Is anyone a regular LBC listener?

I’ve only recently found it, and have heard lunchtime and early evening shows until now.

Just tuned in this morning and listening to someone referring to himself as “Steve Steve Steve”, and it is very Alan Partridge-esque.

It was real stream of consciousness stuff, running from the empty beaches of Barra and the soup you will need in your campervan to day trips around Twickenham, murders in Gloucestershire and litter-throwing, with little tonal range along the way.

I found it bizarre, but maybe this was an off morning?

There's a guide here - is your radio DAB?

I was until their recent behaviour, especially Shelagh Fogarty and her abhorrent remark about poisoning the coffee of people who chose not to have the covid vaccine.

MarshaBradyo · 19/05/2021 09:42

I used to about it but now I switch between LBC, R4 and R6 (switch from drama or DJs talking too much on R6)

LBC can be good for people with l expertise phoning in. They are much better at not interrupting and giving people time to speak.

I have to avoid the adverts though

MarshaBradyo · 19/05/2021 09:42

I used to avoid it rather

SteveArnottsCodeine · 19/05/2021 09:45

@Leonardsgirl

And I love the fact that Eddie Mair has the 'Steve Allen sound bite of the day' during his show every day.
Came to say this. I always laugh.
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/05/2021 09:46

@ImAncient

I know Nick Ferrari is Brexiteer but I don’t find he’s as condescending to remainers as James to Brexiteers. And I’m a remainer. I like all the others mentioned but also Maajid Nawaz is great too.
Thank you was just going to echo this - James OB on trans rights is something else too

LBC is brilliant, even if certain presenters get my back up the core group are incredibly articulate and thought provoking :
Nick
James
Sheila
Eddie
Ian
Steve
And Majid

EdgeOfACoin · 19/05/2021 09:59

I like Maajid Nawaz.

James O'Brien is awful. Convinced he's right - doesn't know half as much as he thinks he does (and I say that as a remainer).

ImAncient · 19/05/2021 11:09

OnlyFoolsnMothers oh gosh he’s unbelievable on Transrights. Convinced he’s completely right 😬

C130 · 19/05/2021 11:30

I like James O'Brien, David Lammy, and Maajid Nawaz.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 19/05/2021 11:54

Can’t take Lammy. But then they also had Hopkins and Farage didn’t they, so you can’t like them all!

GroggyLegs · 19/05/2021 12:57

@ImAncient - what is his view? I've seen him flip flop on this - first he was TWAW, then he stated he was 'starting to get it', then last I heard he was refusing to take calls on it (in the context of free speech in universities, which seemed... Odd).

Sometimes I agree strongly with him, sometimes I find him unbearable.

ImAncient · 19/05/2021 13:02

Last time I listened he was for trans completely & wouldn’t listen about the erosion of women’s rights. I’ve switched him off now apart from mystery hour as I just find him so condescending.

Jjjayfee · 19/05/2021 13:12

James O'Brien s very dismissive of any view other than his own and you get very little balanced argument. Mostly I have to turn over from him to radio 4 and the excellent Robert Elms (all about London ) though

Milomonster · 19/05/2021 13:14

Long time listener as I be followed Nick Abbott across different radio stations since being a teen. My DS is now a devoted listener. He’s incredibly funny, intelligent and articulate. Have a listen! We love David Lammy also.

TinyGlassOwl · 19/05/2021 14:15

I loathe Steve Allen, he's a snide little misogynist imo. Although I do accept that he technically has broadcasting 'talent' in his ability to talk non-stop for 3 hours.

James O'B can be great, can be a twat. Same for Maajid Nawaz. And Ferrari (although he errs more often on the side of twat).

I like Shelagh Fogarty, Matt Frei and James Swarbrick - all of them manage not to let their egos overwhelm their programmes.

Eddie Mair is a GOD and I could happily listen to him 24 hours a day.

HappydaysArehere · 19/05/2021 14:33

James O’Brian is my favourite. He talks such a lot of common sense and has a nice manner.

Devonchills · 19/05/2021 15:01

I love Sheila and Majid. But I have to turn James OB off sometimes. He's so patronising and condescending to listeners who call up and have a different view than his. He can be quite cruel and has a bit of a mean streak.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/05/2021 15:47

@HappydaysArehere

James O’Brian is my favourite. He talks such a lot of common sense and has a nice manner.
Nice manner to any view that echos his. For such an intelligent man he’s blinded by the trans brigade- one particular phone in stays in my mind when he tore a woman to shreds when she explained what being a woman is and was practically licking up the trans woman who called in, didn’t bother to challenge any of “her” ideals. If you know James it’s quite ironic when his whole Brexit stance is that feelings trumped facts in the vote.

As a Londoner i have been listening to LBC for over 47 yrs. As a child ( mum always had it on ) and independently on my own , on my then new "Hi Fi with cassette player " , since the 80's.

It has changed a lot. It even went off air for a while in the early 90's. My beloved Clive Bull's show was taken by Dave Luddy, i still listened. Babs from Bermondsey was in the studio with Clive on his last show. I remember it like it was last night. God rest her. Dave Luddy not a bad show to be fair. I also missed Robbie Vincent at 1am weekdays. The station has changed greatly.

Steve Allen is a great broadcaster but somehow over the yrs he has become less funny and more uncomfortable. I remember approx 15 yrs ago he was talking about waking up and steaming his bed flat sheet before he did anything else and his membership of HRP ( which i then bought) . He was funny and informative and camp and safe.

Now, he is more vitriolic. He has been referring this week to a young gay Towie character ( 18/19 yrs old ) who is leaving Towie to go to uni. He has been unpleasant to this boy. I have a 20 yr old son and i would hate for my child to be spoken about in this way, while he was finding himself. He is awful to many now and often has his facts wrong. It is not happy listening anymore. I am turning off now.

Peter Cook used to call LBC as a Russian character. Micheal Van Straten was the doc/herbal extract guy and Martin Fido used to give us murder every Friday Midnight. We used to listen to Hugh F W build a new life in the country. LBC so different now.

Too many adds! Every 15 mins something or other! Breaks the flow. Ian Payne is my fav now. His "rambly" shows are great. All fizzy fish and Netflix. He is very funny and entertaining. Clive shoved to grave yard at weekends.

Too political now all presenters...and if if i hear the over entitled JOB remind me one more time , he is a "middle class, privately educated white boy" . He says it daily. Who cares. He clearly needs us to know that. So insecure.

Being middle class and privately educated is something i keep hidden for fear of coming across as a dick. People know i am white as i am blonde. End of!

Thank god for Jeremy Vine in the same slot. At least Jeremy has the lovely Welsh allotment guy to help me with my veg. I have learnt from Jeremy's light show and there is humour there. LBC has morphed into something unrecognisable from when it was founded. Sean Connery Eddie Mair, good lord . Cringe, slimy, creepy. How i imagine Dracula to sound.

I do like Maajid but he can be a bit shouty and intense at times. I do not need that on a Sat or Sun while i am batch cooking and house cleaning , so , Rylan and Elaine P for me.

LysistrataVickers · 19/05/2021 19:09

JOB completely turned me off LBC. Much prefer talk radio.

girl71 · 19/05/2021 19:32

@LysistrataVickers i have started cheating on LBC with Times Radio. I cannot stand JOB and not keen on R2 Ken Bruce. I had no where else to turn! I even downloaded James Whale the other day on Talk catch up. I am quite frankly lost and reckless!

Bookridden · 19/05/2021 19:46

Where is the love for Tom Swarbrick in this thread?! Moderate and kind and intelligent. Think he's going to be on primetime soon.

Leonardsgirl · 19/05/2021 20:06

I love Tom Swarbrick. He's definitely a prime presenter in the making.

I'm now keen to try Times Radio.

I like the LBC weekday presenters but I struggle at weekends. I can't bear Andrew Castle, David Lammy or Majit Nawaaz (apologies for spelling if wrong).
