'One project a day' thread

BlueLobelia · 18/04/2021 12:51

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

@Hollyhocksarenotmessy Thank you. Reading this has been encouraging. I'm planning on spending fifteen minutes on, fifteen minutes off on the textile mountain. Physical and mental health both a little shaky, so working out best way to keep going. But I'm back from the school run now and can get on with stuff.

Mumsnet is pretty awesome.

RunningKatie · 21/04/2021 09:04

Today I'm going to take down the supposedly flush to the ceiling lights in the bathroom, hall and downstairs loo to give them all a good clean and remove all the dead insects!
It's a job I only do once a year but gives a good sense of satisfaction.
And I'm going to tackle the ironing in front of the tv tonight.

Breathmiller · 21/04/2021 09:08

Today is emptying and sorting out an under eaves storage in my attic. I have dismantled a wall unit in my living room that I would like to keep for a future project so I need to find space for it.
And clear out my work space in the attic to start working with a clear space. I have really embraced the clear space/clear mind attitude lately. Just got to actually make it happen.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 21/04/2021 09:19

Ooh, can I join please?
Love this idea!

Today's project is to sew my daughter's Brownie badges onto her uniform.
This has been on my list of things to do for a good few weeks now. I've been able to put it off because they've not been meeting face to face - but that changes as of tonight!

ButterflyOfFreedom · 21/04/2021 09:21

Oh, and Sunday's task was to sow some grass seeds.
Monday's task was selling an item I've been meaning to get rid of for ages.
Both successes so a good start! :)

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 21/04/2021 09:33

2 things done today.

Emptied the kitchen bottom cupboard by the back door, and found new homes for the flower vases, flour, catering bag of t-bags, jar of porridge oats. Empty glass jars DP hoards went into the recycling bin. Lined the shelves with newspaper and it's now a boot cupboard, instead of having them stacked up in the hall and by the back door getting in the way and dropping dried mud everywhere.

Also life admin job - phoned 2 window cleaners for quotes for regular visits, they haven't been cleaned since we moved here in August!

Feels great to tick things off my mental list.

Gottashiftit · 21/04/2021 09:34

I've completed my task already today by phoning and arranging a carpet cleaner.

Why do I put these jobs off, they only take seconds.

I'm going to add an afternoon challenge of arranging someone to come and restuff our living room sofa cushions.

@rosegoldwatcher

This morning I used the marvelous foaming silver cleaner to de-tarnish four items. Didn't take much more than an hour.

Then I started to construct a seat cover for my snuggle chair. I did two of the same, a couple of weeks ago, for the big sofa and had been putting off the third because if I cut it wrongly I have no more fabric!

I got to the stage where the bastard zip was in and was two seams away from finishing. Then the thread ran out. Angry

Not even Amazon Prime can get another reel to me until Thursday!

What do you use @rosegoldwatcher I have a silver necklace that has tarnished I would love to save.

2020nymph · 21/04/2021 09:58

@fairydustandpixies

Can I hop on? I today finally opened a parcel that arrived Monday last week. My excuse is my best friend/ddog had to be pts on Tuesday and I didn't want to move on from his nose being the last to sniff it - I don't sniff parcels btw!
So sorry to hear about your dog @fairydustandpixies

Ooo I love this idea. Do we think up the projects or are they specific (like apartment therapies January thing?)

SydneyCarton · 21/04/2021 10:08

Yesterday's project was to clean and sort out the kitchen windowsill, which had got grubby with bits of leaves and gunk from the three houseplants sitting on it. Took about ten minutes and now it looks so much better.

Today will either be sorting out the drawer of random kitchen bits like cookie cutters, ice lolly moulds, birthday cake candles etc, or sorting out a couple of my daughters' drawers in their bedroom (they came up with a plan to swap chests of drawers but lost interest after moving half the clothes over, so I have no idea whose stuff is in which bit Angry - the 5 year old nearly went to school in giant age 7 PE shorts this morning Grin)

rosegoldwatcher · 21/04/2021 10:33

@2020nymph - It is Goddards Silver Polish Foam. A pot of brick coloured paste and a sponge. Wet the sponge and dab it on the paste. As you rub your silver item with the sponge the 'foam' is able to get into crevices...

You would probably have better results, though, with a silver dip for your necklace.

My job for today is work related. I’m going to tidy out my inbox. I try to keep no more than 25 emails in there and filter as much off as possible into other folders but I have slacked and have over 400 in there! It makes me antsy to see them there.

Squirrel26 · 21/04/2021 11:43

I tried to put up my new blind yesterday, but I got confused (despite repeated YouTube video watching) and put the brackets on upside down! Try again tonight...

Breathmiller · 21/04/2021 11:43

I have cleared out the shoes and cleaned under my stairs. Big messy job but I'm glad it's done now.
Also, done a normal washing, the shower curtains and my son's coat.
This thread is great for motivation.

Catname · 21/04/2021 13:17

This morning, I washed 14 windows and 2 patio doors. At a future date, I shall clean the insides too.

Catname · 21/04/2021 13:18

I’ve also washed 3 sofa cushion covers and got them outside to dry.

Divineswirls · 21/04/2021 13:33

My garden swing seat has arrived so that'll be today's project to put together

Welcome!

The projects are anything you wish to do. :)

My day went a bit haywire with an issue with DS's school and bullying. It's taken up alot of time so my project is going to be teeny tiny today and I will just clean the glass in the front door and in the downstairs toilet.

I don't have the energy for anything else wight now.

Oh- and I am making a roast chicken dinner for DS1 who is in the middle of bullying hell. It's his favourite.

My plan today was to clean out the huge drawer all the candle and candleholders are in, which is too heavy to open easily, and put them in the sideboard, which will be much easier to use. But while we were out (getting vaccinated Grin), the postman arrived with four wild garlic plants which were in a sorry state from being posted, so I had to clear a patch in the hedgerow up behind the shed and plant them. Then I was in gardening mode, so I potted on a load of pumpkins and geraniums that were ready to come out of the propagator, and switched around the seedlings in the playroom (they're rotated through a big bottom watering tray every couple of days). And repotted a string of pearls plant that just hasn't done anything in the three years since I got it. And cleaned out the hay in the box that the hen and chicks are living in in the sitting room Gin

The house is still a tip but the plants and chicks are okay. We could really do with an eyeroll smiley here.

As soon as I finish lazing on the couch and MNing, I'm going to go and do the candles. Our new patio table and chairs are arriving tomorrow so I want to dig out my little miniature lantern candleholders to put on it.

Tomorrow's project will be to sit on my arse and thoroughly test the new patio furniture clear out the kids' colouring and stationary drawer and the tablecloths drawer, which has a load of other ransom stuff that got shoved in when we moved in here, 9 months ago. Then hopefully that will clear space for DH's Big IT Box Of Doom, which hasn't been unpacked yet. Again, I need a BIG eyeroll smiley. Then I can steal the box to use on the no-dig salad bed I'm constructing in the shady patch beside the patio.

RunningKatie · 21/04/2021 13:51

1 lampshade cleaned. Was trickier than I thought - and I've screwed it back up but am waiting for the sound of tinkling glass to indicate I didn't do it right! Grin
2 more to do, will be after school now, I ran out of time over lunch as the dog wanted to be fussed.

Divineswirls · 21/04/2021 13:58

Have to take DS to the dentist later so will leave swing seat till tomorrow as don't want to finish it off outside in the dark if it all goes Pete Tong

LlamaGiles · 21/04/2021 14:02

Good afternoon, productive day for me today, planted out a couple of pot plants in the garden plus some pruning and watering. This method is working really well for me, I realise now in hindsight that I was getting so overwhelmed with everything needing doing that I'd got stuck, so thanks again @BlueLobelia

Sparklynewname · 21/04/2021 14:08

DH repaired our downstairs loo last night.
Tonight I hope to finish cleaning the oven but I think it might take a little longer than one evening!
