/2021 09:43

Stuff for disabled DS. Everything cost 100 times more than you think. Wheelchair £7K.

35andThriving · 05/06/2021 09:45

Tv license

IDontDrinkTea · 05/06/2021 09:46

Work shoes. I hate having to buy hideous ugly shoes with my own money because that’s what is the uniform. Especially when I know someone is going to vomit/bleed/some other bodily function all over them at some point anyway (I work for the nhs, it’s an occupational hazard…)

I hate buying clothes for my dd to wear to nursery. They let them eat and paint without putting on aprons so they end up stained in no time. Apparently they can’t put aprons on them because of covid

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 05/06/2021 09:47

I can’t think of anything bar the TV licence and not having a say in how taxes are spent.

35andThriving · 05/06/2021 09:51

Also hate being asked for charitable donations, on non-uniform days etc, for charities I wouldn't choose to give money to usually. I don't have a problem with donating money in general but I like to choose who I support.

Hallyup6 · 05/06/2021 09:55

Another one for tampons/pads. I have 5 daughters...

Chickychickydodah · 05/06/2021 09:55

Underwear and clothes, I’m over weight, ugly and look hideous in everything( yes I’m dieting and have lost 2 stones already)

spacegirl123 · 05/06/2021 09:57

Husband is insisting we buy a new rotary washing line because the one we have is "crap". There's literally nothing wrong with it he's just got this weird fixation. All washing lines are exactly the same and do the same thing, but he has just made up his mind. I told him just to do what he wants but it's such a waste of £30 and guaranteed the new line will be just as "crap". He's a bloody weirdo sometimes.

35andThriving · 05/06/2021 10:01

Also hate tipping. If you want more money just charge more, then we'll all know where we stand.

I don't like being in rounds either, as I'm not too fussed about alcohol but it's not worth being in a round where everyone else is drinking alcohol and you're just drinking coke.

LysistrataVickers · 05/06/2021 10:04

Bras. Fucking uncomfortable and expensive for the large of nork. Unfortunately I have to wear them or I'd be tucking my boobs in my knickers.

Lgz11 · 05/06/2021 10:18

@Ozymandias101

I resent every penny I ever spent on tampons or the like, considering that the event itself is totally unnecessary.

I resent money spent on clothes without pockets, when the same item cut for a man DOES have pockets. And if pockets are present in the female tailored version, I'm usually infuriated by their tiny dimensions.

I resent the price of handbags. And their fucking existence. After all if we had pockets we wouldn't need to bother.

Mostly, I resent the time I'm expected to waste doing things nobody expects from a man. They don't paint their faces. They don't bother coloring their hair. They never worry if their shoes match their bag, or if the shoe/bag combo matches their outfit.

So I guess I'm quite resentful, but I object to having my time wasted on trivial nonsense that men never have to think about.

And although I dont actually tend to waste my time that way, I am reclaiming my time. I'm angry about the expectation that I would even try to be a "proper girl".

I really felt everything you said.
