'One project a day' thread

... many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :)

A poorly toddler derailed our plans today.

I've ordered a huge basket for all DS1's cuddly toys. Repaired my coat and fixed the paint on one of the flower pots.

And, after three loads of washing, I saw the bottom of my laundry basket!

TenCornMaidens · 07/05/2021 21:45

Have culled part of my wardrobe tonight. Pile for the chazzer next week.

drspouse · 07/05/2021 21:51

I reckon the charity shops will be overrun now everyone is allowed to go.

DownUdderer · 08/05/2021 03:51

I bought a new rug and had to clean and tidy before I could put it where I wanted it to go.

mathanxiety · 08/05/2021 05:33

Neighbour was using the washing machine so I left my basket and went back upstairs. Tackled a closet - many old JA paperbacks of the DCs removed, some for the charity shop (two bags and one box), some in poor shape so will be recycled, and some very well-loved books placed on bookshelves inside the closet (I was given some short bookshelves by a neighbour who was moving and I'm glad to have found a place for one of them). Realised too late that my basket of laundry was still waiting to be washed. Mañana...

@drspouse my dd went to have a look in our local ones and came away with a couple of really nice new branded pieces of clothing. They probably are getting a lot of tat too but at least one of ours does textile recycling. I've drastically reduced what even comes into my house, so there's very little to declutter. It would still breed in odd corners if I didn't keep an eye on it though!

Today I've gone through my food cupboards and hauled out things that seem to get pushed to the back. The plan is to menu plan carefully over next couple of weeks and save waste/money. Our food bank has very little space at present apparently, so they are being specific about what they do and don't need.

TenCornMaidens · 08/05/2021 12:06

Planning on doing some ironing, mending and alterations today. I have had a few items to mend for literally about six months so will be good to get them off my stupid list.

Also saw on another thread that OBVIOUSLY you can use wundaweb to shorten the hems on tops that are a bit long, so I have dug through my closet this morning and found four tops that I'd prefer to be an inch or so shorter.

None of these jobs are household jobs. I seem to be focusing on my own wardrobe. But that counts, right?

Divineswirls · 08/05/2021 12:32

I've been surface cleaning and tidying and prepping food for friends who'll be huddled in the garden later. Now going have a shower.

It quite the trend round our way for teens to buy secondhand clothes and shoes like converse that can popped in the wash. Depop is popular as are shops

Givemecoffeeplease · 08/05/2021 15:13

I’ve put away laundry, tidied bedroom - including a big clear out of crap old handbags - and kitchen and now I’m having a sit down with the dog. Still haven’t done the eBaying I said I’d do in a previous thread. But baby steps.

RunningKatie · 08/05/2021 15:32

I've started to list things for sale, although it seems sometimes like such a faff for little return. We need to do a serious declutter before building work starts, and our house is full of toys the dc don't play with etc.
I've not had the best week at work so feel I've lost a bit of focus but today I've also sorted some paperwork so not feeling a total lost cause!

mamakoukla · 08/05/2021 15:58

More laundry on the go! Stock pot is merrily bubbling away, made a spicy marinade for turkey strios which will be bbqed then frozen for later use. Picking up a present for DC’s friend shortly. Will retidy the utility room and am soaking some seeds to plant tomorrow.

Devlesko · 08/05/2021 16:25

I have washed up, quick trip to town for a few essentials.
Starting tea, and hopefully manage something else from my ever increasing list, before bedtime.
I'm struggling to function atm, so every little thing is a step, I suppose.

LlamaGiles · 08/05/2021 18:18

Packaged up some eBay sales to post today only to find the post office closed when I arrived, but at least they're ready for Monday. Trip to Boots for some essentials too.

ShinyHatStand · 08/05/2021 18:53

Good day today.
Sorted out ALL the storage in the hall. Coats, shoes, bags, junk.
Given away stuff on Facebook. Binned a large bin bag full.
Smaller bag destined for the charity shop.

2020nymph · 08/05/2021 20:16

Today has been a good day. Blitzed the house this morning as a family and long walk this afternoon.

DS1's toy storage box has arrived and been filled. Bought house plants, some as replacements and some for the pots we decorated. Ironed the new curtains.

Chunkymonkey123 · 08/05/2021 22:21

This morning I was up early with the boys and instead of going on my phone I finished cleaning the oven then I cleaned the grill and the fridge!
Still not made any progress on my photo book which has been on the list for 3 days.

All bed sheets in the house have been washed today and I tidied all of upstairs so that I could do a proper hoover under the beds etc.
Tomorrow I need to plant out my seedlings so that I can get my vegetable seeds out to the mini greenhouse for hardening off. I also need to finish weeding the front drive.

Got rid of half a bottle of Worcestershire sauce with a best before date of October 2014 Blush
Also some stir fry sauce of about the same vintage.

Flowers to Devlesko

DownUdderer · 09/05/2021 03:45

I tackled my hallway dumping ground today, I have made progress and along the way whilst organizing the 'junk' I have tidied lots of other areas as well. Sort of cumulative tidying, one things spurs me on to just do another. I'm getting to a good tipping point where more areas are looking good than bad. My trouble in the past has been that I can't see the wood for the tree's. Being more focused is helping me!

BlueLobelia · 09/05/2021 08:11

Morning!

It is a garden project day today.

More compost to be bought. Netting for my strawberries. Plant up some swiss chard. I need to buy cucumber and courgette plugs because my seedlings failed to take.

I also need to relocate 10 of our pond fish to my neighbour's as a swap for 10 of his because our fish need some new blood.

I did loads of tidying yesterday, in fact, though the DCs dropped their tea on the clean dining room floor within an hour. How dare they.

I've put leftover food in plastic containers to freeze as complete meals.

I want to hoover the stairs and landing and mop the kitchen floor, both look clean but feel I should.

I also want to attempt to photograph items to put on Ebay and try out Depop. I might research prices before I do that actually.

Fnib · 09/05/2021 14:31

I gave kitchen floor a good mopping earlier. Sorted another larder shelf. This thread is really keeping me on track for little 'extra' jobs.
I washed cats beds too.

ShinyHatStand · 09/05/2021 14:44

I WILL go and paint the shed. Soon. Really really soon...
