Egg and Chips

Our American friend won't believe egg and chips is a meal (egg, chips and beans, to be precise).

It got me wondering, is this a meal specific to my location (the north west of England), or is it enjoyed all over the U.K.?

Love it but never think to have it. Staple diet during student years

Acupofcamus · 25/05/2021 16:31

Love this meal, haven’t had it for years. I’m from Yorkshire and my Gran used to make it for me quite regularly. Salt on the egg too, so nice. Definitely a meal.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/05/2021 16:33

Salt and pepper on the egg is a must.

troppibambini6 · 25/05/2021 16:35

Love egg and chips, love egg chips and beans too especially with a white barm.
My absolute favourite it chops with a tin of beans on top a fuckton of vinegar and ketchup in. Food of the gods especially if you are hungover.

troppibambini6 · 25/05/2021 16:35

Is chips not chops!

fussychica · 25/05/2021 16:54

Ham, egg and chips for me with a nice dollop of tomato sauce. Definitely a meal.

CHISistoast · 25/05/2021 16:56

Indeed food of the gods. I've lived in NW and SE with mother from West Yorkshire.

KatherineJaneway · 25/05/2021 16:58

I haven't eaten it in years but did growing up in Wales. Would definitely have beans with it though, not just chips and egg.

2bazookas · 25/05/2021 17:10

@HeartShapedBalloon

Love egg and chips but would need sausages and beans as well to fill me up properly or I'd be starving an hour later!
but but but.. you could just have even more eggs and chips
AccidentallyOnPurpose · 25/05/2021 17:50

I'm from EE.

Eggs and chips (and garlic Grin) was my favourite meal growing up, mainly because I could do it myself.

It's still my go to "can't be arsed but I want something nice" meal.

OytheBumbler · 25/05/2021 18:23

I love it but rarely make it.

It's just not the same with frozen chips and I don't own a chip pan. Sad

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 25/05/2021 18:28

I have a vivid memory, would have been about 43 years ago when I was about 7, of having the most absolutely gorgeous egg and chips in a cafe in Folkestone. I was on a caravaning holiday with my grandparents. I love egg and chips but I don’t think I’ve had a plate since that measured up to that one! Grin

Any pan can be a chip pan if the oil is hot enough.Grin

@OytheBumbler

having particapted in this thread yesterday I found a lonely spud in my veg basket and made egg and very chunky chips

It was lovely - just not quite the same as if I’d cooked the chips in lard or dripping as my nan would have done

Still lovely though.

I do’t have a chip pan either. Have you seen the episode of the Royle Family where they come home early from the caravan because there is no TV and no chip pan ?

WingingItSince1973 · 25/05/2021 18:31

Northamptonshire here. My nans egg and chips were the best. Definitely home made chips. Would have beans with it too.

FictionalCharacter · 25/05/2021 18:32

Egg and chips- delish. Enjoyed all over the country. No beans required.

Bluntness100 · 25/05/2021 18:34

I’m Scottish and this was a thing, it’s something I’d only make though if we were hung over, starving and had absolutely fuck all else in to eat. I’d get a takeaway before I cooked it to be honest.

No beans though, cannot stand them.

MMM2 · 25/05/2021 18:35

Yorkshire , love egg and chips with white bread and butter to make a chip butty. Lovely Smile

MissMogwai · 25/05/2021 18:41

One of my favourite teas. North West here.

Has to be homemade chunky chips, not oven chips as they are a limp, burnt disgrace to the name of chips.

Also got to have thick white bread and butter and a mug of tea as standard.

sueelleker · 25/05/2021 18:42

I'd have ham with it as well, though.

sansucre · 25/05/2021 18:52

@Ted27

I think I must have egg and chips for tea now

I saw the original Shirely Valentine stage production - she cooked the chips and egg on stage, I was sat behind the cooker, Bliss

on a related matter - whilst up a mountain in Uganda on a hiking expedition, the cook served up chips. To the horror of a very posh consultant doctor a few of us proceeded to make chip butties. He thought they were urban myths, he was even more horrified that deep fried mars bars were also not an urban myth

I always think of Shirley Valentine when I see chips and egg as she's the only person I know who says it that way rather than egg and chips.

It is wonderful to know that she cooks this in the stage production!

Love egg and chips, no baked beans as I hate them, and the chips must be homemade. Shame I don't have a deep fat fryer otherwise I'd cook this for dinner.

MissMogwai · 25/05/2021 18:53

Forgot to say no beans, unless there is sausage to create a bean dam.

OytheBumbler · 25/05/2021 18:54

Those who make it regularly with proper chips, do you use half a pan of sunflower oil each time?

Always seems so excessive and I don't deep fry anything else. I presume my mum kept a pan of oil on the stove because we had chips with everything back in the day. Smile

MrsDThomas · 25/05/2021 19:02

Always crisp and dry for chips, never oil. I have frozen in the freezer for the kids to use but I always make my own.

Ted27 · 25/05/2021 19:52

'Proper' chips would be with lard or dripping when I was growing up

I don't often do proper chips, if I do its usually sunflower oil, but on special occasions I buy lard Grin
