Egg and Chips

Our American friend won't believe egg and chips is a meal (egg, chips and beans, to be precise).

It got me wondering, is this a meal specific to my location (the north west of England), or is it enjoyed all over the U.K.?

I’ve just started making twice cooked proper chips, I use sunflower oil

QuestionableMouse · 25/05/2021 21:22

@MrsDThomas

Always crisp and dry for chips, never oil. I have frozen in the freezer for the kids to use but I always make my own.
Crisp and Dry is rapeseed oil. @MrsDThomas

One of my favourites and so Shirley Valentine!

TaylorStan · 25/05/2021 21:33

Welsh girl here. Definitely a meal. Add 2 slices of bread and butter to make a great butty on the side. Now I'm hungry

Pagwatch · 25/05/2021 21:51

My mum reused the oil. No one used fresh oil every time

ViciousJackdaw · 25/05/2021 22:08

It was lard round my way, the chip pan would be left as it was to solidify and was then re-melted the next time yer mam did chips. Looking back, that's bloody disgusting but my god, it was fantastic.

Ham egg and chips is amazing

Beans as well aren't really necessary IMO

AdoraBell · 25/05/2021 22:11

Yes in London, Kent, Essex and Somerset. Those are the places I’ve lived in the UK, grown up in London east end.

MrsDThomas · 25/05/2021 22:17

@QuestionableMouse i do know that. But its much better to use the solid type. Easier to clean etc. Oil goes everywhere when sloppy.

Until 3 yrs ago i used lard. Hence why I changed to the solid crisp and dry.

shineaway · 25/05/2021 22:19

Egg and chips was a favourite childhood meal (New Zealand) - occasionally with beans or ham.

SleepingStandingUp · 25/05/2021 22:21

Oh man I really want home made chips and egg now with bread and butter. West Midlands

KatherineJaneway · 25/05/2021 22:27

As a kid the chip pan was full of lard and solidified after being used then was melted again for next use.

The egg you helped enrich the sauce from the beans.

Serpenta · 25/05/2021 22:37

This is why I wouldn't trust myself with a deep fat fryer at home. I'd end up adding a garnish of triple cooked beef dripping chips to every meal.

MadisonAvenue · 25/05/2021 23:00

Haven’t had egg and chips for years but think it’ll be on the menu very soon. It used to be Friday night dinner when I was growing up. No beans though, the bean juice contaminates everything else on the plate.

There has to be a mug of tea with chips. I don’t drink it normally, just with chips.

MadisonAvenue · 25/05/2021 23:03

Posted too soon, I have a cousin who started several late night house fires after coming home drunk and deciding to cook egg and chips.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 25/05/2021 23:05

Yep it is ham egg and chips here.

Southeast.

Best comfort food ever.

funnyoldonion · 25/05/2021 23:08

North Wales, had this regularly as a kid, mainly due to skint parents but I bloody love it anyway!

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/05/2021 23:10

Oh man I miss the childhood chip pan.
Stored under the kitchen sink cupboard with fat that solidified.
The chips were amazing.
I wouldn't dare have one, they are so dangerous, but all so normal back then.

Davros · 25/05/2021 23:20

You can get a chip basket to go in an ordinary saucepan, I've got one. Go on, you know you want one

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/05/2021 23:32

I actually had a deep fat fryer for a while, but cleaning them is so so awful I got rid of it.
The chips were great, but pale into significance when fried chicken in mentioned.
Omg, yes.

Amdone123 · 25/05/2021 23:47

I love egg and chips, but agree it never tastes the same as yer mum made, but what does.
Wetherspoons do a great ham, egg n chips. Cheap as chips too. ( Pun intended).

magicstar1 · 26/05/2021 02:38

@IHaveBrilloHair we got rid of ours for the same reason...then my parents bought us a new one. It’s amazing, does perfect chips in minutes and is the easiest thing to clean.

Hm2020 · 26/05/2021 02:42

My extremely picky ds will eat it which is rare for him I used to order egg, chips and a frankfurter from the cafe years ago!

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/05/2021 03:58

@Magicstar1
I had one like that, still awful to clean.
I've looked at the air fryers but I don't think you can put wet food in them so they just aren't for me.

Meggymoo777 · 26/05/2021 04:17

Ooohhh... worst thread ever! Just want fried egg and chips now with plenty of ground black pepper! 😋(to be fair, while I love beans... I'd do without the beans with egg and chips)

Egg and chips IS the ultimate meal! (When I ate meat it was steak, egg and chips! Equally amazing!)
